2024 will bring more layoffs and closures than 2023

I've seen some people on twitter saying things I agree with, like the answer isn't to just go to AA games that don't take advantage of hardware, if that's the case they need to stop releasing hardware. They need to figure something out no doubt about that but they need to come up with ways to do things more efficiently, to be able to move quicker when something needs to change and to stop chasing trends that will be dead in 3-5 years when your game is completed.

I guess we’re not getting any more new Star Wars games :( hopefully one last Jedi game

In a note to staff, EA CEO Andrew Wilson said the company is also "moving away from development of future licensed IP that we do not believe will be successful in our changing industry."

GamesIndustry.biz understands that one such title was cancelled as part of this plan, with the teams working on it redeployed to other projects.

Outside of sports or racing, EA's major external licenses in recent years have included Disney properties like Star Wars and Marvel, which the company has tapped for upcoming games based on Black Panther and Iron Man. (An EA representative confirmed both Black Panther and Iron Man remain in development.)

Wilson explained the rationale for the shift away from licensed IP in his note, saying, "This greater focus allows us to drive creativity, accelerate innovation, and double down on our biggest opportunities — including our owned IP, sports, and massive online communities — to deliver the entertainment players want today and tomorrow."

On the job cuts, Wilson said the publisher "deeply considered every option to try and limit impacts to our teams."

He added that informing people of those impacts is a process that should be "largely completed by early next quarter."

Lets make games base on Heroes killed off in MCU. .....

At no point when MCU were on a high, that someone said, lets promote comics base off our popular MCU superheroes. How about making comic link to the universe, side stories between movies. to expand on, like what happened between infiniate war & end game........along these line.

I know it sound harsh, & I am going to get backlash, but the game/comic industry are run like Kindergarten, at least in the west.

DC is actually gonna do that in their new phase under James Gunn and his creative/business partner

IF EA is paying those absurd licensing fees that Sony had to pay for Spiderman, the games has to sell like hot cakes to just break even. At this point, I don't even blame EA for trying to get out of the licensed character IP business. The only ones to make money seems to be the license issuer.

Wonder what they pay for licensing sports?

Well I imagine the FIFA and NFL ones were the most expensive one which is why they had to drop one. Allegedly FIFA was licensing the FIFA name to EA for 150 million EVERY year and wanted to double it to 300 million a year.

The NFL one is also unknown but based on their five-year extension from 2021 to 2026 which is worth $1.5 billion in total, so that works out to roughly another 300 million a year.

You have a point, but it was not licening issue that Spider-man 2 was 3x the budget. They must knew they are not selling 3x more. There is no budget control.

This is oversimplification & mostly untrue.

Successful in any business is profit. Reason people are laid off is due to not meeting profit target.

Spider-man 2 blew the budget. The people inc charge of controling the budget need to be held accountable.

We have our partner demand 11cents more per part (thats like 5% more or so) & we we having meetings making a big fuss & whether the extra cost is justified.....

Every cost is budget, calculated, & tracked. Thats why we are celebrating our 150 years or so.

It could’ve been an investment, so they can then turn around and use that engine, world and assets for the remaining Spider-Man games, maybe including Wolverine and that new X-men game. Sadly it won’t be used on their multiplayer Spider-Man spiderverse game, as it was canceled, but it was leaked that all the remaining Spider-Man games will have multiplayer….but with all the cutbacks at Sony, we may never see a multiplayer game from insomniac. The only current ip that may still get a mp game/spin-off is horizon.

I got a lot of heat for saying People don't want to play non batman in a batman game, referring to Akham Knights.

They have 2 batman games with you playing side characters. How did they fared?

With exception of Venom, I doubt most people are interested to play any non spider-man char....I don't see how a spider-man MP game will work.....

I 100% agree the budget was out of control but the licensing also includes royalties on every game sold. According to the leak it was something like 20% royalties on every copy sold. Even with it selling a bunch of copies, retailers and Marvel probably ate a good portion of the profit.

Maybe something like destiny or crystal dynamics the avengers? Only in this case you get to pick a Spider-Man from any different universe or time line…maybe you can accessories them like you can in Spider-Man 2? But if it was a good game, it could’ve been a franchise. But I guess Bungie didn’t like where it was going.

But I guess it could’ve been like cod, its got multiple story’s, and there’s no crossover, or you don’t play as the same person in each game or through the whole campaign, especially in the game that follows it. Each one I’d it’s own thing.

I dono, things can be different, it’s part of creativity.

Gotham knights was a good attempt to break away from being a Batman game, I never played it, and I didn’t really keep up with it after release, maybe I posted or commented on it but honestly I forgot it was a thing until now.

Wasn’t there other Batman games, like a multiplayer one on the 360 or early one days?

I don't look at that game and see where they spent 3 times the money either to be honest, it looks better but not that much better.
