Rise of the Tomb Raider announced for PC (Early 2016) and PS4 (Holiday 2016)

The one thing I always said is if the game was exclusive they would have made it more clear. Thats a good reason why people shouldn't have had such confidence in it being exclusive. When they have a game that isn't coming to PS4 they will find a way to make it clear.
Personally, I thought they were hiding the PC availability, hence all the secrecy, like they did with the other games.

Nope. The whole reason it was up in the air is because no confirmation was given, and all available dialogue ambiguous in nature. Confirmation was given just a few days ago. It would be ridiculous to continue to assume or speculate otherwise in light of this recent and official confirmation.

In actuality, it is more ridiculous to speculate and/or make assumptions on things you don't know. As someone who has followed the game's coverage and read the comments from people involved (i.e. Phil Spencer, CD, etc.), the known details of this deal alluded more towards either a period of longer exclusivity or full exclusivity. Reading between the lines is colored by bias and it is better to go from what is known instead of what isn't. Now we know from an official source.

No. You just don't know how marketing in this industry works.

If there was a chance MS and Square Enid could come to some type of deal to make RotTR a full on exclusive, both parties would have went silent on marketing the game, hashed out the details and then reintroduced the partnership as providing the XBO with a true exclusive.

They obviously didn't do that.

Instead, they continued to market the game and avoided the "Is this game coming to other platforms" question, the best they could.

In fact, the general media was reporting that the game was indeed to come out on PC and/or PS4 at a later date.

You do not market an exclusive game and let the gaming media report the game is coming to competing platforms. This obviously leads to consumer confusion which MS doesn't want.

When Phil Spencer responded to an exclusivity question pertaining to RotTR with "Well, we don't own the franchise so..."

The only way that game was going to be a full on exclusive is if Phil Spencer said one of two things...

1) "Yes. RotTR is only coming to the XBox One now and forever."

2) "We're still working closely with Square Enix and we have nothing to announce regarding exclusivity at this time."

When he said what he said, it was a lock to come to the PS4. I guess you just have to use some common sense and have a general knowledge of how things go in this industry to see what was obviously apparent.

Amusing. You don't know me anywhere near enough in any capacity to know what I do or do not know. I just prefer not to make half-assed assumptions or childish jumps in logic.

Never mind all the variables you had to throw out in order to subscribe to such a tunnel-vision sort of reasoning, but it's all speculation based upon conjecture upon conjecture. Not to mention the cherry picking of details and omission of others used to "support" your particular conjecture. An idiot could use such half-assed reasoning and be right 50% of the time, but that doesn't make him any less an idiot or the reasoning any less half-assed.

There are any number of variables associated with a deal such as this behind the scenes, none of which you or I are aware. I prefer to comment on concrete details we've been provided and not baseless conjecture.

You are the last person to suggest a use of common sense or being reasonable. We've all been witnesses to your antics. For one thing, you can't even decide your own level of interest in the game.

What's confusing to you is very simple to me and many others. It turned out just as I knew it would. Maybe I got lucky though right? Lol.

Yes, yes. I have no doubt that you simplify a myriad of details that are otherwise either too difficult for you to follow or contrary to you line of conjecture down to something basic enough for even you to understand.

Yes, by mere probability most people when guessing which side of a coin will land upwards are 100% correct at least 50% of the time. In light of recent confirmation, you indeed were correct. Had the confirmation gone the other way, you would not. Speculation and conjecture are funny that way, at some point when the truth comes out, it either turns out to be right or wrong and is no longer just speculation. However, before the truth comes out, it doesn't make it any less speculative.

Additionally, it turned out just as you "thought" it would. As far as you getting lucky, sure why not? Someone has to get lucky.

Not a surprise a half dozen posters here adamantly argued against this game ever coming to PS4. The same ones who worship one piece of plastic and vilify another.

Sounds like some people are upset in here. The good old console wars. Tomb Raider is a PlayStation franchise, tried and true. The fact that it even graced an Xbox console to begin with is deplorable at best. Just kidding, but come on now. Microsoft really needs to invest in their own IPs.

That Street Fighter 5 and Shenmue 3 though.

Agreed. And they are. At least so far.

Hopefully they continue to bring new IP's to go along with the fan favorites.

Oh yeah. Sony is no saint when it comes to buying up IPs and whatever. I just think Microsoft has a worse track record when it comes to that. Obviously Microsoft needs to do everything they can to make their brand compelling because Sony has been around longer and already has the advantage. So i give them a pass. It would be nice if both companies stopped worrying about exclusive deals and just focused on new games.

I am glad that MS keeps bringing new IPs to Xbox. If they didn't, they sure wouldn't be selling Xbox consoles in record numbers. I love their new IPs.

I don't care about people's stupid console war crap. I don't even care what most people play; it doesn't affect me.

However, when my ability to reason is brought into question, then I'm entitled to respond.

Square CEO on Rise of the Tomb Raider Xbox One exclusivity & Microsoft's passion

"It was never a cold, heartless or thoughtless decision for Square Enix to agree to bring Rise of the Tomb Raider out as an Xbox One exclusive at launch. As he told Examiner.com, Square Enix CEO of the Americas and Europe Phil Rogers knew it was a decision that would cause disappointment at first, but the ultimate goal in mind was to bring Tomb Raider into the upper echelon of gaming's top brands.

"I hope fans know that it wasn’t an easy decision. I think any sort of partnership at this level is a decision that took a longtime for us to get to. The decision at a studio level, we took very, very seriously. We knew it would, in the short-term, disappoint fans," Rogers said.

Fan disappointment has certainly been a result of the exclusivity, but with last week's announcement of when the game will come to PS4, at least everything is out in the open now.Tomb Raider isn't the first franchise to be exclusive to a specific platform, as Titanfall, Street Fighter and Plants vs. Zombies can all attest to that.

All of these games chose exclusivity with being the best in mind. They wanted to have a chance to standout from the rest of the pack and have an individual spotlight shown on them, all in the hopes of grasping that brass ring of the elite. Third party exclusives are a reality of our industry today, and they are a product of the fierce competition between great companies like Microsoft and Sony.

When talking with Phil about the deal, it's easy to get the sense that one of the chief reasons why Square Enix decided to go with a timed-exclusive for the next Tomb Raider is because of one very simple reason: Microsoft's passion for Tomb Raider. "What we saw in Microsoft, which is probably not as well known, is that Microsoft’s passion for Tomb Raider is amazing.

"Having been working with us on previous games in a lesser sense, they’ve been supportive. [However], for Rise of the Tomb Raider, they’ve just brought this passion and belief that has really enabled us to blow people away. People should feel that about Microsoft. Their commitment to Tomb Raider is just amazing for us," Rogers said.

The level of exposure and spotlight that Microsoft has given Rise of the Tomb Raider certainly has made the game one of the must-haves for this coming holiday season, even despite that other little game releasing on the same day, Fallout 4. Rogers spoke about what it means for the company and brand when it continues to Tomb Raider being showcased on a worldwide stage along with some of the biggest franchises in gaming. "To see Tomb Raider showcased with Halo, Forza and Gears and see Tomb Raider there, it’s amazing for us."

"We’re about growing our IP, this is a long-term decision. We’re going to take Tomb Raider up to the next level. With Microsoft’s belief, passion and sort of muscle to help us deliver, we really think this is going to be an awesome game that people will enjoy for years and years to come," Rogers said.

To be fair, the whole reason TR is seen as a PS franchise by some is Sony bought up exclusivity, so there is zero high ground there.

And some people think MS is giving up on Xbox. lol.

MS has been turning up the notches with all kinds of games, aggressive pricing and promos, new OS features, Win 10 integration etc....

If MS was giving up, they wouldn't bother with all this and would have let X1 just do whatever it was intended to do years ago before launch, letting X1 fade away. Similar to MS Zune. High hopes, but just let it ride out till discontinuation shortly after.

Yeh, tomb raider started out on Sega Saturn only for Sony to swoop in and buy the exclusive rights. So I had to miss out. At least Sony fans only have to wait a year.

With all of that doe They need to learn to make GOTY worthy IP's less pretenders and more contenders...
Being them lacking in the exclusive area a person can't get mad(well shouldn't) @ them for buying exclusivity..but plz PLZ work on the games R&D.

Growing your IP is cutting out your largest install base, and putting it on a console where the biggest market for TR (Europe) don't care for the XB1 is sure an interesting way of SE seeing passion.Good luck to the game beating SE's sales expectations. (it won't)

Exclusivity can elevate a franchise. SE made a calculated, rational decision that made the most sense for them. MS did the same due diligence on their end. Those decisions might end up being wrong but the thought process put into them was not one of malice. If SE is really taking the long view of what is best for Tomb Raider as a franchise they maybe it's best to let that play out and judge later.

Europe does indeed like the Xbox. They just like the PS more.

What do you think RoTR needs to sell on the Xbox in the first 3 months to be considered a success? One million? Two million? More?

I'm not asking what you expect it to sell but rather how much you think it needs to sell, to be considered a success.

Although I said three months, that's an arbitrary cutoff. Pick another time-frame if you like.

Obviously we don't know for sure, because we're not privvy to the budget, but I'm just asking for your guess.

No doubt this is going to be a port from Xbox One to the PS4.

They will sell alot, it will be bundled in Europe with a price drop. Announcement at gamescom? Ms will advertise the s*** out of it along with halo 5.
They will sell 1-2mil bundles WW with another 1-2mil sold through.

First of all, I keep hearing this assertion from people that 2013's Tomb Raider wasn't profitable for Square Enix at 5 million units sold.

This is incorrect right? Didn't that Tomb Raider fail to meet sales expectations at the 5 million number?

Can anyone clarify this for me?

With that being said, I think Square Enix has to be pretty happy with 2 million units sold on the XBO in the first three months. The XBox install base won't be that large at that point in time and I think it'll do pretty well on PC and PS4 when it finally comes out on those platforms.

Either way, unless Fallout 4 crushes it, I don't see TR bombing too badly. I'm sure the checks that MS cut for that game just about ensure a sequel in three or so years.

Yeah, it's complicated, for sure, and there's a lot of of unknowns. I figured maybe people had an opinion about it anyhow.

Thinking about that article for few minutes and while I knew SE was disappointed by Tomb Raider I didn't realize it ended up being the best selling Tomb Raider of all time. Tomb Raider's performance disappointed in the company's earnings call after release. That tells me while it was the best selling Tomb Raider of all time the majority of sales occurred once discounting started to occur.

The article mentions the advantages of having 3 launch windows instead one. That may of been a goal of SE doing exclusivity along with whatever financial support in could receive in return also. While overall sales obviously matter when they occur matters a ton. Assuming the theory of 3 launch windows holds true instead of one and if it is a AAA rated game and MS puts in a significant marketing push I think sales will be solid for X1 and PC. I doubt much discounting will occur until the PS4 launch and they will get some game of year, optimized for Ps4 graphics gloss. Assuming that is roughly the plan and since it is cross gen then I think it can break the previous Tomb Raider sales record while pushing up more front loaded, full price sales. That's my guess which will probably be completely wrong.

Definitely expecting a Tomb a Raider bundle for Europe. The series is more popular there and it will be a good way for MS to try and catch up in that terroritory (as they are getting crushed in areas outside of the UK).
