Hello mates.

So I created this thread to get an idea about just what we all believe next generation consoles should be. Or in another way of putting it: How do we as fans of video games, define our PERSONAL next generation experience and what it would include (or exclude as it were with some of you) in your personal opinion. Does the upcoming generation of hardware and software suit your tastes?, or are there personal ingredients still needed to make the Playstation 4 and Xbox One, your favorite console (s) of all time?

Of course, there will be those who think that what we have on tap for the Playstation 4 and Xbox One are suffice enough (I'm one of them) but there are those who would like to see something more to define next gen gaming for them personally. Share your thoughts.

I'd like to request the mods to endure a bit of tickling in this thread for the sake of debate and discussion please.

Um, I don't know about all that, but I typically just define generations of console by around what time they release. Xbox One, PS4, and Wii U all being one generation.

I still think it would be a good idea to add some type of rumble device that fits on your wrists like a watch with vibration functionality when playing motion controlled games. That would be awesome!

I'm just a consumer and take whatever I'm given as the next platform for console gaming. The only say I have is whether I choose to buy what's offered or to pass (and I'm buying). So next gen for me is whatever XBox One and PS4 provides.

Come to think of it: I'd still like to see a Kindle-esque app on the X1 too, so I can read my novels and turn the page with motion gestures. I could also SNAP my preferred music as well, as I read. Dave Mathews and Dean Koontz would go well with my coffee in the morning on my wide screen. WOOT!

*sigh* You know what, I'm not even gonna say it this time. I'll just accept it. Clearly every multi-console thread needs to be made in the xbox one section.

Of course there is the literal definition of a new set, birth, or generation of consoles.

When I think of next generation, it comes down to this: A definite, immediate bump in graphical fidelity. After we say that, then it comes down to new experiences that were previously not available in the past generation. Whether it be the cameras, new OSs, or even as small as rumble triggers or a touch pad. It's all things that were not available to us in the previous gen.

Here's a question; do you think we would still have a next generation if there wasnt the increase in graphical fidelity? What if it were only physics and A.I.? What if it were just cameras, controllers, dedicated servers, cloud etc to go along with physics and A.I.?

I suppose. However I don't think that's going to ever happen until we reach a max at graphical capabilities :)

All things considered, I believe we are at the point where games look more like Cgi which is what many have hoped for, for some time now. I hope we see a new Ip further into next gen that just ups the ante as far as expectations are concerned. But I'd also really like to see the game that takes motion controls over the top next gen. Or at least see devs utilize Kinect features consistently to where voice and motion gestures are just expected in games.

With the Kinect included with the Xbox One, I'd say we have a better chance of this happening now more than ever...

Next gen requirements:

Expected stuff
- Better specs leading to better visuals, audio, physics etc... Every new console improves on this, but.....

Some kind of extra coolness setting it apart from old gens
- 16-bit had controllers with more buttons, emergence of CD stuff (Sega and T-16)
- 32-bit/64-bit had CDs (PS1/Saturn) bringing huge content, CD sound. Could also play music CDs. Memory cards so no more battery back up carts costing $10 more. N64 had funky analog controller
- 128-bit brought DVDs so even more content, DVD movies, analog controls, online starting out (better on some consoles than others)
- Current gen. PS4 had BR allowing BR movies. Consoles strived for the whole media entertainment hub, online standard (gaming, market place, social), motion controls
- Next gen. Video uploading for those that don't want to use external video capture hubs expanding social stuff, X1 has Kinect 2 which is a big leap and the whole cable/multi app snapping on X1 too

Oh hell yes..

Oculus looks cool, but for the life of me I can't see how many would prefer to wear that HUGE device on their head but complain about lil ol' Kinect. Oculus will make you THE MOST unattractive gamer in the world!
Agreed. Any of those VR helmets/goggles may seem cool, but without extra immersion (like that multi-directional treadmill to go with it), the experience is limited.

And don't forget adding on headphones too.

One thing you'll notice about a lot of the Oculus vids is that when it comes to turning fully around, how is someone going to do that if they are sitting down? The game can be programmed so that if you turn your head far enough it will keep on turning, but then you'd have to turn your head back to stop it from turning all the way. Or they can program it so the sensitivity is high so just turning your head 45 degrees left/right makes your guy turn 180, but that would require someone to really control the head movement gently.

It'll be interesting to see how well it turns out. These VR goggles have been around for probably 20+ years. Tech has gotten 100x better, but oddly the goggles have gotten bigger. It's like a black brick is taped to your face.

Who the hell reads books on their TV? :txbconfused:

I would. I think it could be quite the experience with enough creativity for interacting with digital copies of your favorite novel. I'll admit the idea is kind of rough but I think it could work. Childrens books would be a gold mine with this kind of thing. Thats just me...

Top of the line hardware. Every game runs at 1080p 60fps for at least the next five years. Improved AI. Improve physics. IQ etc etc. and no god damn jaggies.

guess I am still waiting for next generation.

Given what we know now, you'll have to wait for next next gen launching around 2020!

Mc why even make threads if all your going to do is troll the Sony preference answers?

Sony's VR helmet would get a hellavalot more attention then kinect does from "gamers"

True next gen would be to have a cloud type service where NPC's would have an infinite data base of words from the English language to communicate with players via Kinect. No two conversations would be alike. Think the Milo project with Skynet intelligence!

WOOT! :bang:
