Destiny "most successful new video game franchise launch ever"

It's set day one digital sales records on consoles.

That doesn't say much in itself, I mean, how many digital pre-order consoles had before this lol. But I see this as a start of a new trend. Say, Forza Horizon 2 will have some good sales digitally. Heck, FIFA 15 will go crazy if it goes digital. COD as well. It's time to say bye bye to Gamestop once and for all.

Enjoy!

Everyone expected initial sales to be big — but few thought they’d be this big. Worldwide retail and first-party orders for the multiplayer shooter game Destinyyesterday topped $500M, Activision Blizzard says today. That tops the previous record for a new franchise set in May by Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs. If you add sequels, both still trail last fall’s Call Of Duty: Ghosts, which had more than $1B in Day 1 sales, and Grand Theft Auto V, which had more than $800 million.

There is a difference though... GTA V, CoD: Ghosts and even Watch Dogs are actually talking about first day SALES.. Destiny is touting the amount of Destiny worth that they shipped to retailers and packed in those bundles.

That is some excellent wordplay. I wonder what the actual sell-through is.

True and yeah if it was an incredible number Activision would be sure to tell.

My guess is its done around 5M.

$500 million in 24 hours for a new IP is great. that's over twice as much as Halo 4 made in it's first 24 hours. Of course that was only on one platform but it's also one of the biggest selling gaming franchises around. Destiny is likely to see the majority of it's sales on new gen hardware just as watch dogs did only this game will likely have more legs.

I really wish people would stop calling this a new IP, this freaking game is HALO-D with some mass effect, borderlands and a bit of cod tossed in. Dont get me wrong, I'm having fun with the game, but it's no new IP. Had any company but bungie been behind this game it would never had reached the sales it did.

You wish people would stop stating facts? lol

Average game with crazy awesome marketing, welcome to 2014. COD did it for years, and bungie knew they could.

Is it average cause I see more people on my friends lists PS4/XBO playing it then Ive seen for any other game this gen and I see quite few above average reviews/impressions.

Personally I think it's a very good (not amazing) game that is a nice starting point for what can be a huge series. Yes it has some flaws as all games do, if I were reviewing it I'd give it an 8. One thing I do hope that happens in future versions is space combat being added (that was the best part of Halo Reach) and more attention paid to little graphical details like if it's raining on the planet the ground should be wet lol. Hopefully the sequel is a new gen only game and they can focus on PS4/X1 and leave the 360/ps3 in the past.

This is the internet, people only focus on the negative ;)

well its a AAA game, huge marketing campaign and theres probably one of the biggest droughts in gaming right now, I mean what else would your friends be playing right now? Where is the competition?

With the lukewarm reviews for this I wonder if sales will fall flat over the next few months? I know the first month is usually make or break for games and this one definitely "made" it but yeah, just wondering if sales/player count will get really low after 30 days. Hell, outside of Call of Duty MP and maybe Battlefield, seems like all games player count goes in the toilet after 30 days...even if they are really good. This being an MMOFPS puts it in a unique situation compared to some other games but I see the results being the same unless the Expansion packs get rave reviews. Most folks I talk to don't really like the crucible MP so I don't think that is going to be a big draw moving forward.

I think its because they done a FRESHER/BETTER job with this franchise then the last and people wanna hold it down.

If I see you on Master Chief collection Day one, I'm totally going to team kill yer ass.

Sticky grenade to the nuts. "Xbox, record that s***"

It's been getting really good reviews so far. Not to mention, the people that have bought the game have all been enjoying it, as a majority from what we see on the forums around the web. I would guess sales will continue to do excellent.

Is a 76 on metacritic "really good reviews"?

I see a 79 right now:

But yes, it is. Especially when we take into account the Bungie forums. Majority of us there are really enjoying it and have had very favorable reviews. Eurogamer, pretty much gave it an ACE, as 8/10's are hard to come by. Most of the people on this very forum that bought the game are giving it favorable reviews. Anytime I have been on a fireteam, everyone I have been playing with has been saying the game is really good.

So yeah.
