Drive Club 30 fps vs. Forza 60 fps discussions

I disagree. What could have been an Interesting discussion about the pros and cons of 30 vs 60 ( and to be fair, it did filter through a bit) it turned into more console war BS. I don't think the core discussion is irrelevant.

I agree. Some people are fine with 30fps while others aren't. I don't think it is silly at all. Arguing 900p vs 1080p is silly.

To be fair, if Horizon 2 comes out and only runs at 30fps I won't buy it.

Some posters (kvally) want to keep running in circles trolling with "30 > 60" and "800p lololol" and reaction gifs trying to derail the thread instead of any kind of technical discussion.

Nope. Try again. Just correcting misinformation.

Next gen is here. Not even 7 months into this generation and these consoles are struggling to hit above last gen numbers.

Both consoles are mediocre in power with one already struggling at launch.

Yeah I'd argue they are both struggling, one is just worse, so Id image Xb1 is probably 720p/30fps?

I remember when the rumors of Durango and Orbis first started trickling in, the rumor was that both were going to take the Wii route. Modest upgrade. In a way I think that's what happened.

Saw the uncompressed videos. I'm having a difficult time seeing why the game isn't 60fps. The graphics aren't anything near cutting edge. The jaggies on the power lines is fine, those always seem to be difficult in every racer. The jaggies around the cars is pretty bad considering the game is running at 30fps. They still have four months to optimize but thus far the game has been heavily downgraded from the shots we've seen in the past and pretty much confirms everything we've seen up to this point has been replay/photo mode. The below two photos aren't even on the same planet. The second frame below is the only one where the environment is still. The third is the game in motion. I tried to find one where the sun really shines on the car but I couldn't find any in the two videos. I couldn't find a way to download the Canadian video.

I agree with Plainview. The game is kind of a mess visually. At least inconsistent. Some things look great.

But the game looks fun. It reminds me of Rally Sport Challenge in certain scenes.

The 30 fps has affected the visuals imo. It's a little chunky. They use blur to make it look smoother and to give a sense of speed. It's well done. Not over done like NFS.

All in all. It looks like a launch window racer. Not a bad thing.

I'm going to try the free trail and likely buy the whole package.

Quite suprised at that downgrade considering it's only 30fps. More importantly though I still think it looks great and looks like it handles like PGR which I loved.

I think the game is being brought down by two things visually.

1. AA or lack thereof.
2. Motion blur is of a poor quality.

If those things were to be addressed, the game would really shine.

If you look at the footage frame by frame you can see just how poor the motion blur is. The ground looks especially bad. It doesn't get much better when in motion as you pointed out.

It seems like the video is still under some sort of compression because it doesn't look crisp at all. It'll look a lot better when you capture screenshots on the PS4 because it's not a screen capture of a video but a screen capture of the actual source.

How come your blacks look crushed, Plainview?

Here's one I captured.

I think mine has enough contrast on my monitor. My monitor is calibrated weekly. You capture looks washed out on my screen.

"I see people on Gaf trying to count the no. trees in the Canadian Direct Feed http://bit.ly/1k7Bt6X Good luck - there are over 1 million!"

Over 1 million trees in the Forests of Canada video.

It IS relevant because this is a technical thread, not a "just play the games, man!!" thread. Your post is typical coming into a tech thread and whining that people are talking about tech.

Some posters (kvally) want to keep running in circles trolling with "30 > 60" and "800p lololol" and reaction gifs trying to derail the thread instead of any kind of technical discussion.

It's hard to talk about developers targeting 30 or 60 fps and whether framerate/visual tradeoffs are worth it when that kind of trolling is allowed.

WTF? I have zero problems with Tech talk. I understand more of it than the average bear( I do work in 3d graphics on the art side) Trade-off between 30 and 60fps do not have to devolve into "My console could do it better" arguments. That detracts from discussing the actual merits/demerits of each approach. This particular topic can be had with two games on the same system. I do agree that it's hardly one sided here too, so no need to be so defensive. I've never doubted the PS4 is more powerful, but it's till a moot point.

I guess, to be fair, I have maybe given it too much credit considering the title of the thread. Still, The consoles are close enough that the compromises required would likely be very similar. I doubt there is much more to say about it, really.

I think that Canada vid looks fantastic, but those trees are probably billboard trees ;)

Of course, it doesn't matter because you can't tell, obviously, but the way some people are... As long as the trackside trees aren't billboards I don't know why someone would care. Looks very nice, and I think the sense of speed is good too.

The lighting quality is also very nice with some nice shaders as well, but some vids aren't terribly mind-blowing.

You guys know much trees in game with a far view like these uses multiple Level of detail meshes, base on distance? What I am saying is tress are hardly the way to gauge.

In my opinion, the visual of Drive club is ok. People need to understand, Turn 10 is a far bigger studio with more resources, so its a bit unfair (in a sense) to the developers of DC.

I think if they pushed it, it can go even further, especially with a lower fps.

In the end, all things considered, Forza is a little more impressive (60fps, decent looking, launch title on a weaker machine). Also, the reality is PS4 is the more powerful machine, doesn't change whether if in isolation a game looks better on X1.

A granny drive a Porsche 911, losing to Vettel (F1 champion) driving a Golf GTi, doesn't make the Porsche a weaker car than GTI.

Developers do play a part, which is why Ryse looks better than most games.

Bottom lines are:
PS4 is a little more powerful than X1, no matter how you want to argue (bring in Ryse, 30fps on Dc etc), currently. Just let it go people.
Developers play a significant part visually, as much as hardware, or even more. (see my Vettel vs granny hypothetical arguement).

Last I read, they aren't.

I love it...totally cracks me up.

"but look how many non essential, trivial rendered trees we have!!!!"

Wait, is that why you couldn't hit 60FPS is because you are rendering a million trees with real time shadows? Is that what they are saying?

In any racing game, the scenery, at least the far off scenery is moot. You should be watching the track and cars, not driving miss daisy around the track. Why anyone cares if the trees are 2d, flat 3d, or fully and accurately rendered is beyond me...

I know it seems like I am dumping on the game, but they aren't focusing on what MAKES a racing game. Physics, AI, cars, etc... all they seem to be drumming up is day/night cycles and other visual cues. Not how the game feels.

I am looking forward to playing this, but this BS pissing match with Forza has to stop LOL It is silly

That Canada video gives me a much better impression than the other two vids. I need to see more.

I watched it on my phone though. I'll watch it on my TV later.

Oh lord the stupid s*** people compare to make them feel better about the console they chose. Both consoles are weak but can produce nice looking games. Neither is going to beat the other because they are so similar.
