How is Sam Grand Maester when he isn't even a Maester? In fact why is he not back at the Night's Watch?

He was sent by Jon to be one. And the fact he tried warning all these maesters and was ignored probably gave him clout among other things working in his favour.

He sent him to be one but he wasn't there very long. Nice of the maesters to be totally cool with him having children.

Had been there for several months. Remember each episode has always taken place over weeks.

The ending also fits with A Time For Wolves which was the last books original title

To think if Jorah had followed his duty rather than dick in S1 she would have been poisoned

I've been turned off by this show ever since the writers were not able to borrow the biting dialogue and political intrigue from GRRM's books. I honestly would have been fine with this entire plotline if only we had better dialogue, and more explanation, without plot holes.

The book(s) GRRM is writing will will in all of those blanks left by the show, and will redeem the GoT brand. And then it will all get torn down again when HBO makes the prequel/spin-offs.

I wouldn't be too bothered if the spin offs end up being bad. Its just additional material so no big deal.

The real question is when we are years down the road and George is no longer around and someone at HBO has the idea to bring this back for a sequel. Does it happen?

Yep. Instead of dialog, we got quick plot turns without any real drama.

I'm not 100% sure GRRM even has an ending at this point. I know when/if the books come out I won't be reading them until someone tells me that it is worth it.

My gut tells me he has no idea how to finish the story. I hope I'm wrong. I feel like he led us down this path with no payoff.

He told them each characters fate years ago

He was, but all did was empty s*** pans and cook slop. Cured Jorah. Then stole some books and left.

I don't think we know that. I don't think he would have been that clear on the fate of a lot of these characters.

Not to mention that you can't just paste on endings for characters who are taking very different paths

The writers confirmed it years ago (2013)when they said he revealed 3 big moments coming up. One was Shireen being burned by Melisandre.

2 was Hold the door and 3 was Dany at the end.

He confirmed Jon's parentage in their first meeting with him.

The 7th book title was changed but it's long been hinted that the Starks would end up on top. And they have still been having regular meetings with him despite him taking a smaller role in recent years.
Bran ever refers to himself as Bran the broken in clash of kings

He had the story planned yonks ago. Characters have been moved elsewhere but the characters that are alive/dead in the show will be by the end of the books.

That's what we heard - but what about the ending does/did he have in mind?

That's just it, what if he gave them nothing useful because he didn't know himself?

Things we know:
-He added some pretty big characters and major differences in the books
-The quality of the books started dropping off drastically
-It is clear he's thrashing around writing this book - he still has yet to announce a date

It isn't like the shows just outpaced him, he's clearly been struggling and writing other things.

What if he doesn't have an ending any better than this? The show runners did a pretty good job following the books, making needed changes where they made sense. Now suddenly there's this shift?

I don't doubt they met with him, but what if he gave them little of use because he doesn't know?

I think the overall fate of the characters is fine...well, except Bran. I just think some characters were poorly developed which makes their twist ridiculous.

I also think the White Walkers were totally pointless.

I know the major concept is his end. I'm saying you can't assume he told them the end of every character or that they 100% followed what he said. Especially since Cersei wasn't killed by "the volunqar" and The Prince that was Promised just straight up got dropped and the Lord of Light "f***ed off".

Either way the situation is ridiculous. You can't just paste on an ending. He would have needed to be much much more heavily involved in the shows writing for it to work.

My overall view of the season is that it was clearly rushed. HBO allowed the showrunners to do this so they can do Star Wars apparently, but the show itself could have used an extra season or two, or at least more episodes to flesh out the character development and battles. Especially for the Battle of Winterfell.

They apparently wanted to do just 7 seasons for a long time so I guess we should be glad we got an extra 3 episodes out of them. In fairness 70-73 episodes probably was possible but they would have needed to speed things up way sooner to pull it off.

i don't think not having books is the real issue. Yes, you will lose a little something, but alot of the shows biggest issues are due to rushing it.

I wouldn't be surprised if GRRM finished the story in a completely different?
