2015 Game of the Year Discussion Thread

latest

I hope I have time to finish Rise of the Tomb Raider before the end of the year. And since I haven't, I can't include that in my vote. Taking Rise out of the equation, I am going to have to go with Until Dawn. I will probably get lambasted for picking a QTE game, but no game this year engrossed me story wise the way that game did. And yes, I have all the big "insert ambiguous term here" games.
You'll love Rise. I think its right up your alley, KV.

I retract my thoughts on Witcher 3 being GOTY. I'll be diving into The Phantom Pain soon.

Honestly, this sort of shows how intellectually dishonest many reviewers were in regards to MGS 5. If a game gets tens across the board, why didn't it get more GoTY awards? The way it was raved about doesn't jive, imo. Just shows how it's score had to do with more than the game itself.

You might be surprised to learn that MGS 5 only scored 1 point higher on metacritic than The Witcher 3

Even if a reviewer gave MGS a higher score than Witcher and ended up declaring Witcher to be the best game that isn't necessarily dishonest.

Based on the buzz I heard for MGS 5, I do find that surprising. Not to say that The Witcher didn't get lots of praise as well. At least there seemed to be an aknowledgement of TW3 flaws. MGS 5 seem almost fanatic to me. It wasn't until several weeks later that I started seeing criticism from fans in comment sections.

I meant more in the sense that they were dishonest to themselves, not that they were to their readership. It could be that I myself just never got into MGS (aside from MGS1), and I have tried, but It always felt like it scored higher than a game of another franchise might with the same issues. It seemed almost like gamer-cred group think to me. I never played MGS 5 (outside of the Prequel demo), but I'm just making an observation on Hype vs Outcome.

TW3 may have been close on Metacritc, but it was still lower and beat out MGS 5 by a pretty wide margin. 24 to 8, where MGS only beat out it's nearest competitor by 2.

TW3 has same score as Bloodborne and its clobbering it by even more. I don't think that means much certainly not without looking at each and every reviewer and seeing how consistent they were.

I do think its interesting how the reader picks are more in line with the critics on TW3 and not MGS5 and Fallout 4. I take from this that TW3 is underrated more so than MGS5 is overrated.

I don't think TW3 was underrated, personally. I always felt I could agree with the positive assessments as well as see how one could dislike certain aspects.

I've always thought MGS was overrated, though. They did seem to address many of my hang ups in the demo that related to control. It's impossible to know for sure without playing 5, but it looks like the love affair wore off a bit.

This sort of thing common place. You remember GTA 4 getting lots of 10s and silly comments about the story being Oscar worthy. COD always scores high despite having numerous big issues and a terrible campaign.

Reviews nowadays are far more subjective than objective, and are pretty much worthless because of it.

Rise of tomb raider has about same metascore as Fallout 4, but didn't even made the list.

MGS 5 being a swansong for Kojima could factor in the higher score.

Depends on what you define as "scores high". Hasn't really done that in awhile. Also it used to have great campaigns.

Nowadays? You mean always right?

Nope. I mean what it means, as in contrast to the past. Sure, reviews have always had some subjectivity but they were mostly made up of objective observations and findings. You rarely get that nowadays.

I got Bloodborne winning GOTY for sure now that i'm bleeding blue again. Last week i would have said Fallout 4.

My guess is that Fallout 4 will take home the most GotY awards. Game media typically go more bananas for the big Bethesda RPGs. New MGS will probably take plenty of awards as well. I could also see CoD, Halo, Tomb Raider, and Bloodborne taking a few as well. Especially for more specific rewards.

Normally, but this year, Witcher 3 happened to be released, & become an instant benchmark for questing, stroy & interesting character design.

Fallout 4 feel, evolutionally, very small evolution, & I do not mean just the visuals. The environment is a mix bag, sometimes it can look good, espeially outdoor, but often, especially indoor, it looks pretty last gen, but the characters are downright low details & texture, even key NPCs.

There are some nice quests, but for every cool one, you have 2-3 dull ones, like go to library & return book, & clear out these places because...just clear out will you!

But I do think Fallout 4 leveling system is far better than WItcher 3, ehich I think is worst part of Witcher 3.

I've yet to play either. It's been a bad year for me playing the big games of 2015. Awards are typically click bait materials for sites and magazines to attract more eyes to their content. They'll either go against the grain to stand-out, or stick to what they believe will be a crowd pleaser and Fallout 4/MGS5 might be this years biggest crowd pleaser as far as giving out awards go.

I liked Life Is Strange a lot.

The Witcher 3 was pretty good too.

Going with Tomb Raider: Rise of the Tomb Raider now that I have addicted to it like crack as my game of the year.

It will win GOTY next year when it comes out on the better console. This year belongs to Bloodborne, TW3, or Fallout 4. ;)

Keep it on the down low, but..

There's a bobble head at that library if you fully explore it.

In looking more forward to Mass Effect than QB. However I'm lookin more forward to QB than the other two in his post.
I have lost faith in ME since ME3 debacle. And it's an EA game.

It will be a great game, but I do not see it competing with those mentioned.
I don't see it competing in sales, no. But a GOTY contender based on gameplay, graphics and innovation, I suspect it will be up on top.
