Honestly I don’t get why some of these companies are struggling to make great shooters now days. Is it just the greed, chasing trends, online games being to complexed… don’t get it.

They all seem to see Activision/COD making tons of money (over a billion for just a quarter). They want this money, but don't want to invest in a good game to get one.

So I think they kind of take a "home run swing" at some generic game that will have mass appeal, and end up making something nobody likes. Again too, they don't have the studios and resources, so whatever they make ends up feeling empty. The whole live service thing falls flat in comparison too.

For as much as COD is frustrating, there's more stuff to do in that game.

And yet COD has multiple dev studios with hundreds of devs working on it and they cant’t get their s*** together either.

Greed and trends are a part of it. Not listening to your fans is the biggest issue.

COD only caters to the lowest denominator because it makes them money. Even after losing 60 million players they persists in ignoring its fanbase.

BF just has zero identity after a decade of chasing trends nobody likes and ignoring its community.

Halo screwed itself by chasing trends. Trends very few seem to like.

Oddly enough, Ubisoft seemed to have listened to the COD community and are trying to deliver a F2P Shooter for them. Still chasing a trend but maybe xDefiant will find the right balance.

I don't agree with the "since bfv" arguement. Really I feel like BF had eras where they dumbed the franchise down.

1942, BF:V, Battlefield 2, BF2142, IMO this was the peak of BF franchise, the game did have a learning curve with commanders, detailed and elaborate commrose, more structure, less of a run and gun game a lot more meticulous then the BF games of today.

BC1, BC2, 1943, dumbed down, downsized, and simplified for the console masses and controller.

BF3, BF4, hardkine, Same as above but to a lesser degree, they brought a bit more of the core of the game back but certainly not all of it in BF3 and 4. Hardline was ehhh, but still retains more core then the games of today.

bf1, bfv, 2042

these are basically all in the same category to me, very dumbed down with not many classes, CoD style gameplay with battlefield moments, not a ton of tactical play in these IMO, they leaned towards more of a GaaS model in these with seasons and such.

basically, bring back BF2 style gameplay and I'll be excited, but I think that's never gonna happen. This is also not me saying that all of these games are bad, I've had fun with most of them.
Ah, you have more experience than me with the series. I started at the tail end of 1942, so I never played any of the others prior to that.

But point taken. I hope they aren’t too far gone to bring it back to the basics and make a great game, but we’ll see.

1942 was the first one.

If you do a deep dive in the "BF community", there isn't universal agreement in what a game should be. There's fans running around who loved BF1 and consider it the best game of the series. A lot of these people never played anything before that. (heck, many weren't alive).

Bf V was kind of hilarious because that game itself went through crazy changes to the time to kill. There was a time the TTK was so broken that you'd get 19/100 damage when shooting a rifle at someone's torso. 6 shots to kill from a rifle!

I go back to the 1942 beta, playing Wake Island hundreds of times over. I've played every game since, except there was a weird console only version mixed in somewhere. There's still an overall formula that you can find in BF:

-A mix of infantry and vehicle combat. Vehicles need to play a major role, but not be dominant (a tough balance, especially with modern military based games). This is where 1942 shined, the planes were good, but not dominant like a modern day jet, so balancing was easier.

Infantry combat still needs a place. A player not in a vehicle needs to still be useful. There's games dedicated to vehicle only combat. BF needs that mix of both, that's what makes it great. I've played since the beginning and never been a pilot.

-Squad based teamwork. If you play COD and you suck at aiming, you suck at the game. It is just a twitch based shooter and nothing else. BF has a lot more ways to play. Pilots, engineers, medics, people who aren't great at FPS can still be effective. BF is a "thinking" shooter. This is why the COD vs BF arguments were always silly, they are always different games. I've played entire rounds of BF games and barely fired a weapon. I love COD too, but it is entirely something different.

-Epic moments - this is harder to define. Early games obviously had no destruction, but I think you have to call it a tenet of the series now. You need those moments of a tank destroying a building. You need those crazy moments that show up on Youtube that simply don't happen in many other games.

-Live service - I don't think you can ignore that modern gamers expect some of this. Publishers make good games and get people hooked and buying microtransactions. The key is starting with a game that keeps people coming back. This isn't an "us vs them" debate. They make money by making a game that pulls people in. If the base game is bad, everyone loses. Game publishers want a ton of monthly active users, that's how they make money. The only way to do that is to start with a good game.

The devs should know.

But since they don't, it is simple. 1943 and BF2 >>>>Everything else. BF2 with destruction should be their aim. End of. Add back the Anti-Tank class too.

I honestly can't remember the differences between BF 2 and 4 at this point (or 3, or Bad Company). I had a blast playing every one of those games.

Maps, classes, infantry v armour balance. etc.

I remember. BF3, 4, BC just weren't in the same league.

Just rumors and speculation, but the rumors of a year 2 might have been wrong. Again, this is just more speculation, but EA removed 2042 from their live service catalog for 2024. I don't like rumors, but there's a possibility that season 5 is it. It makes a lot of sense, as it is a given that they are working on the next game and will be "all in".

I am not excited for the next game. All this talk about the next Bf "in a new way" has me thinking they are still beating a dead horse. I hope I am wrong though.

Yeah honestly I wouldn't read much into that. They missed on 2042, but at least they have reacted to feedback. We're still years away anyway, but that just sounded like trying to sugarcoat the fact to investors that any new game is years and years away.

Why won't they do a Bad Company 3?
We had it. It was called BF3, BF4, BF1, BF5, BF 2042.

Told you a million times. BC was a filler title for hardware incapable of doing a full BF game. That is no longer the case. The BC series no longer serves a purpose. And if they slap its name on a new BF game it will be no different than a mainline BF game.

FWIW, the trusted data miners are finding no reference to any future season/content. It isn't official, but I wouldn't worry about unlocking too many more cosmetics, as this might be it. Granted, we were sure season 5 would never happen and here it is.

It just seems possible that this is the last bit of content for the game. If they want to sell season 5 stuff, they'd at least tease the future, if there was any to tease.

Their dev update mentions "future content and experiences" but does not say what that is. They did not mention a new season at all.

I have to guess we're only going to see tiny updates moving forward. They won't officially say that support is ending, but I'm betting most of the team is on to the new game.

Patch is out. But it's broken the game for many, including me. My game won't update and I can't play. Not seeing anything positive about Season 5 for those that managed to get their game updated and working. Read that Sundance's gadgets were removed and all she has is a wingsuit lol.

Is that what's going on? On PC it just tells me I'm out of disk space, but I have plenty. Trying to reinstall now. My Xbox copy seemed to work ok.

Now it says it needs an update but won't. Weird, I didn't see anything about it on Reddit.

In the EA App, I had to go into: Help>App Recovery> to get it to work. Repairing the install didn't work, but this did.

It's working now. Not sure how I feel about the new patch. New map is small and is 64 player only. Its my least favorite map, thats for sure. Can't tell what's changed apart from vehicle upgrades and additional grenade options.

Supposedly character movement was updated to be less floaty. I can't tell the difference.
