Sony Dropping PlayStation Now Support for PS3, PS Vita and More; Will Be Exclusively on PS4 and PC

Sony drops a bomb on most of the devices supporting PlayStation Now, leaving only PS4 and PC as the smoke clears.

Today Sony Interactive Entertainment hit PlayStation Now users with rather surprising (or maybe not so surprising) news about the service.

The company intents to shift focus of the service exlusively to PS4 and PC “to further develop and improve the user experience on these two devices.”

“This move puts us in the best position to grow the service even further. If you use any of the above devices, we want to give our heartfelt thanks for your support, and we hope you’ll continue with us. Remember that all of your PS Now cloud game saves can easily be accessed on both PS4 and Windows PC.”

Support for the following devices will be discontinued on August 15th.

  • PlayStation 3
  • PlayStation Vita and PlayStation TV
  • All 2013, 2014, 2015 Sony Bravia TV models
  • All Sony Blu-ray player models
  • All Samsung TV models
2016 Sony Bravia TV models will lose the service even earlier, on April 1st, 2017.

While it’s a bit difficult to interpret the consequences and reasons of the move for now, I guess the many predictions we heard of a PlayStation brand moving to a service available on many device instead of a home console, might have been just a bit premature.

And they say MS cancels everything. Good lord, with Sony pretty much canceling PS Now, and closing studios all the time, what will they have left?

I know, right? Why on earth would they remove such a much-loved feature in tvs, and leave it on devices actually suited for gaming? The writing is on the wall, for sure...

The writing is def on the wall. We'll miss those smash hits like DC Universe and Drive Club that are so cherished by many.

They need to can it altogether. Its a poor solution for PS3 BC.

Agree but 0 problem with people posting this about any of the companies.

I've thought about doing this for some games, but I still have PS3 games I could play first. Would be nice if owned PS3 games they offer through Now was free to stream on PS4.

Thank you for your weekly anti-Sony thread.

Wait, i'm confused. Isn't this a positive for Sony?

The argument before was PlayStation doesn't have exclusives anymore because you can play them on not only a PC, but even a TV. Hell, maybe even on a toaster oven soon. No gaming machine needed. At least, that's what Crapgamer has been saying in response to Xbox Play Anywhere.

One thing about them narratives. They always change, and you'll always come away with egg on your face in the end.

I don't understand why Sony would actually limit what devices can use the service. Isn't the whole point of the service that since they are streaming it, that you shouldn't need the latest hardware? Why on earth would you limit said service to PS4 and PC, since those things can already play the latest games with the capabilities that they already have? It seems pretty silly to me.

“This move puts us in the best position to grow the service even further."

WUT? Best way to grow the service is to cut people off of it? This makes no sense, unless they are completely changing the service itself. You still would have less users though. This comment is a real head-scratcher.

you are full of fiction
I tell tales. I tell yarns, I tell fiction.

But mostly, I post stuff in the hope that I can make people smile or laugh... But yeah, I'm full of s***.

I agree.

But Gurrrrlllll. Felicia.

No.

You are wrong on this one.

If ANYTHING negative came up about MS, you've posted it/commented on it.

THATS A FACT.

I deal in facts. Not fiction. reiterate again val.
(I love you Val!)

Prove me wrong.

(Edit, I'm not sure what fictions I've told (excluding silly jokes) but I'm willing to back anything that I've spouted with proof.)

Hey gamers, you might soon able to stream Nioh, For Honor or Battlefield 1 through PlayStation Now.

Sony announced Monday that it's expanding its streaming service's catalog to include PlayStation 4 games. Currently, PlayStation Now, which costs $20 a month, only lets you stream PS3 games to your PS4 and Windows PC.

Sony didn't offer up too many details, other than it plans to kick off a private test with PS4 games on PS Now "in the next few weeks." Subscribers should keep an eye out for an email invitation to the beta.

This news comes on the heels of Sony's announcement last month that PlayStation Now support on platforms other than PC and PS4 will be shut down in the coming months. At the time, Sony said it was shifting its focus and resources to PS4 and Windows PCs. With today's news, it appears it's making good on that move, GameSpot pointed out.

We can now play PS4 games on PC. No to buy a PS4 soon.

As many of you know, PlayStation Now lets you stream hundreds of PS3 games — currently 483 to be exact — to your PS4 and Windows PC.

We’re excited to announce that PS Now’s catalog is set to grow even further, as we’ll be expanding to include a new platform: PlayStation 4 games. All of the games in the service, including PS4 games, will be included with a single PS Now subscription. We’ll share more information as we get closer to launch, so stay tuned.

In the next few weeks we’ll kick off a private test with PS4 games on PS Now. If you’re an active PS Now subscriber, keep an eye on your email in case you get an invitation.

If you’re new to PS Now, the subscription service offers access to a large and ever-expanding library of games. Since PS Now utilizes our cloud streaming technology, you can access the entire catalog of games, select one, and start playing quickly without needing to wait for downloads.

Also, PS Now uses cloud saves, letting you start a game on PS4 and continue playing on another PS4 or even a Windows PC (or vice versa).

If you haven’t given the service a try yet, now’s the perfect time to give it a spin with the seven-day free trial.

Here’s a list of some of the most popular games on PlayStation Now during February:

  • Red Dead Redemption
  • Tekken Tag Tournament 2
  • Mortal Kombat
  • WWE 2K15
  • The Last of Us
  • Mafia II
  • Injustice: Gods Among Us
  • NBA 2K14
  • Sid Meier’s Civilization Revolution
  • Batman Arkham Origins

Actually I'm not sure what fiction I'm selling, because I'm probably the most upfront person on here about being a bad person.

I admit I'm s***ty. Fact. All the other stuff, all the threads, are founded on facts...

No. You'll still need a PS4 to play most exclusives. They're not going to give people less reason to buy the console.

It's good to see Sony continue to make all the right moves this gen. For the players.

They already have nearly 500 PS3 games on it including games like last of us. They will come to the PS4 as well. Especially first party.

While I don't think you'll be seeing games on there day 1 launch, it didn't take long for all the major PS3 games to make the jump, less than a year for some new releases.

If Sony wants to drive this $400m purchase to some kind of return, it's not going to be done with Knack, The nathan drake collection and Driveclub. The whole reason they're adding PS4 games is because not a lot of people are interested in $20 a month to play 5-10 year old PS3 games.....people want the latest and greatest.
