It's Pachter, but this article was re-tweeted by a MS game tester, soooo...... plus it's not far-fetched at all:

http://segmentnext.com/2016/01/09/r...arrive-in-2020-announcement-expected-in-2019/

We are little over 2 years into the current console cycle. Both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are doing really well and are on their way to becoming two of the top selling gaming consoles ever.

Fans are currently busy playing their most favorite games on these platforms, but for just how long will we be using these machines? How long before we need an upgrade to play the latest and hottest releases? The answer to those questions was provided by analyst Michael Pachter.

According to him, we can expect to see the dawn of PS5 and the Next Xbox in 2020. He said it is likely that we may see them in 2019, but he will surely be surprised to see one in 2018. He believes that this console cycle will last for 7 years MAX. Here’s what he had to say:

I would be surprised if we had a next-gen console in 2018; we might have one in 2019, so I think 6 years is likely. We will have one by 2020, so I think seven years is a lock. So, lasting as long, probably not, but lasting longer than five years, probably so.

6 Years is likely, 7 Years is a lock, according to Mr. Patcher.

I recently did an article on how many time Mr. Patcher is wrong with his predictions and our regular readers would know that I am not a fan of him by any means, However, in this case I actually agree with the man.

Pachter's alright, he is one of the good guys.

I agree with him, this generation we be at least as long as the previous.

Yeah I think another three or four years is probably about right for the next stage in consoles.

360 - 2005
XB1 - 2013

PS3 - 2006
PS4 - 2013

I remember people were saying it would be the shortest generation ever due to the power of the systems. I thought and still think those people are nuts.

Nintendo is the wildcard in the equation, will the market be disrupted by whatever the NX is? I'm thinking they probably aren't focussed on XB1 and PS4 but more worried about what mobile and tablet is doing to their business.

PS5 maybe(hopefully not)... Xbox no

Still think the Xbox One will be the last Xbox console, huh?

I think they would be leaving billions of dollars on the table by dropping out of the console market. The Xbox brand makes plenty of bank through Xbox Live, which quite frankly nobody is going to sign up to for online play on any device outside of a console.

Yes I do think its either the last XB,the last MS made XB or if there was another it would be short lived like the Dreamcast.

I wonder if Sting prefers Xbox or PlayStation?

Doh, silly me, he is into his yoga so he probably has a Wii U hooked up with Wii Fit innit.

In Val's defense he also believes Pepsi, Burger King, Sunoco, LG, Samsung, Ford should also close shop because their brands aren't as sexy as their competitions....

The older I get the more I agree with Val. Competition is bad and they just look desperate and not sexy. Also Durex > Trojans and if you think otherwise just commit suicide...

I'm not sure how, explain why MS would sell their console when it continuously sells better than the previous iteration? Makes no long term business sense.

Anyway, I'm going to build up a hot dog stand for a loss for 10 years, then when it starts to pull in a profit, I'm going to sell it off to you. Deal? I'm attempting to explain it...ugh somehow. Anyway, dreamcast? lol, you keep talking about that. Let's hear some valid comparison reasons as to why they're similar situations? Be specific or shut up about it. With love of course.

Phil Spencer has pretty much stated that the Xbox One won't be the last Xbox console. Nadella has made similar comments. The Xbox One is still getting new exclusive IPs which also therefore shows that they want the brand to stay around for at least another decade (well, that is if they are serious about making new IPs become huge franchises and I don't see why they wouldn't be considering they are putting a ton of money into them).

I definitely feel that the next Xbox will pretty much be a Windows 10 TV box with its main menu being the Xbox app but that (obviously) still means that we will see another Xbox.

Anyway, I definitely feel that we will see the next Xbox and PlayStation before 2020 ends. I honestly believe/feel that we will at least see the next Xbox in 2019. I don't think this current gen will last as long as the previous gen.

The idea of Xbox not existing should sting for everyone. Sony needs to be pushed.

I'm not sure why people listen to Patcher. Consoles could come out in 2020, or 19... maybe 18...

Where does he get this insider info??? You'd think with those amazing powers of deduction he'd win the powerball and retire.

I think not, by 2018 console sales will be saturated they will have to release new consoles.

In 2018, PS4 will probably be at around 70 - 80 million units sold, no way is that saturated sales. The PS4 is going to hit at least 100 million this generation, I expect it to become the second best selling home console of all time after PS2. Xbox One is harder to predict, if the 2 to 1 ratio globally remains they are in trouble but if they can continue to track above 360 then they will be fine.

There is no chance of new consoles from Sony or MS in 2018 at all, this gen will be a long one.

2020 isn't exactly a far out prediction. Although I would say this generation will be seven years long minimum, not maximum.

His "expert analysis" is nothing more than any of us could provide. Actually I'd bet on many people here before him.

I think I'm about console'd out tbh. This generation has been so disappointing, I might build a new PC between now and 2020. I downloaded steam a while back and its much more user friendly than I imagined. I just think it sucks you can't really buy one console anymore, one usually has the exclusive advantage and the other has the multiplatform, it's like they're working together so that you have to spend $800 lol

Waiting on a reply. You keep saying Dreamcasted, let's hear why specifically.
MS gaming history is like Sega. Both have been contenders but neither understood the business enough to win a single console generation.(I feel a winning or losing history is key)The closest they got was the last gen and they still couldn't get it done losing billions and this gen the beating is even worse and the victor was decided less then 2 years in.(that's gotta be killing the desire to stay in the biz ) MS doesn't need gaming and you can see from some of the decisions they make throughout the years that they are clueless to what the majority of gamers want. I don't need spin responses from bg saying 1st place isn't important if they are making money...been there heard that. Also There has been numerous rumors that MS was looking to sell the XB brand. Then the games or should I say lack of games. The XBO has put out the lowest rated exclusives this gen and watered down versions of 3rd party games in comparison to the giant S.
MS can't go toe to toe with Sony ie release the same time, put out better exclusives or be more popular.

I will repeat what I see going down and it will be one of 2 things.
MS sells the XB brand(Amazon buying is a guess) or they release another console and get Sega style Dreamcast out of the business.

Bonus info I see the mid gen release of the Nintendo(another winner) NX taking the number 2 spot from MS and giving Sony's PS4 a run.

You asked I answered no need to question me more about this go in a corner and chuckle or hit the laugh button to this post but respect the answer you asked for.

Microsoft would have thrown in the towel with the OG Xbox. It lost money from the start and was never a money maker.
The company has a huge war chest to throw money into the Xbox and obviously (since it has lost millions of dollars on the product according to you) it has the ability to maintain and sustain such a loss.

I see the Xbox brand being around for several more generations.

All they have to do is come out with a more powerful system with an equal price to Sony next gen and watch the tide turn their way. MS has the pockets to make it happen.
