Child of Light, April 30th

Playing on XB1. I'm on hard difficulty.

I had to get use to the combat/casting along with the firefly.

I'm very, very happy to see that the combat looks to be drawing heavily from the Grandia 2 playbook. Best RPG combat I've ever played.

I got about two hours in on this last night. Its really great. The combat manages to be quite challenging, and strategic without being too easy, or too hard. It seems to be a nice balance. Im a sucker for turn based RPG's, as that's what I grew up with, and I like the back and forth of it. The story, world, and characters have loads of charm to them, and the melancholy tone of the game, contributed to by the awesome soundtrack really adds great atmosphere, and a sense of sadness to the proceedings. This game is a steal at only $15, and anyone with an even passing interest in RPGs should do themselves a favor and play it.

Its funny. With all the resolution wars and blathering back and forth with people these days, I can look at a game like Child of Light and say, that in its own way, its one of the best looking things out there, and its not really even trying that hard to be.

That is due to its magical art style.

Price a bit high for me. I will relook at it when it gets cheaper.

Definitely worth the money. I don't know how many hours I've played it but it has definitely been well over 15 and I'm not done yet. Lots to explore and secret areas to find and things to looks for. I'm playing on normal, turn based style games aren't my thing but that said I've probably only lost a few battles along the way with the bigger bosses but still very addicted to this game. My daughter has come over to visit a couple of times while I've been playing and I've offered to shut the game off so we could chat and she wanted me to keep playing so she could watch and is planning on getting it herself.

This game is too cheap at $15 for its quality. I find it really funny how $15 is too much for some people, even where a fantastic game is concerned. Its one thing if you don't have the money. That's perfectly understandable. But if you're just being stingy because you feel a digital only game is somehow beneath you, then you probably need to get out of the video game hobby. This game makes a ton of current games look shoddy in comparison. Its not some half assed experience.

What has that to do with digital? I will get it on steam anyway, or 360 (maybe), so it will be digital anyhow.

Beside, in my defence, I will need to pay 15€, which is like $20 american dollars.

Ok Ok, I will look into this game again, after I am done with Dishonored. (it was on ice for a long time).

Just lost my first fight. The boss snakes in the bottom of the well. They kept paralysing me. Bastards.

I found the only way to beat every boss is to eliminate the subordinates first to avoid the boss's counter slow/haste cast from ripping you apart.

I just use *Skill / all to attack everything at once to see which creatures were more vulnerable to magic or physical attacks first then act accordingly.

So I have had this sitting on my PS4 since day one, but have not had time to play it yet. Question for those well into it, does Hard (soon to be Expert) difficulty really bring out the strategy elements like I have been hearing?

The harder difficulties definitely do bring out the strategy elements better. And it's completely doable with zero grinding if you know how to approach the battles. I have literally just been skipping battles completely vs grinding, and I've been tackling it just fine once I figure out what to do. And how you use the glowing blue companion in battles is very, very vital.

Just finished the game this afternoon. Fantastic game from start to finish. Though as RPGs go, it was pretty easy. I finished the entire game without losing a single battle. Definitely play on Hard if you're any kind of RPG veteran.

Can you change the difficulty setting in the middle of the game? I'd like to play on Hard but also like to have the option to drop back to Normal if I want to. Does that game give you that option, or would you have to start a whole new game?

Took me multiple tries as well. Just beat it. I just had to do a little bit of "grinding" in the dungeon leading up to the fight. After a few levels I was good to go.

I don't mind grinding at all though. It's actually something I look forward to in JRPGs. Gives me more experience with the combat.

While I never lost a single fight through the entire game, I think that fight might have been the one that took me the longest. Even including the final bosses.

Wow, not one? Were you playing on hard?

All of the bosses are identical. Once you have beaten one, you've beaten them all. And the cheap marionette animation of the characters buring battle still bothers me. I wish they were hand-drawn animations. It is an okay game, but nothing glamorous.

Yes you can.

Yup. I was playing on hard and never lost a battle. :D

Though I did come close a few times, especially on a couple of the later boss battles. It comes mostly down to doing a good job of managing enemy turns. If you can cancel their attacks or get your guard up before they take their turn, then the game isn't too difficult.

Too bad there's no trophy/achievement for doing so. :(

You are more skilled than I. I haven't died too much, but I occasionally mess up a fight to the point where I do end up dying. I sometimes just get flustered with how much is going on on that bar I think.

Just started, I'm on chapter 3. I like it a lot so far. The art, the music, the themes of light and dark, the narration, even the rhyming work for me (it started off feeling a little odd, but now I like it). It all seems to work together so nicely.

I'm attached to Aurora already. I loved the part where the old woman said "you are a child of light." I'm not sure why that really landed with me, but it did. These things are kind of unpredictable. :) I also loved it when she got the power to fly. I guess I'd forgotten that bit, from all the media, and I was starting to think it was just a 2-D platformer/jumper.

I still need to finish mine as well. I have 3 bosses left, so the game is pretty close to being done. The problem is I'm at the third to last boss right now and I have like no potions or anything left. I don't want to switch to easy difficulty setting but I have no idea how I'm going to beat this guy.

I'm enjoying the game. I'm surprised at how long it is.

I downshifted to normal difficulty, after playing most of the game on hard, because I was getting tired of the turn-based fighting mechanics. I've never liked turn-based fighting much. It's okay here and there, but a lot of it gets tedious to me. Turning the difficulty down enables me to focus on the other parts of the game without worrying about all that stuff (oculi, buffs, resistances, party members, strategery, etc.).

The parts of the game I enjoy the most are the other stuff -- the art, the music, the environments, the story, the characters and their interactions. The rhyming dialog feels forced sometimes, but it does have its charms and adds to the fairy tale feeling. I also like how Aurora animates when she's falling through the air -- her little arms and legs waving around make me smile.

I'm beginning Chapter 10, which I think is the last one. I'll probably finish up tonight or tomorrow. Good game.
