The Xbox One Elite Controller is the best controller I’ve ever used

Xbox One Elite controller sold out:

Updated at 11 p.m. with comment from Phil Spencer.

A $150 game controller is crazy, no one is going to buy one of those! Right?

Wrong.

It turns out that Microsoft underestimated the demand for the Xbox One Elite Controller, which it started selling at retailers today. In reality, few people who didn’t preorder have actually had any luck picking up one of these high-quality gamepads. People on social media are reporting that stores are sold out, and you have almost no hope of getting one online. Obviously, it is selling very well — although Microsoft isn’t providing any specific numbers.

But Microsoft claims that it should have plenty before the gift-giving holidays like Christmas.

“We’re thrilled at the amount of interest we’ve received for the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller,” a Microsoft spokesperson told GamesBeat. “We are working quickly to get more units of the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller in the hands of fans, and look forward to replenishing inventory in time for the holidays.”

If you can’t wait, however, you can still get one — and it’s a pretty decent deal as long as you don’t already own an Xbox One.

“If you’re looking for an Xbox One console as well, another great option for fans is the [$500] Xbox One Elite Bundle, which comes with an Xbox Elite Wireless Controller and a 1TB Solid State Hybrid Drive,” the spokesperson said. “[It is] available starting Tuesday, November 3 at Microsoft Stores and GameStop.”

It’s not too surprising that it’s selling out because it is excellent, and you can read all about it in our review. I asked Microsoft if the response is an affirmation that it is on the right track.

“We are always looking for ways to bring the best experiences to all of our fans on Xbox,” said the spokesperson. “And the excitement and interest from gamers for the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller has been overwhelming.”

On the gaming message board NeoGAF, Xbox boss Phil Spencer reiterated those sentiments.

“[We’re] definitely pleasantly surprised by the consumer response to this product,” wrote Spencer. “The controller was designed for a niche consumer base, for the hardcore and pro players. We did not expect the demand that this controller received. We do plan on increasing production of the product to meet consumer demand.”

If you are just now coming to the decision that you want to buy one, you’re going to find that it really is sold out. That includes all of the following online stores:

  • Best Buy
  • Microsoft Store
  • Amazon
  • Walmart
  • Target
  • GameStop
And this wasn’t because people were rushing out and grabbing the new controller right as clerks were stocking them on shelves. The Elite was on pace to sell out well before today. On Sunday, I checked the Microsoft Store website, and it was no longer taking new orders.

For anyone who did get an Elite order into the Microsoft Store on that last day before it sold out completely, they were notified that the gamepad won’t ship until mid-November. That jives with Microsoft’s “in time for the holidays” statement, since it’ll likely want to get as many Elites back in stores by the big Black Friday sales.

Finally, I would advise you make some calls before venturing out to find an Elite in the wild. I called a few local GameStops, and I had two different associates tell me the same thing: every store only got enough Elites to fulfill preorders. If one store had 30 preorders, it got 30 Elites, and if another only had 1, then it only got one.

That's just crazt. I went to GS to pre-order one, but I was too late. The guy told me that half the people who were buying didn't even know what the new features were. He said people just like to buy the newest controller. Weird. Why pay 150 bucks for a controller if you aren't interested enough to know why it costs that much? I'm irritated :(

Plainview called it months ago. He noticed how the hype around this thing was huge and that it seemed it was way more popular than MS expected. I pre-ordered after reading his post. I'm glad I did.

I'm still having a tough time getting used to using the paddles instead of the face buttons. For years and years only 2 fingers did anything on a controller, now those other ones have to be "trained" in. Probably just me getting old. :)

Check with your local gamestop next week, they might be getting more units.

At least that is what my GS told me.

I got mine Friday. Very nice looking. I really like the weight to it.

I have had mine since Tuesday.

First I set up the paddles. Once I got use to that I went in the software to tweak a few things. Turned the light down, vibration to a lower register and then I switched out the default sticks to the MEDIUM DOME ones. Ahhh perfection for me. Love this thing!

When using this controller on PC, can you still customize the buttons/feedback/etc?

Yeah, you download the 'Xbox Accessories' app through Windows Store.

It's the same as the app on Xbox One feature-wise; with the only exceptions being a few things look slightly different.

"We’ve heard players loud and clear and have continued to improve Elite Series 2 controllers to be more reliable than ever before with refined components that are built to last."

I like that I can use all my extras that I have with my current Elite 2 with this new Core.

Can you remove the supplied battery and use AA batteries?

This new one doesn’t have the paddles?

I ordered a Turtle Beach Recon controller should be here tomorrow. Saw some good reviews for it and was only $60. Tired of the online shooter sweats so might as well join the jumpers and sliders while shooting.

Not for me. All those extras are meh.
But there's no paddles included, right? I use the paddles in every game, I use the bottom ones for left and right (d-pad) to easy swap weapons/ abilities etc in many games and the top ones instead of the LB and RB (never liked how they are positioned), it just feel so much better. The different joysticks doesn't do much for me though.
