the weapons are slow to come by. I’m 60 hours in and I used the Raven armor for the first 50 hours. Upgrading it all to Epic level kept it in good shape. I’m now using the Brigand armour which gives great melee bonuses as I’m all about the melee. I just finished upgrading that to Epic and it’s awesome with the dual wielding daggers.

The Raven armour isn't as good as the Twitch rewards one which are mythical tier. I also found mythical shield and spear so just been using those for a while now and upgrading them.

Yeah the economy in the game is just gross, especially since you can buy packs of materials with real money.

I've been able to get by with what I pick up so far, but there's some upgrades I could really use, like expanding my health storage.
You can just use your silver to buy more and leather. It's only 1 silver for one ore/leather.

there are plenty of good weapon builds. So far I’ve tried
Two Handed Sword
Two Handed Axe dual wield
Two Handed Hammer dual wield (crazy skull crushing going on with this one)
Dual wield Daggers (currently using this one it’s sooo fast!)
Mace and Axe
Spear two handed
Spear and shield
Spear and Heavy Shield (proper tanking building)

I haven’t even tried any melee bow link builds yet and any full bow builds.
There is a lot of meaningful difference in each build. Just got my first hammer, so I'm dual wielding with the hand axe. The spear has great range too. I usually change up my weapons for powerful enemies.

Progression for me (and much prefer over loot) is chasing abilities and skills. I love throwing dropped weapons and catching arrows to shoot back. I'm after the roll over rune attacks skill. Much fun, and Eivor is a badass. He has a cool voice and a viking beard!

I enjoy the game a ton, definitely GOTY material for me.

I think the biggest flaw is the lack of progression. The last couple games, I felt like I was building towards something. With this game, I'm basically using the same weapons and armor that I got from the Twitch rewards.

Changing up weapons would help the monotony, but mostly there's only 1-2 good options so far.
Yes, there's a few steps back here from Odyssey.
The loot; imo Odyssey didn't overdo it as some say, I think it's great to be able to have a truly unique look and feel of your character, that's missing here.
The combat; much worse, there's no real flow when there's more than 3 enemies at the same time as with Odyssey... Here you just spam abilities, throw enemies weapons (which is awesome though) and cast projectiles back at enemies, it feels spammy imo.
The rpg elements; basically gone except some choices for killing or not killing main story characters (or let them into Valhalla or not), Odyssey really shined here.

Except this, everything else is better imo, it feels much less epic than Odyssey, but I've learned to appreciate quieter mood of viking age britain.

disagree. The amount of loot dropped in Odyssey was ridiculous. You were swapping out stuff every five minutes. You’d spend nearly as much time sorting what you had as you plying the game.
Combat is super tight and much more responsive. The different move sets with the different weapons and weapons combos are a huge improvement from Odyssey.
Plus there are multiple endings to the game based on choices you make while playing - the same as in Odyssey so I don’t know why you think that’s different.

Did you like the game?

I’ve been really confused by skill up and a few others saying they regret playing the game for 30-40 hours. How do you play a game you don’t like for that long??
I did not say I didn't like the game. I am just wondering how much I already to get out of the game, considering it's a very busy December in games.

I'm 80+ hours in, best gaming experience I've had this year (except maybe animal crossing).
Thanks, but that wasn't my question though. Does the game get better as you process?

I would say the loot gets better and by extension the game gets better. Gameplay really opens up once you get a few armor sets under your belt. If your playstyle is to be a sniper with your bow there's a set for that. If you want to spec heavily into assassinations there's a set for that. If melee is your thing there's a set for that. It would be cool if we had the option to set loadouts to quickly switch between different armor/weps.

But if you're looking for a deep RPG where you have to make real hard choices about your build this is not the game for you. Its heavy on action/exploration but you will get all the skills if you play long enough. Its nowhere near like The Witcher 3 where you had limited points to fill out your build. But not every game needs to be as deep as TW3. The formula here works for Valhalla and I'm having a lot of fun with it. You just need to know that its more action over RPG.

I'm about almost 30 hours in. Now I'm just trying to go through the main storyline, I'm at Lumden now (beautiful btw). I got tired of trying to raid every possible location and get every single treasure/world event. I feel like I've experienced most of what it has to offer already other than the main story.

Opinions I guess.

I'm right though.

Idk, there's tons of great side quests and mysteries... If you've only done story mission I guess you'll be missing out, but 30h in you should know if you want to continue or not I think.

Anyone else have issues with the drop rate for hunting items? It's like only 1 out of every 10 deer with antlers I take down actually give me antlers. Same applies for most other animals. i typically just get my arrow back and leather. Hopefully they fix that, it's not like it's super fun or engrossing to try to hunt in this game. I'd rather have a 100% chance for the items to drop, it's not like the rewards at the hunter's hut are that incredible.
Same. The other day when I was playing I could not get antlers to drop. Needed them to complete a quest.

Ubisoft has its hooks in me. Between this and Immortals, Ubi has put out some really fun games in the span of 2 months. And I know everyone s***s on them for their games but personally I know I'm going to get my money's worth with the base game, let alone the expansions.

Back on topic. I've been using a 2 handed melee build with a flail in the main hand and a hammer in the other. The flail starts slow but once it gets going its devastating.

The game is fun, no doubt about that. Ubisoft just needs to fix the bugs that are infesting this game. This coming Tuesday I am going to have to send the game back to the kiddy table and experience the world of Cyberpunk 2077. :bang:

just picked up a second flail last night. I try a dual wielding flail build. The helicopter of death!!!

Just got Excalibur and wow what a great weapon. It's not overpowered by any means but it does something cool which I won't post here.

Also I want to point out that there is a skill you can open up that when you dodge or parry at the right time it slews down time momentarily which allows you to get a few extra shots in on the enemy.

Where did you find that? Is it part of the story or a Mystery?

I'm not sure if I like the combat more or less than the last game. I think it is a mixed bag. I like how this game really makes you need to use different aspects of combat. Normally I would just ignore the bow, but this game encourages you to try it more.

It does feel button mashy though. In Odyssey, if you got detected and got swarmed by guards, it was an oh **** moment. You often needed to just flee if you got into too big a fight. In this game, I just mash the light attack with my spear and shield and usually am fine.

Not sure if the difficulty scaling is less aggressive or something. Odyssey always seemed challenging, while this game I always feel overleveled. I don't do a ton of side stuff but always seem to be way overpowered by the time I get to the story. (I see gold bars on the map and plunderers gotta plunder)

It's a different worse combat system.

Most modern hack & slash games can be overcome with wait for enemies to make an attack, dodge/block, counter. Repeat. Sadly.

You can up the difficulty for different things. Melee and stealth can be different. I hated the feel of combat in Odyssey. it felt messier. Valhalla feels more deliberate, weighty, and engaging to me. I also like how different each weapon or combination of weapons can be.

I actually struggle with the stealth compared to previous games. In past games, I could at least soften up a base by taking a bunch of people out, but now it seems I get 1-2 stealth kills and now the base is on alert. Not sure if I built out my character wrong or if the stealth is just harder.

In Odyssey you could start a huge fight and then go hide in the grass and they'd completely forget about you :)
