2017 Best Graphics

Horizon has nothing better on Destiny 2 (for PC) other than painted in shadows for the grass.

You guys are going to have to do better than that. While opinions are subjective, you have to at least give justification. Destiny 2's worlds, environments, and tech clearly beat out HZD. Hellblade is again an incredible looking game and destroys HZD with lighting and character detail.

Stop when Horizon wins you will be wrong

LOL! "When Horizon wins"? What does that mean? My thread isn't about guessing what web page will vote on Best Graphics of 2017 but more so what do YOU think is best graphics and WHY? Just spouting off "Horizon" with no basis as to why it tops the other games is just being a fanboy of the PS4 in my book.

This thread is about criticizing and policing your opinion.
Horizon WILL win Graphics/Visuals of the year awards in most places and Hellblade will NOT even be a contender in MOST places awards. Say I am wrong and bookmark this post and we will see.

It comes down to opinion period.

It comes down to explainable opinion period.

Corrected your sentence above. :)

If I wanted a poll, I would have made one. HZD will win because of popularity. In fact, almost every year gaming websites choose a Sony exclusive from either ND, Sony Santa Monica, or GG. It never fails. Most of those sites don't know what they are looking at and/or don't take the time to view the multiplatform PC titles. Or are extremely biased towards the PS4. When was the last time a multiplat won Best Graphics when a Sony exclusive from either of those companies came out in the same year?

What I'm tired of seeing is PS4 fans that know they lost to a graphics comparison with a PC on a multiplatform game and just stick to glorying over their exclusive title simply because it's an exclusive. If you can't give good technical reasons why HZD should win best graphics compared to PC multiplats like Hellblade and Destiny 2 (running at true 4k with all the bells and whistles that the PS4 can't even support), then we have a problem.

We are entering the realm of artistic vision vs technical accomplishment.

One game does not need to be technically superior in order to LOOK subjectively better, and vice versa.

Let me police my opinion Hellblade wins best visuals!? Lol yeah right

Horizon ZD with its HDR and fake 4K looks much better and will actually win awards for its visuals.
Spinning the because its popular card won't get you anywhere.
Pointing out that you can run it in true 4k don't work either.... We are comparing visuals not resolutions.

Horizon honestly wow-ed me the most. Now if you take graphics to be more than just how pretty it is what you see then Horizon is no question the best. But if you extend it further to include immersiveness of what you are seeing with your eyes then Resident Evil did a marvelous job of putting me into an alternate reality when played VR style. I realize that is a stretch but I really want this landmark title to get its just due when awards drop. I have contentions that it may be my GotY.

I see that 4K textures are making A Creed Origins look freakin' stellar. I can't wait to see them on Tuesday.

Too bad.. it's not an exclusive console title, so it will be disregarded come "Best Graphics of 2017" voting.

Yeah, it'll only be a Sony exclusive like Horizon or Destiny 2. (To be fair, I haven't played or really watched any of Horizon so I'm not saying it's not worthy.)

Well when Union is picking a Sony exclusive its probably time to stop saying its about biases. This place is not exactly the most biased site in favor of PS4.

What is best graphics? Is it something trying to replicate the real world or art direction? Is it visual fidelity and technical achievement? Or just the opinion of what someone has played vs what the have seen?

Are graphics a hammer and we’re putting it to the test of how well it hammers in nails? Does said hammer give you splinters, or how much leverage does it require to remove nails...,I lost where I’m going with this, bleh :p

Good day to you ppl.

Too bad.. it's not an exclusive console title, so it will be disregarded come "Best Graphics of 2017" voting.

What if it’s multi platform like Breath of the Wild or Nier?

Whys that?

Because all media outlets are inherently biased toward Sony, and they won't acknowledge anything that isn't Sony exclusive. I thought you knew this.

Taking everything into account, I don't know how it couldn't be Horizon ZD. It's open world with incredible art direction, lighting, texture work, etc. Plus it's a new franchise so the visuals feel "new".

There are several issues with H:ZD which take big points away from it being the top graphics player in the industry.

I loaded up the game again just to verify that I wasn't being biased myself and I took note of a lot of things:

1) The lighting (while procedural and works well at night) is horribly "incorrect" during the day time. You can notice this by looking at the rocks and atmosphere in the distance. The rocks allow too much light to pass over causing it to look blown out. And there is just too much lack of "color" on objects even though it has an artificial sky. Hellblade has THE best lighting of any game to date and Destiny 2 uses a very good color palette to offer wide variation of colored materials.

2) The character in-game doesn't even come close to the fidelity of Senua in Hellblade. Just take a camera and look at her face up close. She doesn't even have a good skin shader and her face lacks several details.

3) The overall look to Horizon looking at an entire frame doesn't have good occlusion like Destiny 2 (in 3D occlusion mode) or any of the other games utilizing a more advanced occlusion. This is a BIG deal in any game on how to simulate indirect light bounces and how objects are shadowed when close to other objects.

Overall, I feel that Destiny 2 (on PC) has much better color scheme, extremely good light volume shafts, excellent occlusion on ALL objects, and enormous texture detail (there is literally layers of imperfection textures). The characters have more detail in Hellblade and Hellblade's lighting model (with Enlighten as it's GI renderer) is untouched. The fire FX are pretty much the best looking animated fire textures I've seen. HZD's fire camp doesn't even come close. Senua's hair shader is also top notch and shows a tremendous amount of detail for braids compared to Aloy.

If people actually paid attention to these kinds of things, then it really wouldn't be much of an argument.

I will say that HZD has the best foliage I've seen in a game simply because they got around the overbright shading found in most other games (Witcher 3 is horrible at this) by painting in the shadowing near the root of the blade grass. It's a nice touch! The animation is also superb of course.

I think that is a more worthwhile discussion than trying to guess who will win it.

Honestly, for me- and I'm picking it because I'm playing it now, not that it came out in 2017- I'm going with MAD Max. It's so atypically beautiful.

Avalanche did such an amazing job of making a desert wasteland look amazing and full of variety. It feels much more real than the desert areas in Horizon ZD. The light renderer is up there with the likes of Driveclub, it's got an impressive physical presence owning to it's physics system, and some awesome, ever-present use of particle systems.

Only real downers are the skin shaders and that it's a bit blurry (one the XOne). I love how everything feels weighty and tangible because of the physics. Everything touches each other. It's so rare in games...

Horizon's animation also makes it look so good in motion with everything so animated in that most beautiful open world game.

I'd have to say Forza 7, Cuphead and Zero Dawn. I don't own Zero Dawn but the videos look amazing.

Probably throw Gears 4 in there too. My mouth hit the floor a few times.
