There's a Balrog in the Woodpile

The Wii outsells in both console and software. And now with next gen on the horizon, the 360 and PS3 will sell less.

This generation went to Wii.

I did some checking online and the Wii in fact didn't even come close to selling the amount of software that either 360 or PS3 did. So yes, Wii sold the most consoles (to nursing homes that bought it for the pack-in bowling game) but not even 1/2 as much software as the other two consoles. That brings me to my original thought in why the "winner" is only counted by units of console and not take into account the big picture (consoles + software + accessories + services).

Not a big deal to me, just curious.

Then I suggest you do some more research. Last I remembered, games like mario kart, mario bros, etc sold better than CoD. AND, once you remove CoD out of the equation, sales drop dramitically for most 360/PS3 games.

Example:
http://mynintendonews.com/2011/11/3...wii-has-sold-an-incredible-28-million-copies/
That's 28 million back in 2011 (2 years ago), and we all know the game continued to sell.

http://www.videogamesblogger.com/2010/01/25/new-super-mario-bros-wii-sold-10-million-copies.htm
Super mario brothers sold 10 million copies in 2 months (halo 4 didn't even sell 10 mil in a year). come to think of it...none of the gears of war games sold 10 million.

And there are other top Wii game sellers. Wii did incredibly well compared to 360/PS3.

The point is all software and more specifically non-console-company software and prices. Remove Wii's top 5 games, recall that many games were sub $40 and Wii is far from total sales across all software to either 360 or PS3. WiiU is experiencing the same issue but without the cheap aspect of the Wii's control basis it has even lost the cheap game library, thus why the software companies are all dropping support one after the other; no money to be made from investment.

You don't even need to research much at all to see this.

Qbert, I took Oblong to be referring to all software sales for the platform combined, not just sales of top franchises. Sure, Mario games sell by the truckload. But everyone knows, I think, that third party games (i.e., the overwhelming majority of games) did not do well on the Wii.

Exactly, I am talking lifetime software sales for each console (how else would you measure the overall best performer for a full generation?). In that regard the info I found showed both 360 and PS3 had more than double the total of Wii.

And neither do the the majority of 360/PS3 games. It's near impossible for anyone here to claim that 360 outsold Wii in terms of software, but what we do know is that the top Wii games sell much much more than the top 360/PS3 games. We also know that the Wii has sold well over 20 million more units than 360/Ps3.

Care to link to the info that tallies all software sold for each console? Not saying it doesn't exist, but if it's out there, that'd be cool to see.

Why even bother? Nintendo has a history of being a console that continually fails to be lucrative to 3rd party games for the current and previous 3 generations. This has always been known.

There is one showing the 360 and PS3 already way ahead of Wii by the end of 2008 and considering the titles after that point I am sure the gap only grew larger. Can't find the more current link I found but will search later when I get home if you want.

Is there anything that shows totals up to a current year..............and not just NA (I mean, the chart only shows up to Oct 2008 )?

And if my old eyes aren't deceiving me....Wii was WAYYYYY ahead of PS3, with Wii catching up to 360.

For the record....I'm not saying with 100% absolute surity that Wii is the winner. Just saying, based on what I've seen, it looks like Wii is the winner. Wii has sold so many units, and the top Wii cames have sold wayyyyy more than the top 360/PS3 games. What's left is trying to figure out if the other games sold by either of the 3 consoles would total up enough to make the top sellers not matter.

I told everyone two years ago Sony would flood the market with cheap knockoffs of their original SKU and catch up and surge ahead. It's been THEIR marketing style the last three generations. Remember those cheap but charming little playstations way back when and those cute little attachable popup screens?

If you really think the Wii was part of this "generation" you fell and hit your head. COMPLETELY different market. Just because they are "consoles" doesnt mean they are on the same level. Its like going to a pool at a country club, you have a kiddie pool, an adult pool. Kids movies, etc, RAKE in cash. But to compare the Wii with the PS3 or 360 is like comparing Nemo to 300.

Gotcha, take the console you don't care about out of the equation. Makes sense.

The thing that always strikes me as odd is when things happen like MS announces they've gotten to 80M consoles shipped and Sony doesn't - I always imagine that there are some gamers out there waiting to hear from Sony about their numbers so they know whether to kick a kitten or tug their joystick.

Maybe it could be that some people just choose to ignore when Sony does make these announcements.....

Right, but they haven't announced 80M yet. At least I seem to recall that being the whole barking point between team green zealots and team blue zealots when the MS announcement over 80M came out - Team Blue claims Sony's leading now, and Team Green says that if so, why haven't they announced that 80M? Kittens and tissues everywhere are awaiting their fates.

meh, i don't think it matters much. This 70 million sold was announced back in 2012. we all know that by now, there a few more million that had been shipped/sold. It may not be 80 million yet, so Sony doesn't consider it a passed milestone yet, but I'm sure it's pretty close to it.

At this point, we know the amount shipped/sold is close between MS and Sony. Any difference in numbers really is going to be nit picking numbers.

Yeah, and more importantly it doesn't really matter. :)

Unless if it was another landslide win again for Sony we may not be having another xbox launched so to xbox fans it would matter.

Pretty simple console sale wise this gen ends.
1# Wii
2# PS3
3# Xbox 360

Awesome!! Lower tech dominates yet another gen.

the only tie that Wii has with the current generation is that it was built in the 7th generation..same things goes for the WiiU..yet there is nothing about it that makes it next gen, in fact the specs compare to the 360/PS3. Nintendo has been putting out consoles one generation too late.

Wrong. We keep hearing from outside this site that all that matters is 1080p. IQ does not matter. The wiiu has more 1080p games than either x1 or ps4 therefore it has won the generation.
