Sony has purchased Bungie - Their Final Shape

I feel like in a bubble, Sony over paid for Bungie. Or maybe MS underpaid for Bethesda. Cause now 3.7 billion seems high for Bungie or 7 Billion was too low for Bethesda.

MS: We get MLB the Show 2022 Day One on Game Pass!!! WOOT

Sony: Hold my beer.

Honestly, more excited about MLB. I'm sure long term, the investment will be good. Destiny doesn't do anything for me. So, it's all future-based.
Well, true. We don't know what this will bring. But all games are multiplatform and they will have the backing of Sony finances to make their games bigger and better, so hopefully it's a good thing.

I know Sony was interested in making more GAAS games, they have openings across many of their studios here in California, but this just takes the cake.

Good for Bungie

Microsoft is buying companies to make exclusives and Sony is buying them to make multiplats

Confused Confusion GIF

You know, this could be seen as Sony trying to snatch up exclusives, but I doubt that. Bungie has been very vocal about it’s creativity and freedom.

I’m pretty sure this is more of a win for Bungie than it is for Sony, especially with their two other projects they’re working on.

But I do wonder if part of it is in part of Tencents partial stake in Bungie.

Destiny....meh. I'm more interested in seeing what Bungie does beyond Destiny. Hoping that can gather that Halo 1 and Halo 2 story telling magic in some other franchise.

This.

Also the price here seems inflated imho.

Bungie for HALF of what Microsoft spent on Bethesda???

*edit to add below

Today, Bungie begins our journey to become a global multi-media entertainment company.

CREATIVE FREEDOM

Since taking flight in 1991, Bungie has always charted the future with our own star map – a path that is driven by our people and for our community. We are continuing that journey with new worlds in development, and we can’t wait to share them with you.

With SIE, the potential for our universes is unlimited. Our future games will take bold steps into unexplored spaces for Bungie, continue to push the boundaries of what is possible, and will always be built on a foundation of creating meaningful, lifelong friendships and memories.

We remain in charge of our destiny. We will continue to independently publish and creatively develop our games. We will continue to drive one, unified Bungie community. Our games will continue to be where our community is, wherever they choose to play.

With SIE's support, the most immediate change you will see is an acceleration in hiring talent across the entire studio to support our ambitious vision. If this speaks to you, and you want to help us put a dent in the universe, we are hiring across all disciplines for Destiny 2 and for all new worlds beyond.

I'll say the same thing as before, better than Tencent buying up these companies. I feel much better with MS and Sony growing. Just look at what was done to the ending of Fight Club in China. Instead of the normal ending, a message comes on screen "The police stopped the explosion and everyone was arrested". We want as little of that in gaming as possible.

They will probably try to use this as leverage to keep COD multiplat.

Another interesting and somewhat unrelated take I heard was that Sega recently jettisoned their arcade division, making them much more attractive for acquisition. I wonder if they are also in Sony's crosshairs?

Funny you bring up Fight Club because the author of the book said the China remix of the original Fincher ending aligned with the book. Its pretty ironic that China got called out for censorship and yet Hollywood totally changed the ending from the book.

I don't see how this deal helps Sony. They get one franchise with Destiny which is popular but not billions of dollars popular. Ohh well, I've been waiting to see what Bungie can do outside Destiny which rests on their Halo roots, the one attempt at a new IP failed miserably so their track record doesn't inspire confidence. This deal feels more like a way for Sony to keep something out of MSFT's hands more than it shoring up Sony in any meaningful way. Still, in the short term this deal should help stop the slide of Sony's stock value.

"The motivation behind Sony's acquisition of Bungie is to help boost their own abilities to make live-service, multiplatform games. equally, Sony unlocks the potential to Bungie to strengthen its technical capabilities and the prospect of taking its games to movies/TV"

Hmmm, so Sony is more interested in Bungie's Live Service game. It feels like over paying for that, all they needed to do was employ the same headshrinkers who consulted with developers in their study on how best to manipulate the human psyche for profit in gaming.

Well, movies/TV too. Though I have no idea what kind of money is generated (profit) from that.

I got notifications that their stock was going up before the announcement, wonder if word had leaked…but this purchase was in the works for a while.

I see, but what was the last good Sony movie to come out that Marvel didn't make for them? And TV, that's low margin profit there unless it turns into some kind of cultural phenomenon like Squid Game. There's little chance of that happening with Destiny.

Sony is not going to drop this much cash unless they see value. So I'll leave it up to those who know better. Plus, its not my money. However, Sony has no choice but to say Bungie will remain multiplatform since they are hoping and praying MSFT does the same for all the popular franchises it now owns. But in my opinion, for MSFT this should change nothing and they should go ahead with whatever their plans were for all the IP they acquired.

As someone who doesn't live in China, I don't want to be under Chinese censorship.

People here tend to look down on Destiny, but that game is huge. Unlike COD, Destiny is on the rise. Bungie has more Ips on the way too, but obviously a long way off.

I think Destiny makes a ton of money in microtransactions. Not COD money, but Sony didn't pay that kind of money either. Everything in their store is $8+ and is all profit.
