What movies have you seen recently?

I also really enjoyed Man of Steel.. we caught it in a cheap $2.00 theater well past it's main run and I'm looking forward to getting a better A/V experience on Blu-ray someday.

Many of the complainers are comic book nerds. They are rarely happy with film versions of their comic books.

Man of Steel needed to be four hours long. It was too congested. I'm disappointed there's not a longer version coming out.

True. I believe it was written by 2 separate guys, and one of them usually writes with his brother (so the writing is more seamless....like they share a brain). In MOS, I felt like I was watching 2 separate movies...it just felt disjointed. The beginning was much better than the rest, and I wish they had gone into more of the backstory.

MOS is divided into Zod and non-Zod part, and the movie might have worked in a very strange way only with non-Zod part. The change between those two parts were somewhat forced.

I didn't think Superman returns was such a train wreck. I thought it was pretty Solid. A bit long, but solid.

Having said that though I really liked Man Of steel too. It's main issue is trying to do to much IMO. which made the movie come off a little rushed and lacking focus, but still very enjoyable. Loved the power they managed to show in that ZOD v Supes confrontation.
Maybe I should view it again. but I remember not being impressed by it.

...agree with you both that it was a bit compressed. I don't think 4 hours though.

Zach Snyder directed and Christopher Nolan wrote it.

i'd have to bring my donut ring for that one.

Can not wait to get MoS on Blu Ray i really enjoyed it. Did not understand some of the hate it got. I thought they did a good job on it.

I watched 21 Grams last night. Damn good movie. Cast was great.

Plainview and Rollins
I thought about MOS more and I have to say that it really was fine as is in length, IMO. Granted you may want a little more timeline, a little more dialogue and maybe get some more classic superman comic references for the purists BUT I thought you could immediately associate with Superman and root for him.
Thats all i needed. Sure it was a bit mindless but it was a lot of fun.

The Conjuring.

3 out of 5 on the creepiness scale.
6.5/10 overall

Yeah, same here. It was good, I'm not saying I was disappointed. It just seemed like 2 different movies; the origin part, and then after Zod came. The origin part had more depth, and I would have liked to see more of that.

I think I might try for Gravity this weekend....only problem is although the previews looked great, they gave me motion sickness. Does the whole movie involve a lot of spinning?

As a surfer such as yourself who has been in the tube upon occasion, I find this ironic!

Yeah I know! But surfing is what caused it....fell off an 8 footer and turned my head at the wrong time, so the side of my head hit the water flush, putting a small hole in my left eardrum. Hasn't been quite the same since! But it was a great day of surf otherwise :)

I was in Disney a year ago and went on that Mission to Mars ride, which is basically like a centrifuge...holy sh*t I almost puked right in the middle of it! That would have been fantastic.

The Purge - 5/10: Dumbest concept ever, I'm sorry but it was and all of the characters were dumb as f*** too.
This is one of the reasons I usually stay away from "horror" movies: the heavy reliance on stupid characters. Nothing pisses me off more than someone obviously doing something dumb just to put themselves in harms way. Pretty much every other type of movie I can shut off to enjoy but not this.

Curse of Chucky
7/10
Better than I thought it would be. One of the better sequels to the series, but still it's a Chucky movie so nothing to special about it. This sequel was more dark and having Chucky going back to his roots like in the first two. Did like the twist along with the after credits scene.

Captain Phillips - 4/10

Didn't really do much for me. Its main issue is it didn't really create any real suspense, or sense of danger. I thought Hanks was decent though.

I do agree that Captain Phillips is not thrilling for the first two thirds of the film. But doesn't the later third go bat-s*** UA93 crazy?

Bat- s*** crazy, No. It certainly perks up in that later third, but between the stupidity of the Pirates and the obvious outcome, it just falls flat. Not too mention the
the typical Hollywood last second command that ultimately brings all aggressors in to view for taking out

Maybe it's because I'm not American, nor from any of the English speaking countries, but I felt that the treatment of the last third was not very favorable to Americans. Of course Columbia Pictures is selling the film as a patriotic one, but still there are quite a few negative depiction of US army. SEAL agents look so startlingly like thugs, their instructions to Phillips are thin, they are lying to both pirates and Phillips after the talk goes sour.

So, while we (and I) do know that the ending, and the suspence does not come from that; instead it's about how far Phillips's positivity can fall, how far he will be isolated, etc.. In that respect the later half was full of desperation, and that was what my friend who watched the movie together agreed with me a lot. (She is a great filmgoer as well)

BTW, at the end of this talk we were both wondering if others - especially Americans - would detect the same thing on the depiction of marines. Obviously you are British, but I wonder what you think about this.

I see and understand where you're coming from, but......My issue here

He is a victim of his own actions.

It isn't until like the last 5/10 minutes that he truly starts to lose all hope and positivity( a very sudden change ). but this is cause his own actions inflame the situation. He knows what is going to happen once the Navy turn up. He flat out says it, and yet he still persists in antagonizing the unstable Somalian. If he did as told and stayed in his seat ( the seat he specifically told them. Knowing a Military take down of the vessel was likely) and put on his gear. His last 10 minutes would not have been so frantic.

The rather quick onset of all hope fading IMO makes it fall flat. I mean If you look at him throughout his entire time on the lifeboat he is cool, calm. He never really struck me as a man who thought he could die at any moment.

Now I understand where you are coming from.

I agree with all of your points. When he loses it in around 130 minutes mark I thought it was very sudden change too, but to me it all started making sense from there. What his calm attitude was hiding, what was he trying to do all the time and why he jumped off the boat. I could finally understand the whole film by then.

But that said. Tom Hank's acting does not show such hint until the very end, and I do feel that the movie might have done it wrong at that point. Another thing I miss from others of Greengrass is the lack of strong conflict between different aims. Bourne films, UA93 and Green Zone was great for final meltdown between different groups and people, and due to what actually happened this movie can't have that, and American navy is almighty. But I forgive everything because Greengrass needed a hit after the undeserved failure of Green Zone.

In order for that to work though you have to show cracks, Brief glimpses of what is underneath, and green grass totally failed in this regard.

you could also argue that everything after that escape attempt had nothing to do with what proceeded it, but was caused by his own failure to escape.

While we're on that escape part.....Did you not find it strange how long it took the Navy to get a flare in the air ? It should have been seconds, but seemed like minutes. Also is it not strange that they had no light on the Lifeboat ? I mean the big ass ships were hard enough to see in the pitch black. So that tiny little lifeboat would have been nigh on impossible to see. I know they have Radar but Military generally work from actual line of sight.

I thought maybe that was the whole point? Where it differentiates itself from patriotism. I'm not sure if that was what actually happened, but the point is clearly to show how unprepared the army was.
