Destiny "most successful new video game franchise launch ever"

So the final word is that they shipped $500million worth of product.

Actual sell-through is confirmed to be $325million.

Still gotta see those units sold though, it's weird that they're using dollar amounts as opposed to copies sold.

I also wonder whether they're counting the revenue generated from bundles as well in their figures.

So is that around 4-5M? Very good for a new IP but reviews might hurt it's second week.

That's what I'm wondering. It's still not clear if they outsold Watch_Dogs's 4million units in the first week. I figured they would have announced it if that was the case, since they were so gungho about the $500 million number.

Notice, that $500,000,000 is sold to retail. That doesn't include digital sales I assume? I think digital sales for all games are huge this gen. Anyone guessing digital sales of all games will end up being 50% of the game sales by at least the end of the gen?

Stock of Activision Blizzard also went down since the lukewarm reviews were published.

I see a 79 right now:

But yes, it is. Especially when we take into account the Bungie forums. Majority of us there are really enjoying it and have had very favorable reviews. Eurogamer, pretty much gave it an ACE, as 8/10's are hard to come by. Most of the people on this very forum that bought the game are giving it favorable reviews. Anytime I have been on a fireteam, everyone I have been playing with has been saying the game is really good.

So yeah.

I think you're the new forum crazy person.

For half a billion dollars, it better f***ing be! Jeez, that is so much money!

Well I'd guess some of that money also went to all the servers and equipment that the game uses and that stuff can be used for other activation games too.

Why do people keep using that 500 million dollars quote? Hasn't that number proven to be false at this point?

It is no where near $500 million. I guess people can't read anymore.

Let me get this straight.

$500 million to make
$500 million sold to retailers
$325 million sold through to consumers
Lukewarm reviews dropped the stock price of activation blizzard.

?

I don't think anybody that's actually played it and is being honest can say it's "bad". Deeply flawed, yes but not a bad game at all. The PS4 MC is 76 and the X1 is 79. Since they are ostensibly the same game, I think we can average it out as a 78. This is well below what Bungie is used to getting for MC scores. I'd give it an 8/10 so far which is pretty spot on. The game is "fun" at it's core and technically very well done. It just lacks a certain "soul" and story pay off along with being very repetitive......fun but repetitive.

AFAIK, the published numbers so far are $325 Million sell through and $500 million to retailers. The math states this is around 5.4 million copies sold to consumers. That is pretty damn good especially for a new IP. I think it will be interesting to see the spread across the 4 platforms (PS4 obviously leading the way there). I do think Bungie has a lot to prove moving forward though and if the content drops aren't interesting, then they are going to really have to step it up for Destiny 2 to get me interested (i.e. Space travel, space flight/dogfighting, more planets, more mission variety....more, more, more :)). I always thought that since I could buy ships that I would actually be flying them in some form or fashion.....but fingers crossed for Destiny 2 on that one :).

I don't believe it cost them 500 million to make.

I think the "investment" was $500 million across this game and development of future content/games. If this single game cost $500 million to make, then the VG industry is really f*cked.

Egad! That actually sounds plausible!

Yet we're still going to be subject to people calling this a 500 million dollar, ten year game.

And now this...Destiny is just firing on all cylinders. Game is f***ing unstoppable.

Destiny attracts 5 million unique viewers on Twitch in first week
Destiny drew in 5 million unique viewers and 20 million total views on Twitch last week, making it the "biggest console game launch of the year" on the streaming service, Activision said in a press release. Viewers watched 240 million minutes of Destiny gameplay during the week.

It's difficult to directly compare these numbers to other console game launches on Twitch, since those stats aren't readily available. "We can't provide those numbers since it is up to our partners to determine what they want to publicize about their channel's engagement," a Twitch spokesperson told Joystiq.

However, there are Twitch engagement numbers for the Xbox One and PS4: Titanfall was the game most often broadcast on Twitch via Xbox One in its first month, with 10 million minutes of streaming. Players broadcast 23 million minutes of gameplay in Xbox One's first month with Twitch, and on launch day, Xbox One players accounted for 30 percent of all Twitch streams. In its first month, PS4 players accounted for 10 percent of all Twitch streams, with 20 million minutes of live broadcasting.

Hide your reviews from the public, launch in a window with no competition, create an obscene amount of hype and you naturally get stuff like this.

Let's see if people still care about Destiny in a month and then again in January. I'll be impressed if this game has legs. I'm very skeptical right now.

Hide reviews? Do tell. In fact we are still waiting for you to tell us when Bungie said they don't plan to support the game for 10 years.

Where do you come up with this stuff?

Jackie Fhan is that you?:-->:

I love the idea that they hid reviews but let everyone and their mother play it 2 months before it released.

Hmmmm...when did I say Bungie went on record to suggest they wouldn't support Destiny for 10 years? Find that for me and we can begin a conversation!

Yeah...can't hide a games flaws in something called a beta can you? I'm sure Bungies excuse of not being able to turn the servers on for this massively multiplayer game was legit. I mean, how on earth are you supposed to properly review a game that has a three player campaign and a ten player PvP mode.

Can anyone tell me the player count in the original Socom on the PS2?

Sheeeeeeep.

Do YOU actually think they are going to support THIS game they just released for 10 years? Pretty sure that was a reference to a 10 year "franchise" and not a single game. I imagine we'll see Destiny 2 in Fall of 2016/2017 and so on. If I misunderstood you, I apologize.

No that is not what I am saying. Someone said that Bungie said that they do not plan to support the game for 10 years. We just want to know where and when they said that.

Short memory, you have.

They have no plans to support this game for ten years.

I don't know because they didn't. They were pretty obvious.

Go read a review or two of Destiny. Many of the major criticisms of the game (ie repetition, lack of planets, story, loot issues, social issues etc..) were either excused because it was a beta or did not present themselves in the first three hours of the game.

In fact, if you listen to the latest bombcast, both Jeff and Brad expressed that they had hope that there was more to the game than the beta.

Now why on earth would they say something like that?
Short memory, you have.
Short memory, you have.

Just as I suspected.

The English language is one of the most precise languages on the planet and allows for a high level of articulation.

You don't see the difference between "Bungie won't support..." and "Bungie said they won't support..."

It's obvious to most of us that Bungie won't support Destiny 1 for ten years because...

1) A game needs to have a large enough player base for the publisher/developer to support it for any length of time. The jury is still out on Destiny.

2) Bungie/Activision still has at least two more sequels to make. Kind of hard to throw worthwhile support behind the first in a series when major sequels come two or three years later.

3)It's probable that the PS4 and XBone aren'teven viable in six years let alone ten years.

Let's use our head at least sometimes.

Story, repetition, and the social issues were all obvious. The planet total was known and wasn't any kind of secret.

Well they fooled me, Brad Shoemaker, Jeff Gerstman, and just about everyone else in the industry who were still excited for Destiny even after the beta so I guess Bungie and Activision counted on what actually happened sooooo...

Well if they said it must be true. The beta took you to the moon and had very little story. Did people just think they hadn't added it yet? Or they hadn't added social interaction yet either?
