Pro Evolution Soccer 2016

I think it's finally back...

All on the online side of things for me now, I hope we hear more about it in the coming weeks prior to launch or I will wait a week or two and read gamer reviews. I haven't owned a PES since 6 (its debut on the Xbox 360).

Looks good, but so did PES 15.

I will hold judgement till I play the demo, which releases next Thursday?

I was wondering, will recent events in Kojima Productions affect PES as well? It has not been commercially very successful in recent years and all the licenses are expensive, so I figure we might never see PES 17?

Doubtful. They not long a go announced a new multi-year deal for the Champions League license. No point doing that if PES 16 is the last.

Interesting. Konami was even killing off some 3DS games in favor of mobile. Guess the new Fox engine would be used exclusively for PES.

It will be used for more than PES. PES isn't even the genre is was designed for.

Oh, and that Champions League license deal was for 3 years. So expect at at least two more PES games.

The pacing and animations in that video look superb. There is no question in the past that PES was more sim than FIFA but lacked the graphics/presentation. It appears they have addressed both of those issues to a degree.

But the keepers definitely need some tuning. Hold onto the frickin' ball guys and stop pushing rebounds right back into the middle of the box. That Neymar freekick...the 2 players in the wall parted like the Red Sea to allow the ball to pass through, lol.

PES has never been more or less of a sim, not even in its PS2 era glory days.

I played both '15 versions of FIFA and PES last year and came away with a definite feeling that FIFA was far more arcade-like where PES felt more like a real match. Of course both fall far short of being a spot-on representation of the sport so I can understand taking a stance that both are arcadey games. I think the biggest difference between the 2 for me was FIFA was more ping-pong passing (granted I didn't use manual controls) where PES had more loose ball situations and required a more tactical buildup from the back to go on offense.

and yet both of those styles of play can be seen week in week out in real life football.

I played both as well. I came away with the feeling that PES was just crap. Its ball fighting system was atrocious. The Goal keepers were terrible and just frustrated the hell out of me. The movement overall just felt off. The ball physics seemed to come from the PS2 era, and the whole game just felt flat.

Add in the horrible menus, terrible music, and a commentary track that is still as woeful as it was back in PES 4.

Both games have strengths and minuses. PES always seems to have the better AI overall. Of course Fifa dominates when it comes to collision physics and such.

If only Fifa had better AI. Every game in Fifa against the AI feels the same. PES has the AI but just about everything else is inferior.

Can not agree with that. When I played PES 15 the players never moved into attacking positions unless I told them to. The defensive A.I would always get caught out by through balls, or lobbed balls over the top. The A.I would never cover space when I brought a defender out of position and they never tracked attackers moving into said space.

Maybe that improved with updates. Maybe not.

In my experience the AI in both games is pretty poor.

I only played the PES 15 demo, but the positioning is just so much better. In Fifa, AI players just run around with super powers, able to turn and accelerate instantly. Fifa has no structure. You just end up having to outpace the AI. PES 14 AI was really good. Not perfect, but better than Fifa IMHO.

If someone like me who doesn't know the game all that well knows they are horribly out of position, that's bad.

Sadly it's the same story with PES every year. Pre-release footage looks promising, people preview the game who aren't PES fans and they think it plays great. Then the demo comes out and people quickly find things they don't like and the cycle repeats a year later. Not saying it's definitely the case this year, but the cycle has repeated for so long now that it's getting silly.

All that said, EA prioritising ways to make more money out of Ultimate Team instead of overhauling popular modes like career mode and pro clubs (pro clubs especially) is beginning to tire a lot of veterans of those modes, so the temptation to switch is probably growing but the licenses and Fifa's larger player base make it hard to make the jump..

Konami just can't put up the resources EA can. This has happened in other sports. EA pours tons into a game and makes it way better. They drive out the competition then they stop making improvements to their games. Every year I play PES, I see the potential for a great game, but it never materializes, plus Fifa always seems to be good.

Madden went to heck after they pushed 2k out. Same with hockey.

Yea, Pro Evo started faltering around 05/06 and EA capitalised on it, Fifa improved massively between 2007-2012 or so. Big gameplay improvements, new modes, old modes were being improved a lot etc. But the last 2 or 3 Fifa's has been fairly standard gameplay improvements combined with a bunch of FUT "improvements" that always seem to be designed to get people to open more packs. Other modes are neglected, career mode and clubs haven't changed much in years and some modes were flat out removed (online team play, match lobbies). They also have a habit of removing or forgetting about a gameplay feature then bringing it back a few Fifa's later as a new and revolutionary change. Shielding the ball is the best example of this, it comes and goes and never has been as good as it was in Fifa 11 or so.

Bit of a rant, but I'm seeing the same opinions more and more on various Fifa forums, the FUT favouritism is seriously hurting the rest of the game. I hope Pro Evo can make a come back, but so far so no luck.

Yep, the exact same thing happened in hockey. 2k hockey destroyed EA for years, but finally started slipping. EA passed them and suddenly everyone blasts 2k hockey online. Now it is gone and NHL had huge features stripped last year, only to be added as "new" this year.

PES is a good game. It might not be as good as Fifa but it needs people's support. Once PES is gone, watch all game modes other than ultimate team disappear. They did it with NHL.

The reason FUT gets the attention is because it is the most played mode.

It isn't like career mode isn't getting changes or improvements either.

As for PES, better to judge next week when the demo drops.

I know it's the most played mode, it's also the only mode that makes them money after they've already got your £40/$60. Don't get me wrong, FUT is a fun mode and the new draft mode looks great but the games other modes are still popular modes in their own right. They deserve a bit more attention especially as some of them have barely changed in years.

What can you really do with Career mode? Keep in mind that proper training sessions are in this year.

As for FUT, it makes me laugh how all these terrible players spend so much money to get the best players. I have lost count of how many times I have come up against a top club packed with world class top rated players and absolutely destroyed them with my 20K team.

Video with a Konami dev on their long term plans to "beat" FIFA. Some new gameplay and decent discussion about their plans.

Demo is out(at least on Xbox One)and is around 3.19GB.

I played a few matches and it does seem like a significant improvement over PES 15. I need more time with it to really judge it, though.

A couple of goales from my 4/5 matches.

It looks better, but the backline AI looks terrible in those videos. Not sure if it is just a difficulty setting thing or what. In the Konami vid it looks like there's someone unmarked almost all the time, but the human player just doesn't make the pass. I haven't tried the demo yet myself.

It may very well be the difficulty in my video. I am playing on the default difficulty, which is not high.

Who knows what button/s you use to fight for the ball?

The A.I grab and push me as they try to win the ball, but I can not seem to do it.

feels like pes2015 with some improvements but nowhere near whats needed. ball physics are still a generation behind and the collison system doesnt seem very dynamic compared to fifa, for instance. game just feels flat and linear.

I agree, it's better than last years but it's still far from what it needs to be taken seriously as an option to Fifa. I found tackling to be... weird. Just didn't feel right, but I need to play a few more games to get a better feel of it. I still love the manual pass feature too and I do appreciate how the midfield is more important than in Fifa. Midfield build up is far more enjoyable in Pro Evo than in Fifa but I have noticed that LB+Y/L1+Triangle passes seem to be really effective in the demo, and they're always a major pain in the arse when they're too easy.

Spent some time with the demo, about 6 matches, and here's my good and bad impressions:

Good
  • Seems to be a step ahead of last years game
  • Many of the player likenesses are top notch. They beat FIFA on many last year and this year they've stepped it up even more. FIFA is going to have to make a giant leap to keep pace.
  • 1-on-1 matchups seem to favor the offensive player (or my defending sucks)
Bad
  • Defensive back line is not playing tight enough or providing proper support.
  • Keepers are making dumb mistakes and allowing themselves to be beat near post too easily.
  • Obviously a little dull without commentators hoping they also left out crowd chants/reactions from the demo too otherwise it needs work.
  • Seeing clipping on players.
  • Referee is a bit timid, not getting yellows thrown properly.

I am hoping this is still an early build as I am walking away with the impression they have shifted to a more offensive minded game that is more like FIFA. If not, I am hoping that some work with the sliders will tone things down for a more strategic match. I do like what I see and can't see myself not having a copy to play.
