Sony has purchased Bungie - Their Final Shape

For that asking price, Sony got ripped off.

All that sh!t Jason talking, where is the DOJ now in his tweet?

OMG, now social media is blowing up, saying that Sony now owns the rights to Halo.

"The first thing to say unequivocally is that Bungie will stay an independent, multiplatform studio and publisher. Pete [Parsons, CEO] and I have spoken about many things over recent months, and this was one of the first, and actually easiest and most straightforward, conclusions we reached together. Everybody wants the extremely large Destiny 2 community, whatever platform they're on, to be able to continue to enjoy their Destiny 2 experiences. And that approach will apply to future Bungie releases. That is unequivocal.

"[Bungie] will operate autonomously within the Sony Interactive Entertainment organisation, and they will continue to publish on other platforms."

I think Phil needs to be more open about their acquisitions like this.

I see, but what was the last good Sony movie to come out that Marvel didn't make for them? And TV, that's low margin profit there unless it turns into some kind of cultural phenomenon like Squid Game. There's little chance of that happening with Destiny.

Sony is not going to drop this much cash unless they see value. So I'll leave it up to those who know better. Plus, its not my money. However, Sony has no choice but to say Bungie will remain multiplatform since they are hoping and praying MSFT does the same for all the popular franchises it now owns. But in my opinion, for MSFT this should change nothing and they should go ahead with whatever their plans were for all the IP they acquired.
Sony has all the choice in the world but keeping this type of game multiplatform makes the most financial sense, it's a service based game that continues to bring in money long term and won't require thousands of employees working on it constantly to meet annual releases the way something like COD does. I'm sure Bungie will grow now but it won't be anything like what has to be done to keep COD going, that's a huge on going investment even after the purchase price. Funny thing is Phil Spencer always talks about playing Destiny, I don't think I've ever heard him talk about playing COD.

That price would have seemed right if it was done before Destiny. Now? Sony massively over paid
They paid a high price, higher than the company was valued at but you have it backwards, they didn't own s*** before Destiny so why would they be worth that much then?

In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan says that Destiny 2 and future Bungie games will continue to be published on other platforms, including rival consoles.

Man these acquisitions suck, though I do prefer this over Activision as it's only one developer.

Lol Sony

I feel like in a bubble, Sony over paid for Bungie. Or maybe MS underpaid for Bethesda. Cause now 3.7 billion seems high for Bungie or 7 Billion was too low for Bethesda.
They both paid more than the companies were valued at.

I have my doubts.

The tune will probably change as I can see Sony having Bungie develop an exclusive FPS.
If they do something down the road aside from Destiny? maybe but it all depends, if it's another MMO/service based game it'll probably still be multiplatform. If it's something like Halo with a campaign and then a multiplayer mode I could see something like that being exclusive but right now this just seems more like an investment than trying to have control or add to their exclusive portfolio.

Seriously, this deal looks stupid. You buy a developer who stays multiplatform on top of that keeps independence for that price, rip off.

I’d like to see Bungie do something new outside of Destiny.
They got two other projects in the oven.

right and look at the money that game alone did, Bungie is not at the same level and worth that asking cost. Look how much Zenimax costs as a publisher alone.
Sorry again but Sony got ripped.

Destiny brings in hundreds of millions of dollars a year without having to make annual releases, it's not a bad investment it's just long term. I do wonder if there was a bidding war of some kind going on behind the scenes that got the price up to what it is though, it's hard to believe that was what either side thought Bungie was really worth unless Sony just really wanted them. Personally, I haven't played Destiny 2 since about 3 weeks after launch but I'm just not much of an online gamer so this doesn't do anything for me one way or the other either.

It seems like people want everything to be about console wars though, spend a huge amount of money on a company just to take their games away from other players which dramatically decreases the value of the company you just spent billions on, virtually ensuring you'll never make that money back. There is no one company that can be purchased that will take the majority of players from one platform to the other, the vast majority of PS4 owners didn't buy a COD game, most xbox one players didn't buy Destiny 2 etc.

Yes, Destiny makes money. How much is anyone's guess since they don't release figures. But the fact that Activision walked away says a lot. And its not like Bungies doesn't have expenses like the hundreds of employees they have working on Destiny. For one relevant IP, seems like Sony overpaid.

You do realize that taking Bethesda's games exclusives only means that MS overpaid even more right? The majority of console sales were on PlayStation not xbox, taking that away removes a huge portion of what their potential sales could be, they aren't going to get some mass exodus to come over from PlayStation and join gamepass especially when Bethesda's biggest games come out like once every 6-7 years. Games like Doom Eternal and Wolfenstein sell between 3-6 million when they are on PlayStation, xbox and PC, with the focus on game pass and being exclusive they'll tell us how many people played the games but not the number of people who purchased them because it'll be much lower.
