So sub 1080p Xbox One and a lack of anisotropic filtering on PS4 (what is up with that? bandwidth issues?)

CPU limiting but performance is more consistent on the PS4. Seems opposite of what Unity ( another CPU limiting title ) showed.

"We'll have a lot more to say about Dying Light in the coming days but it's safe to say that, at this point, the game runs consistently on PlayStation 4 with the Xbox One version lagging behind in certain areas, while image quality is close overall. We'll also be taking a look at the PC version of the game, which offers us the ability to scale well beyond the engine's console implementation. First impressions suggest a demanding title that seems to be CPU-limited, making it rather difficult to hit 60fps without dropping the distance slider down a great deal, but we'll have the full story later this week."

As usual, the DF article sounds worse than it actually is. I haven't had any frame issues on X1. It feels very smooth and stable to me.

If you watch the video of the fps comparison, they literally show the absolute worse fps disparity they can find in the first 10% of the video, then the rest of the video is nearly identical. lol. If I hadn't watched the whole thing I would have believed it was a big difference.

Dying Light has some impressive day/night cycles. I just wish the game had higher res textures and better optimization with multithreading. Other than that, yea, I'd qualify it as current gen tech game with impressive gameplay.

PS4 definitely has the performance on lock with this one. The only thing worth mentioning is that AF... whats the deal? It's not the first time a game has released with zero AF on PS4, I can enable that on my PC with almost no impact on framerate.

I think the performance faltered on the PS4 due to its CPU bottleneck.

I'm wondering if the AF issue is down to memory contention from CPU and GPU.

I'm not sure why some devs have an issue with implementing 16x AF. Other PS4 exclusives and multiplatform titles have it on. Alien Isolation, for example, on the PS4 has 16x AF yet holds better performance and less screen tearing than the X1 too.

"Cort stated that there are no hardware issues restricting 16 X AF that he is aware of. “No hardware/SDK issues that I’m aware of. Sounds like a question for the developer.”

edit: not sure if this is worth a damn but nonetheless...

"I asked a dev of Dying Light about AF on PS4. It's there but ranges are set differently than on X1 for some reason he doesn't know. They may issue a fix because of that. He added that PS4 supports AF without any problems.

Don't consider this as any official statement from Techland, it was a friendly exchange on FB."

What does AF do?

Anisotropic filtering filters the textures in a way that is non-uniform. So consider a rectangle and then consider an ellipse. Imagine now putting a rectangle over an image. You'd only be able to grab an area of the image in a uniform way (i.e. a certain number of steps to the left/right and that same number top/bottom). But with an ellipse where you can control how "long" and "wide" it's shape is, you can get much more coverage. This allows much better filtering on textures when the camera is at very sharp angles.

LOL @ the NeoGAF face-off of PC vs. PS4!!

Those guys are arguing like crazy! Again the X1 guys are nice, humble and peaceful..

I watched uncompressed footage of both the PS4 and the PC from gamersyde...I barely noticed a difference except for the 60fps. The game moved so fast it was hard to notice the lack of AF in the PS4 version.

X1 guys are quiet because over there crazy talk isn't allowed.

I am saying its not much because it isn't.

But I just showed you where it is on a closer inspection. Even in the screens you showed, there are definitely some missing objects/FX (i.e. that campfire is missing). On the broader scale, I agree.. the overall image looks similar.

Looking at most screens and watching gameplay footage of both barely shows a difference.
I don't need to take a closer inspection of the game.

Some of the comparison gifs have whole chunks of geometry missing. Air units, those blue trash bags, the radio tower is scaled down in terms of geometry.

Not a big deal. But theres definitely a difference.

& lower LODs for PS4 on things like trees.

PC patch is coming.

Hi guys,

We've been getting a MASSIVE amount of feedback from you all - good work everyone.
We've listened to the good (thanks!) and the bad (thank you as well - we need to hear those things). So, with your feedback, we will be issuing a Patch.

Here's what we will be fixing:

- CPU Optimization

- Save game issues

- and more.

We will keep you updated on the progress.

Also about 7 missing windows from the buildings and lack of shadow detail. not a huge deal but yes the way he did a comparison you can definitely see the difference. I would have never noticed any of that unless until it was presented this way. And that's with PC settings on low. but to compare apples to apples how would a $400 PC compare to the ps4 for a face off?

Well, in a couple of years, you will be able to get a $400 PC that will destroy the same old (then) PS4.
