No Games? Xbox One is on track to have more Exclusives than the 360
June 26th, 2017

As E3 comes and goes for yet another year, Xbox and Phil Spencer have certainly been centre stage for many. Since it was revealed in the 2016 briefing that we would be expecting a new console (codenamed Scorpio), which has recently been showcased as the Xbox One X, fans have been even more demanding this year for Xbox to deliver.

There is no doubt that Phil and the team of technical wizards have delivered on one promise…..to create the most powerful games console on the market today. The Xbox One X is a beast of a machine. Now before all the PC big riggers jump on that statement, I know it’s still nowhere near the specs you can get in PC gaming, but we are not talking about a PC, we are talking about a console. We have already seen a shift towards mid gen upgrades with the introduction of the PS4 Pro, which vastly built on the power of the base PS4. It seems many were disparaging of the Xbox One because of its apparent lack of grunt under the hood, so surely now Xbox have addressed that issue gamers will be rejoicing and returning to the platform in droves? Right? Well not exactly. It seems now the focus has shifted from how many P’s a console can kick out to what should have mattered in the first place…GAMES.

So what are gamers complaining about now? Well the apparent lack of new IPs and exclusive content on the Xbox is now the major head scratcher for Phil and good old Major Nelson. After the E3 conference finished I took to Twitter to see the response amongst the hundreds of gamers and communities I follow, only to find many seemed to be feeling pretty disappointed, dispondent..underwhelmed. The surprise I felt at this was somewhat shocking, as I actually came away with a feeling of excitement. Phil and the team had built the machine we were promised, for a price many level-headed gamers were expecting. So what was the issue? Well many were expecting much more from the Xbox in terms of Exclusive games, DLC/marketing deals or perhaps even an old classic revived.

Looking at the stats Microsoft showed nearly four times as many games at this years E3 than it did compared to last. Sea of Thieves and Crackdown 3 we had seen before, added to that finally a release for Cuphead, State of decay 2, Forza 7 and Battlegrounds formed a decent foundation to the conference. The multiplats looked gorgeous on the new hardware such as Assassins Creed Origins, Metro and the brilliant looking new IP from EA called Anthem. Black Desert, Dark Rock Galaxy, new Ori, Tacoma, CodeVein, Ashen, The Darwin Project…the list goes on and on. Although they are not all Exclusives its clear the platform has plenty to go at in the future, not to mention what you can play from the past in the form of 360 and original Xbox backwards compatibility. All in all Microsoft announced 42 games for the Xbox One X, including 22 games with console exclusivity. Is this a lack of games? Did the 360 have the same issue? It would seem not.

Throughout the last generation of consoles the Xbox 360 was a major player. It was an early leader despite its red ring of death issue. Due to the difficulty of developing for the PlayStation 3 Cell technology, added to the ease of making games on the 360, the Xbox platform managed to take quite the slice out of the console user base. It is still regarded as one of the best overall consoles ever created. But did it have the same issue we are seeing now with an apparent lack of exclusive games turning consumers off the Xbox One? I have to be honest I never felt like it lacked. Until I joined Twitter five or so years ago, I had no idea the concept of ‘console wars’ existed and that these kind of conversations consumed many a keyboard warrior. At least back in the 80s Sony and Nintendo openly threw shade at one another. Looking at the figures, Xbox 360 did extremely well with what could be less exclusives than we will see on the Xbox One.

Shock horror!! Since the 360 launched in 2005 to the Xbox One launching in 2013, Xbox 360 had 226 exclusive games. An 8 year period which had a mix of some truly epic exclusive franchises such as Gears, Alan Wake and of course the continuation of Halo…and some pretty poor titles such as Doritos Crash Course and Rumble Roses XX. Not all exclusives are going to be stellar after all. It is true PlayStation has had an impressive start to 2017, which may have set the precedent in terms of expecting more from Microsoft. Horizon Zero Dawn, Persona 5 and Nioh to mention a few absolute gems from Sony will have hit Xbox exclusive gamers hard. It remains to be seen whether that momentum can be maintained for PlayStation, but if we are indeed only half way through this console life-cycle despite mid gen upgrades there is still plenty of time for Xbox to bring their own cards to the table. In fact there are already 147 exclusive games on the Xbox One, on current course of another 4 years for this gen that means we could see a total of 294. Which is more than the popular 360 console. Microsoft have recently promised we have more to come that wasnt announced at E3. Bring on Gamescom!

In conclusion there is still time for the Xbox One. The games will come hopefully which will in turn bring the user base. The Xbox One could have the power advantage matched with more exclusives than the 360. I cant help but scratch my head at gamers I see questioning the exclusive content on Xbox One when I know they were more than happy last gen with the 360. Xbox One X has the power, it has the games in comparison to last gen…so whats the next problem?

Union told me indie games don't count so I'm afraid I'm going to need to delete this thread

He was shocked to hear people complaining that MS didn't show any new big IPs at E3? I am shocked to hear he is shocked. That's been going on for years.

And holding up 360 as some kind of gold standard? Come on. First half of 360 was great, second half mediocre. It's why I drifted away.

p.s. As for indies, there are some that are great, but let's not kid ourselves, people were looking for big announcements, especially with the X1X reveal. You show off a top of the line kit, then follow with a bunch of exclusive* indies that wouldn't stretch the power of a Wii U? You're not to going to impress.

I dunno, Little Nightmares, Ori, and hopefully Cuphead, and I'll throw in Super Guacamele, as the best experiences this generation, for me.

That's cool. Personally, I can think of only two indies that I've really enjoyed this gen (Oxenfree and Inside), and neither comes even close to the experiences I've had with full-fledged games. The others have all been mediocre or mixed experiences, in one way or another.

I started the generation really enthusiastic about indies. I was all about the indies, curated a couple of big threads here focused on them. Over time, my enthusiasm has really dwindled. It's been one of the bigger shifts in my gaming preferences over the past few years. I keep a list of games I'm anticipating. A few years ago, I remember saying that about half of the games on that list were indies. Now, of the 26 games on the list, only 2 are indies (Hob, Vane).

Well written article and couldn't be any more true. I already have more than twice as many games on my Xbox One than I did on my Xbox 360 at this same point.

I currently have 4 right now, when I had over 50 X360 games within the first 4 years.

Installed : 216
Ready to install: 100

I'll for sure hit 700 by Xbox One XL...and I'd consider myself a shrewd spender. I've bought two full priced games this gen.

Sounds like you guys have different taste in games.

1. 360's exclusives in the first half of the generation were Xbox's peak in terms of quality exclusives. I don't see it as debatable that Xbox is somehow in better shape today in regards to exclusives.

2. Indies are not irreleavant. Indies are raising the bar. PUBG and Rocket League are examples that Indies are now gaining mainstream acceptenace. This is extremely important because mainstream acceptance of Indies means bigger budgets and better production values for games not produced by the Mega Publishers. It means a return to the AA games that have been missing.

I think there are two sides to the Microsoft exclusive games story. Fact that Microsoft consolidated studios and is trying to run lean as a publisher continues to give rumors that they have plans to sell Xbox eventually rather than compete in gaming long term more credence.

In the short term, fact that Microsoft is limited on studios and there's very few independent studios capable of making AAA games means they have to turn to a lot of Indies. Opposite of Xbox 360 where instead of fewer big budget games they'll have to turn up the quantity to find some gems. If they can be innovative in working with Indies (the way they did for Ori) and help them establish even more mainstream acceptance, it'll be good for all gamers on all platforms.

Just another spin article froma a r****d who can't read.

People are complaing about a lack of new big exclusive IPs. Trying to use indies to prove otherwise is just hilarious. They showed 22 exclusives, yep, 19 of which were indies, and none of the other 3 were new...their newest exclusive was announced 2 years ago:txbrolleyes:

That's my thoughts exactly, only I didn't wanna post that because I didn't want to receive any of those sad or shifty eye things under my post.

I love those faces, it is a last ditch effort from those wanting to defend but have nothhing solid to defend with.

.

That's not limited to Microsoft though. PlayStation 3 ....the console of no games memes had higher rated exclusives and more of them than the PS4 does at this point in its life. At this point it had Little Big Planet. MGS4, Uncharted 2, God of War 3 amidst other lesser ones (Resistance 1 and 2 , Motorstorm and its sequel and Killzone 2, Uncharted 1. Demon Souls, Infamous)

The two highest rated "exclusives" (read games not on Xbox or Nintendo) on PS4 are both PS3 ports...

Nintendo probably comes out worse if we're comparing Wii to the WiiU. For one the Wii was still alive and had 2 Super Mario Galaxies which are still exclusive and have the same meta as Breath of the wild.

Xbox had 2 new IPs in 2016, none in 2017 and 1 due in early 2018. 3 in 3 years.

PlayStation had none in 2016, 1 in 2017 and 1 due in late in 2018. 2 in 3 years.

Did you really try and include Recore:laugh::laugh:

You are wrong about PS4's 2018 line up.

You also forgot Phil said no new games for 2-3 years.

And your little list does nothing to argue against the piss poor state of bignew exdlusives. You should have just done a shifty face and left it at that.

It's fun to have a bunch of 40 year olds argue about video games :)

Did you really try and include Recore:laugh::laugh:

You included Knack and The Order 1886 and Driveclub..which constitutes over 50% of Sonys new IP this gen thus far.

You are wrong about PS4's 2018 line up.

Not according to Sony. Their big new exclusive at E3 was a remake of SotC...Microsoft did not announce a remake of Forza Motorsport 4. And the only new IP with a 2018 date is Detroit.

That's a whopping 18 month gap between Horizon Zero Dawn and Detroit....following another 18 month gap since 2015's Until Dawn ...are we supposed to be impressed with 3 new IPs in 3 years?

Should MS be s***ting themselves?

You also forgot Phil said no new games for 2-3 years.

He didn't say that though....but im not sure how thats different from Sony confirming days gone, Dreams and Death Stranding are 2019-2021 titles. I am completely in agreement that if all those games were due by mid 2019 it would look bad for MS...but it's not the case, Sonys blasé 'tude is Phil Spencers good fortune.

They basically gave him til next E3 to announce 1 trailer.

And your little list does nothing to argue against the piss poor state of bignew exdlusives. You should have just done a shifty face and left it at that.

Which list? The PS3 exclusive list? Yes the PS3 had more higher rated exclusives than the PS4 at this point...they also didn't show up on PSNow until year 8 which isn't the case this time . And people said it was hard to program for!

I didn't say it to upset, i'm pointing out that generally everyone had more and higher rated games last gen. I thought that was common knowledge in gaming circles so why MS is being singled out for this is curious when it's a widespread issue.

If you're referring to the count, well facts are fact. You don't have to like them, just accept you can't change them.

I think if you gave everyone truth serum most people would say the 360 had a stronger lineup at this point and probably by a good margin. So many are in full spin mode (especially fanboys who bring up Sony despite that being irrelevant to the topic) because they think admitting that means the X1 was garbage which is not the case.

Not hard to have more exclusive games than the 360. Well after 2010 anyway when they only released like 1 exclusive a year and bunch of Kinect shovelware and the PS3 knocked it out of the park.

Doesn't count though. Xbox One doesn't have real exclusives since they're on PC now. Nope, we can't move the goal posts whenever it helps Xbox out and hurts PS.

Well, Kinect shovelware counts as exclusives. Anything counts as exclusives, when you're just adding up numbers.

But there are exclusives, and then there are exclusives. The distinction to me is, 1) does it define the console's identity? or 2) Does it help to move systems? If so, then that's an important exclusive.

I suppose Kinect shovelware helped to define the 360 in a bad way, just as Wii shovelware did, but that's not what I'm getting at -- I mean define it positively, like Halo or Gears did. There are very few indies that would meet those criteria, imo.

Not saying "indies don't matter." Just that all exclusives are not created equal.

I think the ultimate irony is Kinect games are going to be 360 exclusive forever while the majority of PS3s first party software is on PC

I'd say its arguable overall if you include Left4Dead and the first Saints Row but first party its not even close, since Indies don't count now, XBLA and digital only titles are not included

360 launched with Kameo, PDZ and PGR3
XO launched with Forza 5, Ryse,DR3, Killer Instinct and Zoo Tycoon
2006 brought Viva Pinata, Gears of War and NinetyNine Nights
2014 Brought Kinect Sports Rivals, Sunset Overdrive, Project Spark, Killer Instinct S2, The Master Chief Collection, Minecraft and Forza Horizon 2
2007 Brought Blue Dragon, Halo 3, Forza 2, PGR4, Crackdown and Shadow Run
2015 Brought Halo 5, Forza Motorsport 6, Gears Ultimate, Rare Replay, Screamride, State of Decay YOE and Ori and the Blind Forest
2008 Brought Lost Odyssey, Gears of War 2 and Lips, Banjo Kazooie NB, Viva Pinata 2 and Fable II
2016 Brought Gears of War 4, Forza Horizon 3, Recore, Quantum Break and Killer Instinct S3
2009 Brought Halo Wars, Forza Motorsport 3, Halo ODST and Ninja Blade
2017 Looks like Halo Wars 1 and 2, Forza Motorsport 7, Crackdown 3 and Super Lucky's Tale

360 had 22 first party games
XO had 29

Didn't bother mentioning Mass Effect or Ninja Gaiden 2 as they went multi later

No console will have more exclusives than 360. Even though most were junk, 360 had XBLIG which was something like 3,000 games.

That's more exclusives than probably the past 3 generations of all competing consoles exclusivity combined... who knows.

No doubt, most XBLIG weren't great, most were $1-5, but for gamers claiming "exclusives", these XBLIG games are technically exclusive.

Where are the folks that had issues with xbox lack of exclusives? How do they conveniently avoid the thread(s) pro xbox?
