Battlefield 4 running on X1 ... and PS4

The dev kit issue was something more credible than a rumor and was confirmed by several journalists, so I expect that this is a launch issue only. Now the problem is if it can be solved in 5 months with Titanfall.

One thing about this entire resolution thing is the elephant in the room that NO ONE seems to want to address, despite just weeks/months ago EVERYONE was talking about it. There IS a 50% resolution difference the two platforms, so....

Either the developers at DICE are struggled with XBO's tools and/or eSRAM.
or
PS4 is more powerful.

Because months ago, the argument was eSRAM giving developers trouble is a load of FUD since they've been using the same memory setup for 8 years now (technically not 1:1 the same at all but I digress), and if anything XBO would have an advantage because it has more bandwidth and low latency eSRAM/DDR3.

Alternatively, PS4 can't even use all those CUs for rendering so in reality it's 12CU vs 14CU and MS states that the overclock is better than adding 2 extra CUs.

Well I can't speak for displays (I don't use sharpen personally), but apply sharpening after scaling can produce the a very similar end effect (you could argue it's better that way). Another example, scaled from 1600x900 to 2560x1600, and the other is scaled the same then sharpened. I should add in the natively rendered at 2560x1600 image, I might edit that in.

Well sharpening aside, it still looks like even with the res difference, the XOne has clearer and possibly better textures? The game does not (as a whole) appear 50% better on PS4 to me at all. Not sure if this would be chalked up to diminishing returns or what. I mean, that vs pic of that guy's bald head! With an extra 50% of pixels, why so murky on PS4? Maybe better texture ala eSRAM?

..and yes, looks like you did get some added detail out of that post-scaled image. More than I thought was possible. For that, I was wrong. Still, nowhere near the earlier pre-scaled image you posted. (1 more side by side with pre and post? :) ) So how about also doing one on that guy's bald head in the vs pic? No way that the PS4 ver can regain that detail from that washed out PS4 version. I don't see how.

And to be clear, I see this whole thing as a wash, which some said long ago before things got so intense.

i really hope that sharpening isnt hard-coded... and is just from the recording device or devkits only, cause that extra sharpening adds alot of those jaggies and i hate an oversharpened image

but if full game is like how i expect (alot softer) then the graphics difference will be minimal.

Just do what MR SCHULTZ said, but in reverse. Turn the sharpness on your TV all the way down. It's basically the same thing as getting the PS4 version. I have a projector, so if I see jaggies I'll just adjust the focus to blur the image. Problem solved.

...Kidding.

Crying at NeoGAF begins
Xbox One version undoubtable looks better visually. Now they are saying its because of the YouTube and MP will be better on PS4 LMAO.
Seriously, I love reading comments on that site.

Tools are definitely a plausible explanation. Could also be intentional like Ryse's "downgrade" to 900p, but stuff like that would probably indicate extreme comfort with the tools and I doubt a third-party launch game would reach that at this point.

But the differences we saw don't just stop at resolution. Both versions are treated to post-processing anti-aliasing too, seemingly equivalent to the refined, high setting on PC. However, this doesn't tell the whole story. As you may notice in our screengrabs, the actual results on PS4 lack the corresponding level of crystal clarity we'd expect of such a significant resolution boost. This should surely be a home run for Sony's console, but what is likely to be a software-based upscale to 1080p delivers less-than-stellar returns, and for better or worse leaves the Xbox One with an often crisper looking, albeit much more aliased image.

What is curious is the level of "pop" given to the Xbox One's textures, where - bizarrely - artwork often seems to be more detailed than on PlayStation 4. In high contrast scenes, we sometimes see a kind of halo effect around some detail, which may suggest some kind of artificial detail-boosting post-process.

So, is there anyone that likes a softer image that also DEMANDS a higher resolution? Cuz that would really confuse the $hit outa me. "I want my blurryness clear 'nuf wheh I can see um!"

I think its fair to let everyone like what ever version they want to, but it appears from most of the reviews we have seen that there is a clear winner in terms of performance and IQ for the most part. The halo that is appearing around the is clearly from the sharpening, and I think it worthwhile to post the entire quote, for propensity.

Whether this is part of Microsoft's new upscaling tech remains to be seen, but we were reminded of the Medal of Honor effect seen in the Darbee Darblet review. However, what is added to texture detail also seems to be applied to XO's most ugly element - its highly noticeable sub-pixel break-up.

and there conclusion

All in all, we can only give a preliminary outline of how Battlefield 4 will run on next-gen consoles, but there's plenty here that should remain the case for the final release in November. Perhaps the biggest takeaway is that, in this near-finalised state, the PS4 offers a superior experience on several fronts. The resolution is higher at 1600x900, as compared to the tried and tested 1280x720 on Xbox One, suffering as it does for more visible aliasing artefacts. Visually, the PS4 has a marked advantage with ambient occlusion effects too, which simply isn't matched on Microsoft's platform with the build we played.

people seem to post pics from X1 where it doesnt look its best so its only fair

I've watched JackFrags X1 single player and his PS4 Mp, there's no way in hell that PS4MP>X1SP

I knew the dude was either bulls***ting or needed a new prescription for his glasses.

Well, based on my limited viewing of things so far (mostly screen grabs as I have yet to see video), the XBO version looks pretty good in comparison. It actually looks better to me too, and more detailed. Of course, I can't tell the whole story by looking at screens compared to live video from my tv, but it looks like the Xbox version holds up pretty well. And DICE still has stuff to add to it? Pretty good. I'm looking forward to this game.

Yeah, I'm not sure why everyone is attributing upscaling to explain the lack of difference in clarity. In this case people usually bring up anti-aliasing. PS4 must be using a very cheap AA solution or it shouldn't look like that on that resolution.

What a sh*storm! Apparently not everyone is playing the finalized version? Kevin Dent is still swearing he was directly told native 1080p (scroll down a bit for the tweets): https://twitter.com/TheKevinDent

And the 'official' Insider:
Insider: I am really disappointed with the eurogamer comparison videos ... they fail to point out that the x1 build is heavily unoptimized. The build is 10 weeks old lacks kinect and multi player elements. And the biggest fail of all is the 1.8gb patch that will have to be download at launch. The game is shipping with 1080p 60fps v-sync.
I think eurogamer will change this semi review come final hardware and code..

Flynn can you possibly comment on any of this, either way??

imo its obviously rubbish. No reviewers mention it and neither does repi or anyone else. I'd be surprised if the game went from the state its in now, to rendering double the pixels and also having (close to) double the framerate at times.

1080p?? that sounds BS

I know, but....

Battlefield is running at 1080P on X1 and looks awesome.

  1. @TheKevinDent @jonprevans so you're maintaining that BF4 runs at native 1080p on the Xbox One?

  2. Dr Dentenstein ‏@TheKevinDent 2h
@LewieP @jonprevans I am maintaining that I asked the team member presenting and they said "yes". Did ya want to stand up and show "NO"?

@TheKevinDent @Talaviir it's not at native 1080p on either console.

    Dr Dentenstein ‏@TheKevinDent
@aegies @Talaviir We were specifically told it was today at the demo. What build is on your Debug?

    1. Arthur Gies ‏@aegies 8h
@TheKevinDent @Talaviir no idea. this was last week. but it was confirmed to me via DICE through PR that it's 720/900p.

      Dr Dentenstein ‏@TheKevinDent 8h
@aegies @Talaviir this is bizarre, the IR guy made a point of mentioning it. I pinged you a mail with more context.

why the f*** would they allow the footage to go out then (X1 MP looks awful).

I am guessing this is why the X1 review is held back so it's optimized........damage is done now though surely?

You can definitely see that the PS4 version looks a bit more detailed...and that that native res is definitely helping. Isn't by much....but it is there. However I also read that DICE said they could match native resolutions on the XB1 with the PS4 version in time for launch. Who knows....

MP wasnt available at the event.. the IGN footage must have been from a old build.. plus that map looked terrible on PS4 aswell

It was in the thread that got closed. the one specifically about the DF comparison seems like an even split of ppl is utter disbelief that the X1 version looks better to their eye and ppl clinging to the metrics as if that's what matters.

Apparently turning the sharpness all the way up improves textures. :sarcasm
