Pachter: Next Xbox and PS5 in 2020

There are so many rumors surrounding the NX. Upgradable, Comes with a handheld device.....no wait, the handheld launches a year before the console. Stream other manufacturers games to the platform (don't know how that would be legally doable)

I'm interested in what it is. But it's way too early to make any kind of prediction on how it will be received.

It stayed priced higher then the competition and survived and that was the point but it went over your head.

Oh and anyone with a brain knows the ps2 outsold the ps3 because of price.
The PS3 launched at $500, not $600. $600 was for the elite model no one bought. And they scrambled to reduce the price. And despite all that, they still hemorrhaged so much money that it took 5 or 6 years to turn a dime of profit. Sony barely survived due to other businesses they have and the very high debt ceiling they were allowed. And even with "surviving," they still had to sell off several different portions of the company just to bob their head above the water. Point not taken.

Honestly I'm thinking it will fall somewhere between the PS4 and Xbox 1 in terms of power. I don't see Nintendo releasing a system that surpasses the PS4 in pure graphical capabilities. They really don't have to anyway.
Great so pretty much all three will be about the same in performance but one will be a gen 9. The gen 9 should spank the X1 and PS4, especially considering how under powered they are.

$600 model nobody bought eh? Got any proof of this? The $500 model was very limited and I don't know a single person who owned one.
$500 is STILL a price that no other console lasted @ and you can continue to mention price drops BUT the other consoles that were $500 or more also had price drops but unlike the PS3 died.

No other console you say. But actually the Xbox One is still around after launching at $500. And Atari lasted several generations no problem despite their much more insane prices back in their day.

But what is your point anyways? That Nintendo can be like Sony and survive the very brink of bankruptcy purgatory death omega to ensue if they launch at $600 or more? It doesn't look like a very strong point.

Ahh that's right the XBO did launch @ $500 and has been surviving.
Atari was not $500 and gaming almost died because of Atari but Nintendo saved gaming.

The point I was making is never say never.

Well actually, yes, Atari did launched at over $500 when you think about it. Way over. Atari consoles were $200 back in the 70's, and that is a ridiculous price of over $750 when adjusted through inflation. And Atari lasted in the game console industry for over 20 years with prices like these. Not that they can thrive like this in today's market, but they did get by in their time.

I think the real question is what the next Xbox will be called. Two?

I think the real question is what the next Xbox will be called. Two?

It'll probably come out around the same time as Windows 11, which will probably be called Windows 12, so Xbox 12?

Or maybe they'll be super stealth sneaky smart and call it Playstation 5. That'll move consoles!

I wouldn't be surprised if the next Xbox is called "Xbox 4K" -- fourth Xbox and I'm positive that MS wants to move away from "resolution war controversies".

I'm expecting the next Xbox to be very powerful based on what MS has gone through this gen. No clue if it will be more powerful than PS5 though (obviously).

It may not matter as much at the rate of Diminishing returns. I just want it to be built around physics crunching. I want more impact on the game world.

I'd say something along the lines of Xbox Infinity is a good bet. I think numbering consoles is becoming a thing of the past. Nobody can catch up with Sony on that. They didn't call the 360 the Xbox 2 because it was one less number than the PS3. I get why they called it the Xbox One but what could they really do next that would make any sense?

I heard Nintendo is going back to cartridges. Didn't see that mentioned in any speculation here.

Xbox Black!

In 2018, PS4 will probably be at around 70 - 80 million units sold, no way is that saturated sales. The PS4 is going to hit at least 100 million this generation, I expect it to become the second best selling home console of all time after PS2. Xbox One is harder to predict, if the 2 to 1 ratio globally remains they are in trouble but if they can continue to track above 360 then they will be fine.

There is no chance of new consoles from Sony or MS in 2018 at all, this gen will be a long one.

Microsoft are on pace to sell more units than last generation. They are, by no means, in trouble just because the PS4 is outselling it. Its like saying that if Toyota outsold Ford 2:1 that Ford is in trouble. As long as Ford is making a profit off the product it doesn't matter how badly they are being outsolde, they're still going to stay in the game. Same could be said in any industry. They won't care what place they're in as long as they're making money. Would they prefer to be in first, I'm sure, because that would mean more profit.

I think they have to close the sales ratio, they do that by continuing to outpace the 360 which they have been doing. 360 had a slow start, however, it saw its strongest sales in year 5 and 6. Their target this gen will be growth over 360 in all metrics, profitability, installed base, software attach rate etc. I use the term 'trouble' in the sense that if the current sales ratio remains they won't see that unit growth, not that it won't make money as a business.

At say 1.9:1 (the current sales ratio), PS4 would need to sell 160 million for XB1 to match 360's total units sold which would be unlikely.

I think the ratio will be closer than that by the end of the gen, as I expect MS will get really aggressive on price in the next couple of years to prevent PS4 disappearing out of sight.

I think it's too early to say XB1 will sell more than 360 did last gen, but it is going to be another long one so it's certainly not out of the question.

I think, as the price continues to drop on the Xbox One you'll see more and more people picking them up. Its amazing that they're keeping pace with the 360 when you consider how many more people are buying the PS4 than they did with the PS3. Curious as to what percentage of households are two console? I imagine a great majority of them right now are 1, as this generation wears on and prices drop I expect that to increase as well.
