There's a Balrog in the Woodpile

That is the unfortunate thing about owning a MS product. Here's to hoping that we'll see Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon come back on X1 though. Those 2 titles alone should hold off my JRPG cravings for a while.

I dont understand. The 360 was the top console of the current gen without them. I personally use to love them but who has the time anymore to invest so much into JRPG's like we could ten or so years ago? A good ten hour or so game can last me a week with my busy schedule and the occasional dip into other entertainment features like Netflix (for the lazy days and Sundays) and music that I use throughout the week.

People dont want to believe it but the Japanese influence in the gaming industry is no longer what it use to be.

Perhaps MS should have tried co-branding Xbox with a well known Japanese company.... Panasonic, Sharp or whomever. That's just for the hardware. All the software can remain as is.

The Japanese market is unique as typically hardware/durables are very Japanese centric, while in other parts of the world, a mix of US, Euro and Asian brands can all prosper. Just like gaming. Games made from a dev made in any corner of the Earth can do well. But the Japanese consumer is very focused on Japanese electronics/software.

MS did very well despite selling hardly any 360s in Japan. I think only about 1-2M total. I bet us Canucks here in the Great North bought more despite having a population size about 1/4 Japan.

MS has the money to do whatever they want, but sometimes it's best to cut the cord and move on.
The first time they walk into an Xbox owners house and see what Kinect 2 can do, they're going walk out thinking, I gotta get me one! Japanese just love new, modernistic tech.

I don't think there should be much argument that the Xbox One is the more interesting console features wise, while the PS4 is obviously going to be the more powerful raw system for straight up gaming.

I don't see the problem. Perhaps by mid generation a lot of people will actually feel the need for both consoles because they will offer something better by having both. No problem with that from my perspective.

Statistically, Microsoft is at the same stage in Japan, as they were, worldwide, at the end of the first Xbox generation. 1.65 million 360s have been sold in Japan VS 9.5 million PS3s. Multiply the 360 numbers times family members of 360 owners, and for Japan, that constitutes significant market penetration.

Wii was top console current gen. :p

Obviously? Is that so? Do tell....

The Japanese Market is always hard for Westerners to crack. Still, Microsoft has a firm toehold, now, and a loyal fifth column established. Just sit back and watch what word-of-mouth will accomplish, this gen.
Well the market for Japan is broken, hell they dont even know what to do. When you have Japanese developers talking how bad the Japanese developers are today its safe to say that MS and SONY did the right move not to put Japan first.

People who like jrpgs don't give a damn if 360 was top without them. It doesn't change the fact that some of us enjoy them and would prefer a console with them.

Why not obviously?

All we have to go on is specs at this point. I think it's fair to say that the PS4 is expected to be significantly more powerful. I wish it weren't true, and hope that it's not noticeable though at the same time as an Xbox fan I wouldn't mind seeing MS having to work harder on the game front to get their market share like they did with original Xbox.

Does that equate to real world noticeable difference? I'm not sure and neither is anyone else until we have some hindsight to go on.

I'm just saying that I think (my opinion) that the XB1 is more interesting because of its features, while it seems the PS4 will have greater graphical capabilities but be a more straight traditional console who's online/media/social/interactive camera features won't be as impressive or usable as the Xbox One.

Look, we've yet to see if the PS4 is really more powerful, but if that's something that bothers you then you should definitely prepare yourself. This isn't 360 vs. PS3 where the PS3 had the cell processor, they've got very similar architecture and on paper the PS4 has significantly more horsepower in the graphics department and way faster RAM. Simple as that.

Did I mention I'm an Xbox enthusiast with no plans to get the PS4 (hate the thumbstick layout on the controller)

No vulgarity, please, or the wrath of the Anderson will befall you. You have every right to like your console-of-choice.....as do others.

Just, play pretty, children, and don't be drawn into meaningless brawls that prove nothing.

It's what it is. It's a place to sell things. Becoming accustomed to it's ways is the key to success.

I'm just expressing my opinion. I doubt Mcmasters wants to brawl and I'm certainly not interested in that neither.

Just giving my perspective on what I think the possible differences between the two consoles might be going in and that I think it's healthy for the game industry that there will be differences.

Also, "damn" is a vulgarity? (should be "damned" first of all, haha)

Who cares? I don't. Thank goodness for the Ps4 the eh? No need to get butthurt over it mate. I simply stated that the 360 did more than fine without them.

Expectations are well and good but there is nothing to suggest that the Ps4 will be the most powerful. In fact, there is more evidence to suggest that this isnt the case at all. Granted I'm not bashing on it, but the proof is in the pudding whereas your statement suggests that there is some sort of hard evidence to prove your humble opinion. This isnt the case. I'm not one to believe what one tells me because they say it true. I need to see for myself, and bluntly put, the paper specs you speak of is hearsay up to this point with no evidence. You got to WALK about it, not TALK about it mate.

I think people have been listening to Sony spout the same archaic nonsense since the beginning and most are willing to just take as gospel. I'm not stating that the Ps4 isnt powerful hardware, but I refuse to believe a sheet of paper over what I see for myself. My opinion here isnt a troll attempt, but lets be honest: we havent seen anything to suggest that what we've heard about the Ps4 is anything more than what we have always heard from Sony and next generation is no different. Hell, I'm not even saying that the Ps4 won't show this alleged power, because as we both know, it very well could and thats fine. My point is that we haven't seen anything to prove it to be the most powerful....yet, if ever. And trust me, what I've seen of the Xbox One is more than fine with me so I don't have to worry about being disappointed.

So no my friend; I do not agree with your opinion because there is nothing to prove this aside from a piece of paper with the word POTENTIAL spelled in big letters--if you get my meaning.

I don't disagree with you at all.

It's all on a piece of paper at this point and I'm sure we can all remember the hype on the Cell processor and how that turned out in hind sight.

Something about blowing steam?

So far, but the current gen continues, even after the launch of the next. Both competitors are still in production and still supported.

What does that have to do with anything I said?

He said 360 was on top current gen, that's not true. Wii sold at least over 20 million more than the 360. As for PS3, it shipped about the same amount as the 360, maybe a "tad" bit less, but we really don't know.....yet that's with the PS3 being an entire year younger than the 360. We're also seeing more people playing games on the PS3 such as GTAV, BF3, BC2, as well as other shooters. We also continue to see great games being released for PS3 such as The LAst of Us. Considering all that, it might be a bit premature calling 360 as being on top this gen. For starters, we know it's not true, and when this current gen ends, it could very well be last.

How about both the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 sold amazingly well last gen, so close that it's meaningless to argue about sakes and both were two top consoles that delivered on games for 7+ years and they were both a great experience for gamers but still got pwned by the Wii in sales?

True dat. The Wii sold much much more, while the 360 and PS3 are almost about the same in sales. Strange to say 360 came out on top, when not only did they not, but they maybe very well coming out in the bottom.

At this point it's splitting hairs. You have to think, with the 360's red ring and PSN getting hacked, both companies still sold 80,000,000 consoles world wide. Add in the Wii's 100,000,000, that's ~260,000,000 consoles sold last generation. That's incredible. The Super Nintendo only sold ~50,000,000. Genesis only sold ~40,000,000.

Simply, it was an amazing console generation.

Well just because apparently the majority of people don't play JRPGs anymore doesn't mean they aren't good games. I would love to see some more good JRPGs come to either console.

Why is the "winning" of last gen solely based on console count? I would think if you counted software sales (attach rate), accessories (like Kinect), and services ($ XBL) in addition to console count...could that not put a better perspective on bragging rights?

Me too. If only MS would realize that many western gamers are going to buy a PS4 over Xbox One for the simple fact that the 360 library has been severely lacking in Jrpg offerings.

Depends. 360 had more sales in software for some titles like CoD, but even that's splitting hairs, as the CoD sold almost as much on PS3. There have also been plenty of other games that PS3 either sold about the same, or even more. That's not even taking into account the PS3 exclusives that have sold well, and continue to sell well.

In the end, yeah, maybe 360 sold a bit more software than PS3 (which we really don't know the big picture), but it's probably so close, that it's a moot point like Plainview said.
However, we do know that the Wii spanked both consoles, so the Wii is the clear winner. That's not even up for debate. For example, I think Mario Cart sold more than any PS3/360 title to date.

Also, and I KNOW that this is all anecdotal, but there are always more people playing on PS3 for BF3, BC2, Crysis 3, MoH, and most, if not all, CoD games.

Yet 360 had the JRPG momentum for most of the gen from the start, yet that didn't seem to be any argument for selecting the 360 to MS haters. That is what I call dumb; when missing out on something good and filling one's need because of a brand name.

I know you're joking, but just to clarify, I don't have any problem with vulgarity; I use it all the time.

I don't get why people become so focused on sales. Better sales doesn't mean you have a better console. It means you have a more popular console. It means your console has more mass appeal. Ok. So?

The Wii sold the most this generation. Anyone think the Wii is the best console around? *crickets* What's your favorite band? Chances are, ABBA outsold them. ABBA wins!

I know there's a connection ... sales -> financial success -> games will come to that console. But beyond that, I don't care if Sony sells a few million more than MS or vice versa. It's just an issue of which one has more mass appeal or is more popular. That doesn't equate to worth or value.

For what it's worth, the only reason I bought my 360 was for its JRPG exclusives and Gears so it did influence my decision to purchase one.
