I raided some random, unimportant to the story, area in Norway that had no specific stories tied to it last night that had a better battle than I've even seen in the campaign so far. So many enemies, 3 different yellow boss fights, loot galore. I never would have known it was there without exploring. Really cool. I sadly think it's going to be a while before I get to England, I'm wanting to 100% Norway!
You can return to Norway via the map after you go to England. Some areas in Norway are not suppose to be done until later(high-level requirement).

I like the drinking and rap battles, I didn't take the time to figure out the dice game and rushed through it.

What I like the most is how the devs encourage exploration by hiding these cool abilities throughout the world in the form of books of knowledge. That will keep me exploring because there's a cool payoff.
I haven't felt this much desire to explore in a while. I find myself going to a high point, finding something that looks interesting and go there.

This reminds me much more of Origins than Odessy, which is a good thing to me.

I find the combat a bit sloppy, but more deliberate than Odessy and Origins. Stealthing is more fun too. I put stealth on normal and melee on hard. Having a grand old time and I love the setting.

I also like th a's t I'm not picking up 300 bits of gear all the time. Makes me more invested in my stuff. Glad I bought it, and that surprised me, lol...

The world events are like side quests, but far worse. They are boring, & often confusing what you need to do, or where the person you are supose to follow went or want to do. There also are NO in-game prop or info most of the time unlike main quests & traditional side quests.

They are not like traditional side quests and that's the entire point of them. If they are worse or not is entirely subjective.

Yeah I really love what they did with the gear system. I didn't upgrade the Raven Clan gear set for ages because I thought I'd be replacing it within an hour of playing. 30 hours in and i'm still using it.

Got the harpoon and kick ability... Still think the combat is much less refined than Odyssey.... It feels like a prototype for what Odyssey is.
There's nothing even remotely as tactical and deliberate as Odysseys big battles.

Honestly... It feels like this game was developed before Odyssey, everything feels less thought out.

Still, game is great no doubt, but after playing (and loving) every AC game (except liberation and those 2d ones) and their remasters I think I'm knowledgeable enough see what there's too be critical about.

Much like yourself I've played all those as well and so far I think this one is a huge improvement Odyssey (which I thought was best one to date). With the way they have redesigned the side missions into mysteries the entire environment feels way more natural. The new gear system is better and the combat feels tighter. The difference between heavy, light and two handed weapons is way more pronounced which I love. The only thing so far I've found that is a step backward is the way you can't see gear stats before you buy them. I don't know what the f*** that's about. I'm hoping its not intended to be that way and it will be fixed.

After a couple hours, I prefer Odyssey in almost every way. The setting, the characters, the combat, the story... just all worked better in Odyssey for me.

Still I’m really liking this game and hoping after some time and upgrades the combat is more satisfying and the story more engaging.

I was a big fan of Odyssey, it was GOTY material for me, but I don't feel this steps backwards at all outside of a few annoying bugs (mostly just teammates standing in doorways shouting at you to get inside).

The one thing I don't like is the loot. I kind of miss the random loot drops that might give you a different weapon to try.

This game also starts a little slow. Instead of "tutorials" they just make the early area really drawn out. They should almost read your account and see if you've played the other games and give you a faster path to the "real" game.

By the way, anyone know what is the point of recruitment. I recruited a few people but nt sure how to use them. Do they join you in raid or what?

I agree in regards to missions and gear, the combat I strongly disagree though.... But the taste is like the arse, so it's okay.

I'm still in Norway trying to find all that I can. I had been using the Ax you get from the start for a while now since I really like to pair it with the shield. But I recently found a dagger & hammer and thought instead of trying them out individually I'll equip the hammer in my right hand and dagger in the off hand. Ohhh boy, the dagger has this quick stabby move while the hammer just pounds everything into the ground, lol. In my opinion the fact that you can equip two different weapon types to mix and match as you please makes the combat in Valhalla much more fun and deeper than what you get in Odyssey.

Yeah, I had stayed with ax and shield all through Norway and even early into Engerland, but I was talking with my son yesterday morning and showing him his the game worked and was like, normally I'd use a dagger or even two but I haven't upgraded it yet and oh my f*** that speed! So now I'm dagger and offhand axe, until I get my second dagger.

Yeah I believe you can assign them to the Longship so they come raiding with you.

I came across a funny side quest, I believe it was one of those world event quests. I like how you randomly stumble upon these mini-missions in the world. Anyway, the quest I'm referring to was some dude looking for glory but was kind of a wimp. So Eivor agrees to help and bring him something he can handle. At first I thought he needed me to kill something nearby and bring back its head as a trophy for him to claim as his own. It took me a while to figure out that I needed to kite an animal back to him to slay. So, I lured a Polar Bear back and even got its health down to a sliver and this dude (think his name was Erlend) still couldn't kill it and was slaughtered by the Bear I brought for him. Perhaps he would have done better against a Wolf, lol.

A polar bear....??!

It was either a Bear or Wolf. And since I had already slayed all the Wolves nearby the Bear was the next choice. In thinking about it now I probably could have fast traveled away and back and the Wolves most likely would have respawned. I wonder if he had survived if he would have given me something useful. Ohh well, he dead now.

He wouldn't have, as I had the same result bringing him a nearly dead wolf! Haha. I seriously almost killed it myself, as he was doing nothing. I laughed when I got two experience points at the end for letting a wild animal kill him.

I'll need to find this at some point and gate a rabbit his way.

Now that I know about this too I kind of regret dunking Mr. s***-arrows. Getting him torn apart by wildlife would have been awesome.

Do people enjoy hunting/fishing in game? Why do they keep putting these in game!

One of the problem I have with most open world games is the amount of boring S tasks you need to do & traveling you need to clock before something fun happened.

I started using the dagger you guys were talking about. I added in a boost to backstab power, then went down the Raven tree to get the backstab perk, and the perk that sends enemies into slowmo if you time a dodge just right. It's an awesome combo. Dodge some fool's attack, suddenly they're in slow motion and you can run around behind the guy and stab him in the back while he's still slowly recovering from his attack animation. Feels like I'm playing a Souls/Borne game.

The side quest structure in this game is pretty revolutionary imo.
If a Zelda game had this it would've been heralded as true Nintendo innovation, I mean, they apparently did something amazing by having fire cook apples and burn down trees in Botw according to games media lol

But seriously, it's pretty amazing, I find myself actually completing them instead of just pick them up and finish them 20h later not even remembering how I got them like in every other open world game.
Witcher tried to force you to finish them by limiting how high level you could be to get xp, but that was a s***ty system imo.

I agree, and like you wonder why these Ubi devs aren't getting the credit they deserve for Valhalla. I think it's because the Assassin's Creed franchise has gone on for so long and some feel its not as newsworthy given that Valhalla is just the next entry in a long running series. But it ignores the fantastic additions and refinement Valhalla showcases.

At first I thought my excitement came from the Viking presentation. And while that's true I can't ignore the great side mission structure, they feel memorable in this game. And the way the player gets these cool new abilities which encourage exploration. I'd be happy to explore just for a new cool looking piece of armor or weapon but throw in the chance of acquiring a new ability to make my character even more badass will drive me with even more enthusiasm for exploration.
