There's a Balrog in the Woodpile

I know you're joking, but just to clarify, I don't have any problem with vulgarity; I use it all the time.

I don't get why people become so focused on sales. Better sales doesn't mean you have a better console. It means you have a more popular console. It means your console has more mass appeal. Ok. So?

The Wii sold the most this generation. Anyone think the Wii is the best console around? *crickets* What's your favorite band? Chances are, ABBA outsold them. ABBA wins!

I know there's a connection ... sales -> financial success -> games will come to that console. But beyond that, I don't care if Sony sells a few million more than MS or vice versa. It's just an issue of which one has more mass appeal or is more popular. That doesn't equate to worth or value.

Better watch your back! Cutting is coming after you now!

;)

I don't get the reference.

It's in the post you quoted (What is your favorite band? Whatever it is, chances are, ABBA sold more albums than they did. So ABBA wins? ABBA is the better band?) I'm using the video to poke fun at people who take these sales numbers contests seriously.

Unfortunately, now I've got that song stuck in my head, lol.

My attitude is: if somebody loves their loves their Wii or Wii U, well God bless'em and let them enjoy them in peace. Same for the PlayStation of whatever edition, I still have 1&2. All I ask is that they don't hang out in the Xbox threads, cursing and swearing and getting their knickers, all in a twist, just because the Xbox fans love their console too. "Vulgarity" wasn't the right word; I just used it as a catch-all for personal insults and name-calling. :D

What does that have to do with anything I said?

He said 360 was on top current gen, that's not true. Wii sold at least over 20 million more than the 360. As for PS3, it shipped about the same amount as the 360, maybe a "tad" bit less, but we really don't know.....yet that's with the PS3 being an entire year younger than the 360. We're also seeing more people playing games on the PS3 such as GTAV, BF3, BC2, as well as other shooters. We also continue to see great games being released for PS3 such as The LAst of Us. Considering all that, it might be a bit premature calling 360 as being on top this gen. For starters, we know it's not true, and when this current gen ends, it could very well be last.
Exactly my my point. Numberswise, one or both might end up passing the Wii. Also, you're in a thread with a lot of Xbox fans. You're going to encounter a lot of Xbox enthusiasm here. Get use to it.

At this point it's splitting hairs. You have to think, with the 360's red ring and PSN getting hacked, both companies still sold 80,000,000 consoles world wide. Add in the Wii's 100,000,000, that's ~260,000,000 consoles sold last generation. That's incredible. The Super Nintendo only sold ~50,000,000. Genesis only sold ~40,000,000.

Simply, it was an amazing console generation.
Yes, and for next few years at least, we will enjoy an era of concurrent generations.

Last I checked, I was in the multiplat forum, not the xbox forum, nor is this an xbox site.

There's no chance that the 360 or PS3 will outsell the Wii. The Wii has a lead of over 20 million. It would take the 360 at the rate they sell right now, at least 2 years before catching up to the Wii. The Wii outsells in both console and software. And now with next gen on the horizon, the 360 and PS3 will sell less.

This generation went to Wii.

Nintendo will cease producing and supporting the Wii, long before MS and sony will their consoles, and the 360's attach rate blows the Wii out of the water.

Sad (not really) that I must have subconsciously skipped that sentence. :D

Sorry about the song in the head thing...

Nintendo stopped producing the Wii a couple of months ago. They just announced it was discontinued the other day.

Despite what doom and gloomers say, every generation has brought on more console sales and software sales. And that excludes all the digital sales current gen gets which should be higher margin products than physical sales as a retailer takes a cut and they have to go through the hassle of material and shipping costs. Will next gen fizzle out since Wii U is going nowhere to help out the collective industry? Maybe. Who knows how well X1 and PS4 will carry the torch. But going by the hype and pre-order limits, it seems next gen consoles are pre-selling a lot better than past gens.

The key isn't hardware or software sales. It's companies keeping their costs down and maintaining profitability.

Microsoft easily won the generation software and service wise. That isn't some mystery or unknown thing no matter how many times @Qbert has this conversation with people. lol

COD sold 10-20% better every single release, games like Fallout 3/New Vegas/Skyrim apparently dominated on 360 often getting almost double the PS3 number, and GTA 4 apparently had a large gap too. There were very few games that were really that even and a very very few that sold more on PS3.

It largely had to do with the momentum of a year head start.. but also likely had to do with XBL being more cohesive from the start. People built friends lists and habits and carried them through most of the gen.

PS3 is now "almost evenly" selling things.. difference isn't 25% it's 10% in multi-plats with more titles.

But that's still a difference. One that you'd have to be a weirdo to ignore if you are talking about these numbers. A 20% difference in hardware sales for instance would be considered quite large.

Long run the hardware was a toss up obviously and may go to or already be in PS3's favor. But it's been clear, and in no way a mystery, that the XBox 360 has been the "primary game console" for more people than the PS3 has through the entire generation.

Well said.

And not only are 360 software sales typically better than PS3 despite both selling about 80M units each, 360 had millions and millions of RRoD consoles compared to fewer YLoD PS3s.

So the actual number of active consoles is probably in favour of PS3 by millions, yet most games still sell better on 360.

Too lazy to dig up the Gamespot console usage survey, but PS3 had more people watching movies than playing games, while 360 was more about gaming than DVD/Netflixing.

Qbert can't help it. His ego, his self image, his very self esteem is inextricably tied to the PlayStation. Any perceived slight, affront or insult to his adopted cultural icon is taken as a personal affront. He feels threatened and lashes out. This is the root cause of fanboyism.

Are we talking about the same Qbert?!?

People can make it personal against me, whatever, no sweat off my nut sack.

But...
1. I'm a PC fanboy, not ps3.
2. I only play ps3 for Cod games because that's where my cousins play, I've said quite often that I wished they were on 360.
3. People can call me a ps3 fanboy all they want, still doesn't change the fact that Wii won current generation.

So
Nintendo will cease producing and supporting the Wii, long before MS and sony will their consoles, and the 360's attach rate blows the Wii out of the water.

And? 360 or ps3 would still need to sell over 20 mil to beat Wii. Do you honestly believe they will sell over 100 mil? lol

You know, the winner takes it all.

Don't make me link the video.
