Short answer.. there are slight but discernible differences based on which headset you use....
I tried several of the "compatible" versions before realizing the sound difference lies in the quality of the headphones versus the SPUs offered with pervious versions of headsets tailored for consoles and PCs in general..
To give you an idea - I tried the XO7s, Polk Audio 4 shot, and another released "gaming" headset before switching to targeting more mainstream headsets with true active noise canceling capabilities...
Why? in general - the headsets all presented very similar surround sound effects due to them all using the same SPU (X1 via wireless header adapter). Between them all - the Polk Audio headsets actually had the better overall sound and better stage presence. The remaining gaming headsets were fine but typically overcompensated with heavy bass, etc.
The primary reason I returned the 4 shots were due to the integrated mic issues (which I think still are unresolved and they sent out a boom mic to users instead)... and they were a little heavy for my taste.
At that point I realized that since the headsets all presented with a similar sound experiences, it became more important for me to choose the headset I wanted for other reasons outside of just gaming - i.e. weight, noise canceling capabilities, sound (music listening, etc.), portability, comfort, looks, ........
Hope this helps or answers your question...
