Rumored "bad news" incoming about Sony review event, game reviews, or something completely different

Does this apply to new games or most recent releases too? If not, that could be the difference I think. I'm not searching for them on live. My wife is on my damn 360..... Friggin Continuum

You can rate every game on Live, I don't think you have to own it.

Is it still all about Sony and that controlled environment for the reviews? We haven't heard anything about MS doing something similar yet, which would be a very good thing, kinda setting a better example i guess. And they did after all say on Twitter that it doesn't have anything to do with Xbox. Next week should bring a lot more clarity. Is it known if its only for the third party games or first party too?

It includes third parties. The guy MW quoted used EA and Ubisoft as examples. He also spoke of "consoles," plural. Unless he misspoke and this is a one-time, temporary policy in effect for only this one Sony event -- after which everything goes back to normal -- then it sounds like this will affect reviews for games on both consoles.

One reviewer claimed that he "doesn't trust staged s***," and said he needed to install a console himself in order to honestly review it.

Well, if he feels like he needs to install it himself, he can feel free to do that after purchasing his own.

So what's the problem then?

The problem MUST be that he wants to do so in advance of retail launch, so that he can get the hits. There are a couple of issues with this. Retailers won't sell him a console prior to launch. Second, and perhaps more importantly, the day one patch won't be available until launch.

Thus, a console manufacturer or software publisher who wants to control the environment for a review due to the lack of a day one patch is acting reasonable. Reviewers who are not interested in having a controlled environment are unreasonble, and should wait for the retail patch.

I am one of the reviewers being affected by this
i will not give out my name or which review site i work for, because i don't want to risk getting found out
Essentially, what the problem is, is that the big devs for next gen consoles are adopting a new policy (and by "big devs" i mean almost every dev for the new consoles at launch)
Essentially, the policy does two things. First, if we want to make a review, we have to send it to the company of the game being reviewed and get the review accepted before we can publish it without it being taken down. Secondly, it makes it so that we have to sign terms with companies before reviewing their games.
The reason this is only affecting SOME of us, is because we are assigned games each, and some of us have to go out and sign these policies with the publishers before we can do a review. The problem here, is that some publishers (Such as EA and Ubisoft) are making us play their games in their studios, under their supervision, and on their consoles. One dev required that I had to go to the studio and watch one of the developers play the game while i watched and took notes which would then be published as a review (that would have to be accepted by the dev first.)
The reason Sessler is upset, is because he doesn't think this is Morally acceptable. He wants to review games how he likes, but since developers are making us do silly thiungs like watch them play, he's upset and doesn't wanna be a part of this big "scandal" (as Sessler told me) that they are putting on, which would essentially turn "Reviews" into "Advertisements".
you could say he's overreacting and being childish, but as someone who has worked with him before, i can really understand why he's so angry. I'm angry too, you know.

This is not true and bullsh1t

We've tagged this submission as [False Info] and we would've removed this submission if we had seen it earlier. This was taken from a post on 4Chan's /v/ board and there's absolutely no indication that this is true, nor is there any information about it anywhere else.
Jason Schreier (who works at Kotaku) has posted about it on NeoGAF and tweeted it and Arthur Gies (who works at Polygon) has tweeted about it as well, both of them reject this.

Yeah, most of the time. Still, there are times when I like to see the reviews for a game I'm anticipating. Even if it doesn't change my purchasing decision, it's interesting to see how the game turned out, and it makes for good discussion. And sometimes, I use reviews to alert me to a game's shortcomings, so that I can either wait longer to buy or lower my expectations going in.

I'm not that different to you.. I still just don't care that much.

These are $60 products. It's not a $30,000+ car or even a $1,000+ TV or piece of electronics. I can generally guess what games I'll at least get my $60 out of, and it's simply a matter of choosing what I think is best worth my time. And if a game has big red flags I don't think these practices will actually stop that from coming out... there are so many outlets for such information, and if you aren't confident in a game.. don't buy it until it's been out for a week.

I'm not saying it's a good practice.. I'm glad some people in that industry care enough to point it out.. it shouldn't be happening that way.

I just don't see it affecting me that much personally.

The solution is: don't accept the terms.. review your game post-retail using a retail copy. Review the systems post retail with a retail system. And as a consumer.. any review of a product like a videogame not out yet should always be taken with a grain of salt.

They are movies.. and they are often experiences that require post-launch userbases to even test fully.

What? Oh man, now I have to change the title again...

Now I'm totally confused.

The quote made it sound like the publisher would have to approve the content of the review, before it was published. That's absurd, to me. Hopefully there is more to it than that.

"First, if we want to make a review, we have to send it to the company of the game being reviewed and get the review accepted before we can publish it without it being taken down."
that sound like Hostage take over

As far as reviews are concerned....veteran gamers know what to look for in reviews on what they like and dislike...I have seen a review that has gotten a 6 and read what the reviewer said and automatically knew I would like it.

Yeah, that would be more concise. Fwiw, that is the longest title possible on the site. I ran out of spaces, couldn't even put a period.

Hmmm ok...i asked it, because Marcus Beer said on Twitter today that it didn;t have anything to do with Xbox.

No one has actually named Microsoft as a party to this current internet news flap. We don't even have concrete data on what it's all about, just speculation.

I pretty much agree. I can see why these guys are up in arms about this if true. It affects what they do for a living. When that's threatened you get the sort of reaction were seeing. I'm sure there's also people pissed their free games will now be less and they won't be getting free systems, at least in time for pre-launch from Sony, like they have been in the past. These guys make a living being the first to get something out.

Now, I can understand game companies wanting to show the game in their house to make sure the bugs that are in preproduction games is kept to a minimum. I don't agree with them auditing anything. If they start auditing reviews it's a slippery slope.

Yeah, like Seven said, I ignore my post, since it appears to be based on false info.

It makes websites like this vital to the dissemination of the truth as we gamers see it, regardless of whatever the icons of the videogame industry want us to think or believe. Forums have always been a better source of information regarding the quality of games.

if you guys want reviews on consoles then i guess you guys should buy the next edge issue.

I swear, Sessler on Twitter acts like he's squirming under gag order or something. He's just dying to verbally tear someone or some corporation a new one, and he can't and it's killing him!

A little 'release' from a game journalist (posting anonymously):

http://imonamilkcarton.livejournal.com/

Hello everyone,I wanted to do a write up on things that have transpired this weekend!I will be going over some points of interest and give my thoughts! This might OFFENDED SOME PEOPLE AND OTHERS WILL USE IT AS FLAME BAIT!
My intentions are Niether!

Playstations 4s debug kits over heating and giving errors around 50% of the time.
Is it big deal?Is Sony hiding something?Well here my opinions on this matter!

I don't like that Sony is not being completely honest with us and transparent! Are the lying? No I don't think so.These are debug kits. These are new tech. With new tech there are issues! This is not a case of RROD!Simply because the system doesn't die!
You reset the system or cut off to cool!I have been told it is software related and will be patched soon! After the patches hit the wild and imagine the first patch fixes these problems then it's fine.If we continue to see this after the patch,THEN ITS A HUGE PROBLEM FOR SONY!I think this is a wait and see,but don't panic!

Sony inviting Gaming Press To Review and Game test Events!

This happens a lot in gaming world!Publishers will have an event to introduce us with said game and we play and write previews for game! The problem with this is not at this kind of scale before a launch! The issue here is why reviews are being done this way?Why this way before launch?

A few things pop into my mind! You are never supposed to trust anything staged!A lot of a game journalist are only getting to see the games at this event before launch!THIS IS A HUGE F*CKING PROBLEM! HOW COME WE THE MEDIA ARE SUPPOSED TO MAKE SOUND UNBIASED OPINIONS ABOUT SAID PRODUCT?WE WILL HAVE SONY AND PUBLISHERS ALL IN OUR FACES!SO IF WE RUN INTO AN ISSUE THEY WILL SAY OH ITS FIXED FOR FINAL PRODUCT!HOW DO WE KNOW THAT?ARE WE SUPPOSED TO TRUST YOU? THEN THERE IS A FEAR WE WILL SEE A BETTER VERSION OR SPICED UP VERSION COMPARED TO RETAIL! THIS IS NOT COOL AND SONY SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THIS QUESTIONABLE ACT!

Sony doesn't have enough debug unit to send out to gaming media. This could be some what true! The fact the have to send so many to developers and they are trying to manufacture for world wide launch. It is plausible! YET MY PROBLEMS ARE WITH THE FACT ONLY THE BIGGER GAMING SITES OR SONY FRIENDLY SITES ARE GETTING THEM!I THINK SONY IS DOING THIS ON PURPOSE! THEY WANT TO CONTROL THE MEDIA UP TO THE PLAYSTATION 4 LAUNCH! WHY THE F*CK ARE THEY DOING THAT? WHY THE F*CK ARE GAMERS LETTING SONY DO THAT? I GROW UP WITH A SAYING, IF YOU ARE HIDING SOMETHING YOUR KEEPING IT A SECERT, AND IF YOU ARE KEEPING IT A SECERT YOUR DAMN SURE HIDING SOMETHING!

THIS BRINGS ME TO MY OTHER BEEF! SONY TRYING TO CONTROL REVIEWS! GAME JOURNALIST HAVE BEEN TOLD NICLY THAT THEY HAVE TO GET SONYS PERMISSION TO POST TO YOUTUBE OR OTHER VIDEO MEDIA! IF THEY DONT GET SONYS PERMISSION THEN SAID VIDEO WOULD BE REQUESTED TO BE TOOK DOWN! WHAT THE F*CK SONY? TRY TO CONTROL MEDIA MUCH?

THIS AND SONY NOT WANTING JOURNALIST TO REVIEW XBOX ONE COPIES BEFORE PLAYSTATION 4 COPIES! WHEN IN THE HELL DID SONY TAKE OVER THE WORLD IN THE NAZI STYLE OF MEDIA? SONY POUNDED IT CHEST AND SAID WE ARE THE BEST AND MOST POWERFUL CONSOLE OF ALL TIME,AND WE CANT VERIFY THAT?WE CANT CHALLENGE THAT? WE CANT SEE IT FOR OURSELVES? WE HAVE TO SEE IT UNDER YOUR RULE OF THUMB? I CALL BULLSH*T! I THINK SONY IS SCARED OF MICROSOFT! I THINK THEY ARE SCARED IF POSTIVE NEW ABOUT THEIR RIVAL LEAKS OUT AS BEING ON EVEN GROUND THE INTERNET WOULD EXPLODE AND CAUSE A BLACK HOLE THAT WOULD DESTROY GAMING?......

I want to think Milkcarton for allowing me this avenue to blow of steam!I will come back to write more articles for you guys after I calm down!

Thank You for Reading,

iamonamilkcarton is a guy that posted on mrmediaxsite and is full of sh1t ....imo.
