Got me a PS3

Gow 3 is f***ing amazing! However, if you didn't like the other gows, you won't like 3 as the gameplay is the same. Plus you'll be lost in the story if you just jump into 3 without playing 1/2. Gow is one of the best franchises ever though. I just completed all 5 gow games from gow saga recently and they were all amazing. Each one was great and fun to play for the first time even in the year 2014.

GOW3 is good but GOW2 man its the best of the lot. I'd love to see the game redone with 3's looks. Ascension was not so great but still fun the 2nd PSP game to my shock was f***ing great. think that one and GOW2 are the best ones.

I dunno man. I loved them all and maybe I'm blinded by gow 3's shiny graphics, but I think I enjoyed that and its story the most. I like how in gow 3 the quick time events moved to the edges of the tv and the added item attack slot.

Thought the levels were pretty boring and tedious in 3, much prefer GOW2 as the best GOW and 1/ghosts as the 2nd best.

I enjoyed replaying the first Ratchet & Clank game. Fun gameplay, good characters, interesting mix of levels and weapons. It got annoying in the later levels, though, because I kept missing jumps and dying.

Tried Infamous 1, didn't like it all that much. It felt like another 3rd person shooter to me, except with powers rather than bullets. I'm not in the mood for another shooter. The aiming felt loose, too. I only played half an hour or so, but I wasn't feeling it, and I don't think I'll continue unless someone persuades me that it gets better.

I didn't last long with Jak & Daxter, which I tried next. It was nice to see Naughty Dog's sense of story and character even here, but I guess I imagined that I would enjoy an old-fashioned platformer more than I actually did. Nostalgia is a funny thing. Truth is, I never liked platformers all that much.

I downloaded The Unfinished Swan demo. I liked that a lot. Very mysterious. I like games that put you in a strange world like that. I like the quietness and originality of it, too. I bought it. I'll start playing it tomorrow.

I'm not nuts over the Infamous games. I talked about the loose controls in the Infamous 2nd Son thread. If you did not enjoy it the first hour or so I'd skip it. game is pretty much shot same guy for the 900th time and upgrading your health and powers by finding some dumb f***ing shards is a pain. I played 2 as it was free for PS+ same issues. Most of the missions are just you doing the same thing over and over again.

Thanks, that helps. I was getting a sense of repetitiveness even in the little bit I played, feeling as if I was shooting the same guy over and over. Not a good sign.

I like the levels and parts you have to traverse (bridge, building) in infamous. So, the shooting was just in the way of the parts I liked.

Unifnished Swan is interesting, you should possibly also try Papo and Yo, ugly semi puzzle adventure game. Maybe you can like that one.

Thanks, Jackie, I'll put it on my list. I watched the trailer, and it looked intriguing. The reviews seemed to be in the 7/10 range.

Having completed inFamous very recently I felt the same way, the 1st hour or so was a slog but when you get more powers the game becomes better and the enemies get tougher meaning you have to evade and move around better.Traversing also gets better with a power unlocked in the game and trains and zip lines; The story picks up too but I really was only totally engrossed by the story in the last 5 hours or so; it really picked up. I would give it another go but don't force yourself as the gameplay isn't going to change from its formula too much. I have read playing as evil is more fun to play but I can't say as I was good.

Can someone please describe the actual 'gameplay structure' of inFamous? Is it accurate to say that it's essentially an open-world/sandbox game; a giant map dotted with different 'missions' that you go around completing one-by-one? Or is it something else entirely?

I'm generally not a fan of open-world/sandbox games unless they're deep RPGs. inFamous intrigues me, due to all the positive things I've heard about it, but I've also heard it's at least similar to an open-world/sandbox game so I'm hesitant to add it to my PS3 must-buy list, unless someone can convince me otherwise...

Oh, and speaking of Ratchet & Clank, I actually just started Up Your Arsenal [PS2] today, the third game in the series (my first time playing it, but I have played the previous two). I'm once again reminded, wow, Insomniac REALLY knew what they were doing with these games; they are just pure videogamin' fun through and through. So good!

That is inFamous in a nutshell.

I don't like sandbox games that much (GTA, Red Dead) all feel really bad to me, but I enjoy Infamous and the way they handle some of the structure of the world and climbing in the first game. Looks like that is lost for just random moving in the new game though. Also really like the music in the first game.

You do have combat that is similar to shooting (but it's fun to upgrade I guess) I do like finding the shards actaully, and I enjoyed looking around for things on the buildings my-self even though a lot of people didn't like that.

I enjoyed the sly cooper'ish levels quite a bit, which you will come to early on, and that is what really got me hooked on the game. If it wasn't for the start, the collectibles and the structuered levels they put in to climb around on. I wouldn't have liked it so much.

Here's an update on the PS3 games I've played so far and my brief impressions.

Ratchet & Clank, HD remake of first PS 2 game: really enjoyed playing it again. Great characters, lots of fun weaponry and environments. I'm not a big fan of platforming, so I got a bit tired of that by the end. I was just getting used to the DS3, so I was falling a lot in the later, more complicated levels.

The Unfinished Swan - a really interesting, unique game. I thought it was a fun experiment and look forward to the rest of their games (they have a 3-game contract with Sony, I think). Nice nod to Journey in the middle, and it was cool to see Terry Gilliam played the King. A sort of detached yet interesting experience. I thought the painting mechanic would get old, but they mixed it up pretty good.

Papa & Yo - impressive mix of deep themes (child abuse) and a sort of childlike wonder in the environments. The puzzles were entertaining for most of the game, but they got a little repetitive by the 3/4 mark. Overall, though, I can't help feeling admiration for a team that tackled this subject in this way. I'm surprised a game like this got made.

Journey - loved it, one of the best games I've played in a long time. Inventive and beautiful. A work of art and spirit. I gushed about it elsewhere, so I'll just say it was a unique and very memorable experience.

Infamous 1 -- tried to play it, but just couldn't get into it. The controls felt loose, the character didn't interest me, shooting the lightning wasn't interesting, the enemies seemed cookie-cutter ... it just didn't grab me. I put that one down after about an hour.

Shadow of the Collossus HD remake - I expected to like this but found I didn't. I liked the sense of scope, but I didn't like the Save system or lack of thereof, and I didn't like the setup of the game, which seemed like a series of boss fights. I really disliked the controls. I died in the first fight, then got reset back to the beginning of the game, rinse and repeat, then died again because of the awkward controls (or my awkwardness at them, who knows)... I just got annoyed with it and stopped.

Jak & Daxter - HD remake of first PS2 game - I wanted to see where Naughty Dog started, but when I played this, I remembered again why I didn't like platformers all that much. I just couldn't get into jumping and collecting stuff. It's just not a mechanic I find all that interesting. I did like the characters and dialog, though. I guess that's something Naughty Dog has done well from the beginning.

So, some hits and some misses. I'll probably play either Uncharted 2 or Beyond: Two Souls next.

if you're referring to the actual set-up, then the controls are fully customizable. i used L1 to jump and R1 to grab and found that that made for a very accessible set-up. as for saving, i died in the first boss fight and got restarted to beginning of the fight again, so i'm not sure why you had a problem of going right back to the opening of the game.

I think I quit to the menu or else quit the game entirely. I didn't feel like replaying the fight again at the time. I assumed there would be an autosave or checkpoint or something. Guess not.

By "setup," I meant two things: 1) the structure -- find all these giant beasties and kill them -- and 2) the story setup, the motivation for the main character. By motivation, I mean the way the hero is trying to bring back the soul of his dead girlfriend or sister or whatever ... I think if someone is dead, let their soul be; it's selfish, not noble, to try to get their soul back in their body. I'm a little different, I guess, in that I find it hard sometimes to get into a game if the main character is acting from a motive I don't really agree with or can't relate to.

I think its the design of teh world that really hooked me in SOTC, the parts of the world are so unique and designed so well they are worth traveling to and seeing. Plus, most of the colosusses are very unique and fun to play. I think you maybe need to grasp the bosses a little better, most people shouldn't die while fighting them. Falling off and having to climb back to them could be a requirement for some. Other than that, Loved it. Maybe you can give it another try, I never thought of the story for the game when playing that one.

I'll probably give it another shot later. For whatever reason, this game just irritated me at the time I played it. The controls got on my nerves, the long series of boss fights it laid out seemed tedious, the environments were big but otherwise rather bland, the save system annoyed me, etc. ... I just wasn't feeling it. I may feel differently if I try it a couple months from now, who knows.

I'll probably play either Uncharted 2 or Beyond: Two Souls next.

Uncharted 2 all day. Did you already play Drake's Fortune yet or are you just skipping it? Seriously though, get on U2 now. I wish i could play it for the first time again. It truly was an experience.

SOTC has very interesting levels, canyons that you have to climb into and so on. Much better than oblivion for comparison.

I didn't actually played the Unfinished swan yet, but I'm eager to try that out from you saying it gets a bit of a mix.

I do want to get into the jack and other ratchet games on ps3, fine if you don't like them. I just need to get them, seems there are so many on ps3....

Yeah, I'll probably do that. I did own a PS3 briefly, several years ago, so I've played the first Uncharted already. Really enjoyed it.

Unfinished Swan is a really unique game, with an odd gameplay mechanic, and it switches up every level. It's fairly easy. It tells a story like a fairy tale, which is kind of odd, and I think I'll have to play it a second time to understand it better.

I love Ratchet & Clank. That first one (the one I replayed recently) was one of the first console videogames that I really enjoyed. Played it with my then-stepdaughter, and I liked it so much I bought myself a PS2 so I could find out more about this "videogame thing." The rest is history.

I've played a couple other R&C games and hope to get to Crack in Time eventually. I hear that's one of the better of the recent ones. I played Tools of Destruction, too. That was fun.

The first ratchet may have been my favorite as it seemed to be the less gun heavy, I actually like shooting the enemies a little less than I do the traveling. I think I only played the first PS3 game, so I have a ways to go. I think maybe I own the HD set but not so sure on that. I know there is the pirate DLC as well, hasn't been cheap enough from what I have seen for me atleast.

Playing through Uncharted 2 right now. Great game. Just finished the train section. Whew. Great characters, voice acting, writing... Some pretty emotional moments. Reminds me of a summer blockbuster, except you're playing the main character. I like the way the story is told, jumping around in time, but not so much that they lose me. The repartee between the characters is pretty good sometimes, too. I've laughed out loud a couple of times. I've gotten pretty emotionally hooked by the story and the character interactions at times, too. And the action is never boring; they do a really good job of mixing it up and keeping things moving.

Yeah. It's basically what you've described.
Run around and do missions in a open world, collect power-ups for your powers.

You also got to repair electricity to certain parts of the city, so you can charge and use your powers there to get around quicker and fight better.
If you're evil people will throw rocks at you, or run and get the police, if you're a hero, they will run up to you, ask for autographs and picture of you and help you out by throwing rocks at enemies. :-/

It's not that comlpex, and it's a action-game more than RPG, but got some minor RPG elements, such as power up, and allow you to choose how you want to be perceived by other. :)

The lake monster with electricity is where I got frustrated and quit. Beautiful game though.

I agree with Anderson that the controls could have been done better.
