Got me a PS3

Finished it last night. Got to be honest, there were so many plot holes, I really lost that "suspension of disbelief" you need to remain connected to a game/story. And too much of the game seemed "sentimental" to me, by which I mean it just tried to evoke emotion without subtlety ("here is a sad part!"), without the story or the writing to back it up, which left me feeling sort of emotionally manipulated.

I admired Ellen Page's performance and the visuals. The story did have its moments, I don't want to discount it completely. It was ambitious, that's for sure. I just don't think it succeeded all that well, either as a movie or a game. 7/10 from me, with points for effort.

Which side did you choose in the end?

Beyond. It was an easy choice for me. Nothing really to keep me in the real world at that point. No romance with whatshisname, Nathan flipped out, a lifetime of being screwed over ... I figured I'd saved the world and done enough to earn a vacation.

But poor Ryan! Hahaha.

More end spoilers for 'Beyond two souls' - don't read if you want to play for different ending:

The ending I saw were pretty cool - she chose life - she had a romance with Ryan but failed to save him during the talk with Nathan Defoe in the condenser.
But decided to to go on living anyway - she moved in with the previously Homeless-people, she had saved all of them so they all were living in a condo, Jimmy were clean now - and Walter did small jobs here and there. :)
Zoey (the newborn baby) were different (had powers, I assume) - and it also made it seem like things were not to stay the safe for long - the goverment rebuilt a new condenser seeing how powerfull it were - and Jodie saw it as her mission to train Zoey for the inevitable fight coming 15-20 years for now.
Followed by some grim futuristic artwork, with a older Jodie and Zoey - wich seemed perfect for a sequel.

Also saw her sending a letter to Cole (assistant doctor) - surprisingly you could heal him with Aiden - making him survive, despite beeing a black sidekick - after he fell in the Condenser. :p

The other options, wich I didn't see - you could live choose to live with the Navahoe indians, and you could also go live alone.

That's cool, that's a very different ending than what I got.

Finished playing Rain a few minutes ago. It was okay, but I think they intended it to be more emotionally evocative than it was, at least for me. I think the faceless, voiceless nature of the characters left me feeling pretty detached. The action wasn't challenging, and the enemy scenarios felt pretty repetitive. The ending annoyed me, too, with all the different directions it went in. I appreciate that the game tried to achieve an artsy feel, but it came off pretentious, with the French music and the "fin" and all. It was a nice try, but it didn't really engage me all that much.

I also played several of the Telltale adventure games that I downloaded in that $1 sale. Back to the Future, Sam and Max, Monkey Island, and Jurrasic Park. The first three didn't interest me much -- they were the old style games where you talk to people endlessly, try to come up with the right combination of actions to move the story forward, again and again. I just found the pace of those games too plodding. Jurrasic Park was something they made in 2009 or 2011, and you can see them shift to a much more action-oriented style. It feels like the precursor to The Walking Dead, in many ways. It is the game where they probably figured out a lot of what worked in that style and what didn't, so that they could make Walking Dead such a success. I'm not sure if I'll bother completing the whole series, but I did enjoy the first episode.

Either Uncharted 3 or the first Resistance are up next. I'm trying not to keep my plate too full, so that I can move on to the PS4 in the summer, if I decide to do that.

One of the first games you should play on your PS4: Child of Light.

Do uncharted 3 next. Good game, not nearly as good as uncharted 2 though.

Yeah, I probably will. I've had a lot of low-key type gaming lately (Beyond, Telltale games, Rain), so I'm ready for more action. I definitely want to get through the Uncharted series.

I'm a little over halfway through Uncharted 3. I've been playing 2 or 3 chapters a day. It's good fun. The dialog is even better than in #2. The action ramps up faster, and you meet the tougher enemies earlier than in 2. Lots more hand-to-hand combat in this one, which is good. I enjoy pulling the pin out of enemies' grenades and being able to toss grenades back. For the most part, the game is really well paced, although there are times the gunfights seem a little drawn out to me. I remember hearing that it was glitchy, but I haven't run into any problems.

I played all 3 uncharted in a row a couple of years ago and loved them all. I still don't get the hate uncharted 3 gets by some people. I thought it was fantastic and just as good as 2. I guess people were expecting some big changes or something, but more of the same was fine by me. I love the uncharted series for the epic set pieces, fantastic characters and great story and 3 delivered on all those for me. I really don't know why people think 2 is way better than 3.

I'm with you. I am loving the third installment, and if there's any hate out there for it, I don't understand that at all. I'm really enjoying it -- even more than 2, I'd say. It seems paced better; it doesn't have the relentless, drawn out gunfights that 2 did. The story and dialog are better. The action provides just as many "wow" moments, and I haven't felt any of that sense of slogging through gunfights that I did in 2. It includes things you didn't get in 2, like the extended desert sequence, which I liked a lot.

I think it has a lot to do with expectations. I probably didn't enjoy 2 as much as I might have, because I heard a ton about how incredibly awesome and fantastic it was. I went in with huge expectations, and I ended up thinking, "That was good, but it wasn't THAT good." And on the other hand, I'm probably enjoying 3 more than I might have, because I heard so many people criticizing it. I went in thinking it would be a flawed mess. But playing through it, I'm thinking, "This is great, what were people complaining about?"

Crazy. I should probably just play games that other people complain about and criticize. I'd probably enjoy them more that way, lol.

Wow. Just finished Uncharted 3. What a great game. I really enjoyed that. The last scene was pretty cornball, and it did get a little glitchy in that last level, but what the hell, the whole thing was so good and so entertaining, I can't complain at all. It was a great action adventure, one of the best games I've played on the PS3, and easily in my top 10 for last gen. Whew! Big smile on my face when I finished.

The ending was indeed satisfying. What's next?

I also liked UC3 more than 2. They really perfected the gunplay and melee from the first two games.

It was fairly challenging too without feeling cheap.

What's next?

I think I'll take a little break for a while, since I was playing Uncharted pretty heavily over the last week.

Nothing is left on my "Must play before I trade in the console" list. Here is what is on my "May try, may skip" list:

  • Resistance 1
  • Metal Gear Solid 4
  • Syphon Filter: Omega Strain
  • Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time
  • Motorstorm

Not really sure. None of those are really calling to me right now. I may end up trying a couple of those, then moving on to the PS4 in the next month or two. I guess we'll see.

My recomendations before jumping to PS4, Journey - if you want a great game for 3 hours.
And Yakuza 3 and 4 if you want great for 50-60 hours, for each one. :)

I've already played Journey. Loved it.

From what I can tell, I don't think Yakuza is my thing.

So you're going to play TLoU : Remastered on the 4?

Last of Us will blow it out of the water

If that's your remain list, I'd move on.
Motorstorm series is great though.

Yeah, I may do that. I'm not feeling all that interested in any of them. I already played a Ratchet & Clank game recently and don't feel like another one so soon. I've never been a fan of Metal Gear. I know the Syphon Filter game will be mediocre. I'm not in the mood for another shooter (Resistance). And I'm not much into racing games.

I may give Hot Shots Golf a try, since I heard some good things about that, and I feel like a cooldown after Uncharted. I already bought Resistance, so I'll give that a whirl at some point. I also downloaded one of the Motorstorms as a part of PS plus, so I'll try that, too.

Wow, I just played, or tried to play, Syphon Filter: Omega Strain. I forgot how awkward that PS1/PS2 control scheme was. I couldn't get used to it. It felt so awkward to turn your character with one stick, using L2 and R2 to strafe left and right. Gah. The aiming felt so loosey goosey, it was a complete mess. I was walking into walls, my reticle swinging all over the place. I gave up. I knew I'd be fighting the controls more than the enemies. I heard the game was mediocre, so no big loss.

I felt like I had to check it out, because I enjoyed the PS1 Syphon Filter games, way back when. Nostalgia doesn't hold up so well, sometimes. But it was nice to see Gabe and Lian's awkwardly lip synched, blocky faces again. I had to laugh at Gabe's dialog. He's talking to the troops about saving the world -- big speech before the opening cinematic rolls -- and he ends with: "You're the only ones who can do it. Thanks." Thanks? lol.

Going through the last of my PS3 selections. MGS4 - after watching some video reviews, seems like it's a game for fans of the series, which I am not. Resistance 1 - couldn't get into it, seemed like just another shooter to me. Motorstorm - expired before I got to it (was on PS+). Hot Shots Golf - couldn't get used to that swing mechanic. Ratchet & Clank is still a possibility, but I'm not really feeling drawn to it.

I've moved on to Limbo. I played the demo on 360 but didn't like it at the time. My tastes have shifted more to the little games, now, and I've heard a lot of good things about it, so I went ahead and bought it. Macabre little game.

I also re-started Journey. I just love this game. This sounds corny, but it just kind of casts a spell over me, when I play it. It's so beautiful and mysterious. Flow and Flower have come to the PS4, so I assume Journey will, too.

Journey is interesting the second time around. I am understanding things I didn't before. For instance, the first time around, I didn't really get that I was rescuing those kite-shaped creatures, and that they were my friends. I didn't understand that the big creature is showing you the journey ahead, in abstract symbols, and that the first mural he shows you suggests that the central mountain is the source of all life and everything.

I also have seen some new things, like a white-robed character that flew around me. He seemed to have an unlimited ability to fly. The figure behaved like another player might, so I assumed it was an advanced state you can enter in the game, somehow. I didn't encounter anything like that on my first playthough. Also, on my second run, I can access any of the previous levels through the temples on the second (?) level. Interesting the way the game communicates that without using words. Interesting the way the whole game does that.

I find that I like playing alone better. Although it's nice to pair up with someone for a brief period of time, they've been playing a lot longer than I have, so they jump quickly to the next objective point, which robs me of the sense of discovery I like so much. So I usually end up ditching them.

Andy, two suggestions....#1: Play Motorstorm Pacific Rift and Apocalypse. The First Motorstorm wasn't very good, IMO. #2: Play the Two PSP God of war titles. They, imo, are far superior to the PS3 stuff. I believe it is called The Origins Collection

Anderson,

I just recently got a PS3 and my reaction to Resistance 1 was the same as you. I just couldn't get into it. Maybe I was too late to the party.

So I might just try Journey.
