The Official E3 2017 Thread

Even though this is probably fake I have decided I want it to be real

Yup E3 for Xbox might win another year it seems. They have the games, the hardware, the graphics, the performance, the controller and the online multiplayer.

Looks like a win win.
They haven't won a E3 since the 360 days(heck those were some of the best E3's ever)

From Easy Allies via GAF:

Percentage of time spent showing games (vs. talking), last E3:

Sony: 71%
Microsoft: 56%
Bethesda: 50%
Ubisoft: 52%
EA: 24%

I liked the way Sony presented their show last year, just enough talking so it didn't feel rushed.

A self-described "industry cynic," talking about the similarities between the 16-bit era and today:

"Long story short, this time period [the 16-bit era] seemed to focus too much on technology and not enough on games. All I wanted out of the industry – all my friends wanted out of the industry – were games. The magazine pages once filled with previews of new games began to focus more and more on hardware.

"With E3 2017 just around the corner, I fear more of the same. More discussion about new hardware that will already be outdated in a year than a focus on the games for them. I really hope I’m wrong about this and that I’ll walk in there only to be wowed by some fresh game concept that will remind me why pre-order programs exist in the first place. I really hope that I can walk in there and not come out with the same unimpressed vibe I felt last year. I hope I can see an industry that is once again focused on providing wonderful and groundbreaking game play experiences, rather than continuing to hype the boxes that are supposed to run those experiences."

Unlike him, I was very happy with last year's E3, I enjoy my Pro, and I'm interested to hear what additional benefits Scorpio brings to the table. But I agree with his overall feeling that constant talk about hardware is not what I want, not what I'm primarily interested in.

I'm going to be cliché here, but to me, it is always, ultimately about the games. That's what I'm interested in hearing about, much more than the boxes we run them on.

With this move to mid gen refreshes vs actual new gen consoles I think spending too much time talking about hardware can be tricky, you have no new console exclusives that can really show what the new hardware can really do. No game can be made to truly take advantage of the Pro or Scorpio as long as they have to work on the previous machines too. Obviously they'll make the games look better and a bit more stable but they are still going to be anchored to games for a console that's quite a bit older. As long as this is the way it's going to be done from now on it's going to make it a little less exciting when new hardware is shown IMO.

Shawn Layden said it's going to be pretty much the same this year.

Yup. See my post above:

EA is saying they are showing 8 games. 6 are known (Battlefront 2, Need For Speed, FIFA, Madden, NBA Live, Battlefield 1).

Nirolak, manager at GAF, says:

"Based on teasing and statements so far, the other two are probably:
- Hazelight's game (they made Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons)
- BioWare's new IP (This is project Dylan)"

I'd definitely be interested in hearing about either of those projects. EA's conference is Saturday.

Nailed it. That's why PS4 will continue to be the best console this gen. It's all about the games. People wanted to say it was all about resolution but nobody cared about that. People bought into PS4 early because they knew the games would come eventually. Look at PS2/PS3. Slow launches, but picked up steam in the end.

[edit: that was an Xbox avatar, but he changed it.]

You change your avatar so often, even you lose track of whose side you're on.

And Sony's was only 1 hour and 15 minutes. That is why I don't want 2 hour conferences. It just ends up being talking and fluff.

It's always been about the games. It still is. It was during the 16 but era. Both consoles had great games then and do now.

These commentators are acting pretentious and seem to be anti power now when it was all about the power in 2013. Technology and platform features can help make good and great games better. If they didn't, we'd still be gaming on OG Xbox and PS2.

it was all about the power in 2013

It never was though. Xbox fans let themselves feel like lesser gamers because they didn't have the power advantage anymore. If PS gamers acted like they cared, it was just to get under their skin. It's always been about the games. PS1, PS2, and PS3 were all considered the weakest consoles of their respective gens and they all sold close to or over 100 million. Xbox fans are the only people who have ever cared about power. #irrefutablefacts

Power isn't everything but it's part of the equation. Power, price and Mattrick's mouth were the holy trinity for PS4 this gen. Through 2+ years, Sony's only AAA exclusive that cracked through the top 10 in their yearly sales was Bloodbourne. Everything else was multiplat.

Don't feel bad. If Sony didn't get cocky after blowing OG Xbox out of the water with PS2 then it's likely the PS3 would have murdered the 360 as well, giving Sony 4 straight generation wins. Well, i'll give the nod to Nintendo with the Wii because underpowered consoles that focus on games still count in my book. Could just be me though.

Agreed.

The 16-bit era was different.

Now it's focused on MS, Sony and sometimes Ninty. Nobody even talks about Ninty handhelds anymore.

Back then it was Sega and Ninty. They a bunch of handhelds, Neo Geo, game mags would still do pages on NEC/PC Engine here and there, CD players were a new thing, and broad-based gaming mags would have sections on arcade games.

So add it up, and the 16-bit era had more stuff to gab about. The jumps between current and new gadgets were large back then, now it's more subdued. Going from a crusty Genesis to a new gen system like PS1 was like night and day. So mags had tons of pages on specs and weird system architecture. Now, systems get better, but its more like a bump in cpu and gpu speeds. back then it was weird stuff, special graphics chips you'd never get in the PC world, dedicated audio chips etc...

Huh come again more than Bloodborne was in the top 10.
For example off the top of my head UC4 was at 10 million...

PS4 by far has the best exclusives this gen.
