No Games? Xbox One is on track to have more Exclusives than the 360
June 26th, 2017
As E3 comes and goes for yet another year, Xbox and Phil Spencer have certainly been centre stage for many. Since it was revealed in the 2016 briefing that we would be expecting a new console (codenamed Scorpio), which has recently been showcased as the Xbox One X, fans have been even more demanding this year for Xbox to deliver.
There is no doubt that Phil and the team of technical wizards have delivered on one promise…..to create the most powerful games console on the market today. The Xbox One X is a beast of a machine. Now before all the PC big riggers jump on that statement, I know it’s still nowhere near the specs you can get in PC gaming, but we are not talking about a PC, we are talking about a console. We have already seen a shift towards mid gen upgrades with the introduction of the PS4 Pro, which vastly built on the power of the base PS4. It seems many were disparaging of the Xbox One because of its apparent lack of grunt under the hood, so surely now Xbox have addressed that issue gamers will be rejoicing and returning to the platform in droves? Right? Well not exactly. It seems now the focus has shifted from how many P’s a console can kick out to what should have mattered in the first place…GAMES.
So what are gamers complaining about now? Well the apparent lack of new IPs and exclusive content on the Xbox is now the major head scratcher for Phil and good old Major Nelson. After the E3 conference finished I took to Twitter to see the response amongst the hundreds of gamers and communities I follow, only to find many seemed to be feeling pretty disappointed, dispondent..underwhelmed. The surprise I felt at this was somewhat shocking, as I actually came away with a feeling of excitement. Phil and the team had built the machine we were promised, for a price many level-headed gamers were expecting. So what was the issue? Well many were expecting much more from the Xbox in terms of Exclusive games, DLC/marketing deals or perhaps even an old classic revived.
Looking at the stats Microsoft showed nearly four times as many games at this years E3 than it did compared to last. Sea of Thieves and Crackdown 3 we had seen before, added to that finally a release for Cuphead, State of decay 2, Forza 7 and Battlegrounds formed a decent foundation to the conference. The multiplats looked gorgeous on the new hardware such as Assassins Creed Origins, Metro and the brilliant looking new IP from EA called Anthem. Black Desert, Dark Rock Galaxy, new Ori, Tacoma, CodeVein, Ashen, The Darwin Project…the list goes on and on. Although they are not all Exclusives its clear the platform has plenty to go at in the future, not to mention what you can play from the past in the form of 360 and original Xbox backwards compatibility. All in all Microsoft announced 42 games for the Xbox One X, including 22 games with console exclusivity. Is this a lack of games? Did the 360 have the same issue? It would seem not.
Throughout the last generation of consoles the Xbox 360 was a major player. It was an early leader despite its red ring of death issue. Due to the difficulty of developing for the PlayStation 3 Cell technology, added to the ease of making games on the 360, the Xbox platform managed to take quite the slice out of the console user base. It is still regarded as one of the best overall consoles ever created. But did it have the same issue we are seeing now with an apparent lack of exclusive games turning consumers off the Xbox One? I have to be honest I never felt like it lacked. Until I joined Twitter five or so years ago, I had no idea the concept of ‘console wars’ existed and that these kind of conversations consumed many a keyboard warrior. At least back in the 80s Sony and Nintendo openly threw shade at one another. Looking at the figures, Xbox 360 did extremely well with what could be less exclusives than we will see on the Xbox One.
Shock horror!! Since the 360 launched in 2005 to the Xbox One launching in 2013, Xbox 360 had 226 exclusive games. An 8 year period which had a mix of some truly epic exclusive franchises such as Gears, Alan Wake and of course the continuation of Halo…and some pretty poor titles such as Doritos Crash Course and Rumble Roses XX. Not all exclusives are going to be stellar after all. It is true PlayStation has had an impressive start to 2017, which may have set the precedent in terms of expecting more from Microsoft. Horizon Zero Dawn, Persona 5 and Nioh to mention a few absolute gems from Sony will have hit Xbox exclusive gamers hard. It remains to be seen whether that momentum can be maintained for PlayStation, but if we are indeed only half way through this console life-cycle despite mid gen upgrades there is still plenty of time for Xbox to bring their own cards to the table. In fact there are already 147 exclusive games on the Xbox One, on current course of another 4 years for this gen that means we could see a total of 294. Which is more than the popular 360 console. Microsoft have recently promised we have more to come that wasnt announced at E3. Bring on Gamescom!
In conclusion there is still time for the Xbox One. The games will come hopefully which will in turn bring the user base. The Xbox One could have the power advantage matched with more exclusives than the 360. I cant help but scratch my head at gamers I see questioning the exclusive content on Xbox One when I know they were more than happy last gen with the 360. Xbox One X has the power, it has the games in comparison to last gen…so whats the next problem?
