What movies have you seen recently?

The Equalizer 2 - Trash.

Spotlight - Re-watched this over the weekend. Still very enjoyable on second watch.

I'm interested in watching more Horror or Cult Film online, but they're not as easy to find it seems. Most services like Netflix have shifted more towards new TV shows or original content.

Shudder has some old stuff, but a little disappointed they have nothing from David Lynch or David Cronenberg. You'd think a Cult/Horror site would have SCANNERS. Amazon has movies or shows for rent including some older obscure films.

I wondered if anyone has preferred sites from Indy/Cult film.

Also, would it be worth trying a dedicated Cult Film discussion thread? Might be fun to share cult horror finds leading up to Halloween.

I'm loving Shudder personally. Not sure when the last time you looked throught their library was, you may want to look again. Their catalog has grown quite a bit in the last few months. I just watched Cronenberg's Rabid on Saturday on Shudder, it looks like they have Dead Ringers as well. I'm fairly sure Scanners is on one of the Premium channel's digital libraries right now (can't remember which, I just looked through all 4 I have last week), they usually lock down their titles for the period they have them. Shudder has several other "bigger" name indie / cult horror directors on thiere: decent amount of John Carpenter, Dario Argento, Mario Bava, , etc. They've grown their Japanese and Korean libraries quite a bit lately too. I was shocked how many movies from the Shock Waves' podcasts top 100 best horror movies they have. They're getting some surprisingly good exclusives lately as well (Mayhem, Revenge, etc.).

Speaking of Shudder, watched 4 more movies from the Shudder Joe Bob Briggs special:

Tourist Trap - I haven't been so scared of mannequins since the first Condemned game!
Sleepaway Camp - I kinda guessed the ending, but was still not expecting them to reveal it the way they did...
Rabid - Maybe the best movie with a porn star in the main role I've ever seen... Pretty unique and well done older zombie movie.
The Prowler - Crappy movie with really good effects / kills. The director and special effects artist would immediately make the 4th (and best) Friday the 13th after this.

Outside of Shudder:
Baby Driver - I liked this quite a bit, maybe not as much as I'd hoped / expected, but still quite a bit. Quite entertaining, Foxx and Hamm wre great. I imagine that will be the last thing I'll ever see Kevin Spacey in!

Menace II Society - Been a long time since I’ve seen this. It’s on Netflix. I’ve always liked this more than Boyz N The Hood. The scene when he visits the guy he looked up to as a father in prison gets me in the feels every time.

Am just disappoint Shudder does not have ERASERHEAD.

Oh well, seeing some David Lynch stuff on Amazon Prime.

Leave No Trace - I loved it but I wouldn't recommend it to everyone. It was raining on my face during the last 15 minutes of the movie.

It's good....But better than Boyz N the Hood, nah!

Just watched Ready Player One on 4K Blu Ray, I really liked it. Yeah parts of it were cheesy but it's worth watching for the visuals and nostalgia alone.

Also watched the new animated movie The Death of Superman, it was alright but the fight between superman and doomsday wasn't as good as it was in the older Superman: Doomsday movie that came out in 2007.

IT - 7.5/10

it was good, not great.
One of the things that was annoying and made me not as sympathetic to their situation is how they go into the house KNOWING and ACKNOWLEDGING that they need to stick together... then they split up like 3 times without even trying lol those things are so lame in horror movies

Worth buying in 4K?

John Dies At The End

Decided to browse Shudder and watched this. Very weird random kinda low budget horror flick from Director Don Coscarelli adapted from the book by David Wong.

The main characters gain psychic powers from taking a drug from another dimension known as The Soy Sauce and become slacker exorcists. It's a decent effort with good funny moments, but I wish it could have been developed as a Netflix TV show. Now it sits left as a stand alone film with the director unlikely to get the new books made as sequels.

I saw this a few years back when it was on Netflix, don't remember much of anything other than Paul Giamatti being in it.

I’ve seen 49 movies since I got it in September. Plus another 8-10 because of going so much getting free points. And a whole lot of popcorn! I think I’m addicted now!!!
Annnnnd it happened. We'll see if someone picks it up, but I don't have high hopes.

Saw 6 movies with it since I bought the $30 deal they had, so I definitely got my money's worth I guess.

no one is gonna pick that s*** up lol they made like 40m loss every month

dumbest business plan ever... you cant make profit if you make a loss each time your users use the service lol

any other subscription service will either put in more limits or atleast using it once wo t cost them money so you can make some profit of the people that dont use it often

Finally watched Infinity War, bought it on XBL in 4K and honestly I'm a bit disappointed with the movie. Some of the special effects were pretty bad, especially when masks and helmets came off and when
Banner was shown with his head sticking out of the hulk buster it looked fake as hell lol.
I thought Thor, Iron Man, Dr. Strange and Spider-Man were the best parts of the movie, didn't care much for what the other characters did. It wasn't bad at all but as with Black Panther and Wonder Woman I think too many people built it up to be far better than it actually was.

I thought it was easily the best marvel movie, it was non stop

Villian that actually had a plan that made sense and wasnt just "DESTROY EVERYTHING", acting was top class, the "drama" hit for me, the comedy hit (especially the GoTG and thor stuff). I cant wait to buy the 4k blu ray, but might change my mind in second viewing

and obviously its a 2 parter but i still dont remember a movie that ends on villian 100% winning, achieving their goal

btw i am guessing you are in the U.S cause we dont get 4k movies on XBL

Yeah I'm in So Cal :) That's too bad you don't get 4K movies on XBL, you'd think that kind of thing would be universal.

I felt the movie just had issues, some of the things that happened were just stupid like when
Starlord started punching Thanos when he knew what was on the line
. Thanos was a great villain and the big battles looked nice for the most part but I just don't think that it told the story as well as it should have, plus we all know
none of those people who disappeared are actually going to stay dead
so it kind of takes the impact off of it a bit.

for me that stupid thing was stupid but, when i thought about it, it was in character, but yeah at the time i was also like "what you doing! so stupid" lol

and yes those people who turned to dust will be back but i still think ending to movie on such a win for the villian was brave decision. They didnt do a cheap end like how BvS, for example, where they pretty much confirmed superman was fine... eventhough we knew he would be we didnt need to KNOW KNOW if you know what i mean lol

Thanos isn;t really a villain. He is noir character.

Watched all of these via Amazon Prime with the "Download" functionality on their tablet while travelling this week. It's great to be able to watch a movie while sitting in the airport, flying, etc. without having to worry about having a connection or not.

Braven - Surpringsly well done low budget action movie with a good cast (Jason Momoa, bad guy from Don't Breathe, etc.), well written characters, and nice cinematography.

Deep Red - Following up my recent Dario Argento obsession. Great old Italian slasher movie. Incredible cinematography, soundtrack, and kills. I'll be buying this on Blu-Ray ASAP, loved it.

Opera - More Dario Argento. Continuing with incredible cinematography and kills, but a bit more grim and disturbing. I liked aspects of it, but it's not one of my favs of his, a bit sloppier and less enjoyable than his earlier works.

The Big Sick - Well done comedy / romantic comedy. Probably a bit more heavy on the "feels" and a bit lighter on the "funnies" than I was expecting. Still enjoyed it quite a bit.

Logan Lucky - I liked this even more than I was expecting. Really fun red-neck "bank-heist" type story with a great cast and director. Wish I would have seen this much earlier. Lots of fun.

The Quiet Earth

Flipping through SHUDDER, I found this old cult sci-fi flick. Not exactly horror, but a surreal last man on Earth scenario. It unfortunately is a B-Movie production. The first half of the movie showed the main character cracking up from isolation and with some good, bad, and weird parts.

Eventually, he does find other survivors, but learns the 'Effect' caused by a research lab might happen again further destabilizing reality and tries to stop it.

I really enjoy surreal mindfvck Sci-Fi and this was a great effort. The ending doesn't make much sense, but I'm totally fine with that.
