Rather than pretend the Gold is to do with GWG despite the fact it's been called Xbox Live Gold since 2010(originally just Xbox Live) and GWG didn't start till August 2013
One way? It's the only way and was an added feature long after live started and could be removed at any time. People don't buy Gold for it they buy it to play online.
You only have to look at what they offer now to know MS don't care for it.

One day(my guess is within the next year or 2) GWG will be officially dead. GP will be well over 30+ M subscribers
The issue is 30 million is not alot. Not sure they can perceptually lower the value of the Xbox Live sub at that milestone.
