Its possible Microsoft hurt the industry by OG Xbox/ 360 pioneering the online market place.

Its also just as likely that it helped it. Either way its the market now. Even got Nintendo making Games as a service.

They standardised voice chat, achievements, the wireless controller, the hard drive, DLC, ethernet ports...entire genres of games would not exist without an online infrastructure.

PUBG would not exist in Nintendo or Sonys world.

Id say for good or bad Microsoft has been the most influential console maker in the last 15 years. In the least the digital marketplace will endure longer than waggle and the Cell processor.

I said it wouldnt exist in Sony or Nintendos world. Neither of them have any interest in pursuing highly social emergant games. At least not any more.

On a semi related note of voice chat, does the Xbox One X include a headset? Mines still in the box, probably won’t open it till I finish BoTW, and the few unboxing vids I’ve seen o can’t recall them makin note of the headset.

Will MS atempt to impact console bundles by excluding the headset in the next generation Xbox? They did try to with this gen but prior to release of it but fan uproar said “we want one even though we don’t use them”

No headset included. It was nice to have spares because they break so easily but at least now the controller will work with my headphones with the mic cable and that one is much tougher.

Yeah, it can't be denied that MS had a strong influence on the console market, if not the strongest. Gaming in general hasn't quite been the same once the 360/PS3 came out, and large part of that success/trend was the original xbox live.
 
I was just browsing Reserera and it seems like they're banning people left and right over there for the stupidest things. I guess that's what happens when you put the same self hating sexually confused mods in place that were at Neogaf.
It's all the same, just a different address.

LOL.

A few weeks ago, GAF's owner put out a new "Here's our new Mods" thread. I thought they already had new mods, but I guess this is another new batch of them.

Each new mod seemed to post to get the word out like it was a big dog and pony show.

GAF's site traffic has dropped like a rock, while Resetera has blew past them both global and USA rankings.

I disagree, actually. I think the moderation over there is much better than it was at GAF. They explain the reasons for warnings and bans. Warnings and bans are posted publically. There is a lot more transparency. At GAF, no one would know what had happened or why, because it was all behind the scenes. They can be a little hardline sometimes, but I think they are trying to set a new tone and new boundaries, and that's what happens. I think they're doing a good job.

It's not the same mods as at GAF. I believe only 1 of them is the same. The rest all are new. I've seen a number of mods have very respectful discussions with members, and I haven't seen any of the arbitrariness or egotism there was at GAF. Every warning/ban I've seen has been given a sensible explanation.

Discussions are a lot better than they used to be at GAF. You don't have to page through all the one-liner drive-bys. The level of sh*tposting and trolling is way down. I admire how they've turned things around.
 
I should mention, I only visit the Game forum, so that's where my opinion is coming from. I never go to the Off Topic forum (EtcetEra). I'm sure that is filled with all kinds of political correctness and hypersensitivity.

The modding in the gaming section might be better, and be new, but the posters are the same.
 
Granted I've only been casually lurking over there but I find the place to be ok. Of course I think I've only posted once or twice and don't really dig deep in there. I also just skip over any kind of console war threads so that helps a ton. I spend most of my time in the game specific threads too.

Anytime you have a large group you get some eye roll worthy moments too. Just to be expected these days unfortunately.

Plus I think it is just a symptom of modern gaming culture today - people just take this crap too seriously. People seem to flock to the drama like moths to a flame.

That's an iOS exploit by ads from AdSense. It happens here from time to time. Apple knows about it, but refuse to do anything about it. Since I'm on all day, when an ad causes it, I usually report it to AdSense so they can remove it and ban the account.
 
I checked. They're still chugging along. Still a decent level of activity, but of course much reduced from before. Similar thread topics as on Resetera, but with much less traffic. Looks like they updated their format a little. I don't see any of the previous drama evidenced in thread titles, so maybe they've settled into a new rhythm.

Honestly I only lurk there and that works great. I stick mostly to the game specific OT threats and avoid all the drama. For that, the place is solid.

I think like 90% of the video game world, there's way too much drama. I've got a job I spend 10+ hours a day and a wife... the last thing I want is more drama. I want to fire up video games and shoot some pixels on a screen, not get called stupid because I happen to game on one platform a little more than another. :wink:

Stay away from off topic. I saw a thread on there about an old Jimmy Kimmel sketch where he was dressed up as Karl Malone and a number of people said they didn't think it was blackface and they were just straight up banned. Ridiculous.

Good place for video game news only
 
I enjoy Resetera. I think it's much improved over GAF. It's much better run and has more quality posters. I don't go to the Off Topic forum, just the Video Game section. I think it's fine there, well-moderated, with lots of interesting discussions and news. Naturally, it's got the things that go along with any large forum (knee-jerk reactions, stupidity, noise, etc.), but it's my go-to for in-depth discussion about games, news, etc.
 
I haven't had an issues in the game form at Resetera. I enjoy it and post on a rare occasion. I am done at Gaf though.
