How the hell is the ps4 cooled? It has no external power brick and that big ol GPU. That's some serious engineering if it has no cooling issues.

XB1 is supposed to run nearly silent to fit the "living room" theme, which is why the heatsink is huge and the fan is large (larger fan = less high pitched noise). It's almost a guarantee PS4 will run louder.

Yes, but will it run hotter? I know it has a overheat shutoff, which is good...any electronic that generates high amounts of heat should, but with the power supply internal, and what looks to be very little airspace, will the PS4 have adequate cooling for long gaming sessions? And then there are the idiots who think they can put these things in tight cubbies with inadequate airflow..or cover them with blankets/pizza boxes etc. Not saying the PS4 will have rampant widespread overheating issues, just wondering if it has an adequate cooling system for it's design.

The huge fan and huge open air design of the X1 seems to me to be a response to the RROD fiasco and them trying to make sure that no matter what it had overly adequate cooling/ventilation.

As long as the PS4 is quieter than the original PS3 like they said, I don't care too much.

I'd guess the PS4 cooling is adequate with proper ventilation, but I agree they should have went for a larger case and heatsink/fan for the first hardware revision. That would also give them room to safely increase the clockrate on the CPU/GPU. It already looks about as small as a PS3 slim.

I can imagine quite a lot of hot air blasting out of the back of the PS4, it looks like one giant ventilation exhaust. Anyone putting blankets on their PS4 or inside a tiny entertainment cab will probably end up with an overheating shutdown message.

Pretty much this. I'm actually a little nervous about that design. Especially after seeing the steambox and how Valve designed the air buffers. There is nothing like that here.

It reminds me of an Old Dell desktop I used to have, and well...it didn't end well.

I remember seeing vids of people wrapping their 360's in blankets and then when it RROD'd acting shocked like it shouldn't have ever happened...

I don't know if many noticed but it also has vents on the one side within that ridge. So at minimum two sides will have vents (the entire back being the other). I do not believe the front has any and i kinda doubt the side you can put the stand on would.

Here is a link you can rotate the console and see what i am talking about.

I guess we'll see on whether it overheats or not. With the FCC certification it actually ran cooler than the PS3 by quite a bit.

RROD wasn't necessarily overheating as much as it was the solder becoming brittle then cracking under normal use, then the chips detaching from the motherboard. Even an overheating shutdown detector like in the PS4 and XB1 wouldn't prevent that.

Yeah I know, just people were purposely overheating them to cause the RROD issue from unsoldering, and then being shocked when it overheated and broke lol although yes RROD was a design flaw.

Dont understand why MS wouldnt allow for replaceable harddrive.

Looks like it would be a lot easier to do it on the xb1 then the ps4 haha.

The xb1 looks like a htpc with off the shelf parts.

PS4 has a nice design and very nice how they integrated the power supply. Beats the brick and the XBO's generally generic 'spacious box' design. The proof for both designs will be found well down the road and millions of user hours later. That said, I like the XBOs exterior design better than the PS4.

Bummer. Apple laptops are among the worst for overheating...

I just checked on this because it didn't sound right after being a Consumer Reports subscriber for many years and reading the opposite, and sure enough Apple is the #1 most reliable laptop brand by far according to Which? Magazine, Consumer Reports, PC Mag, PC Advisor, and everywhere else I just looked.

More impressed with how the PS4 was put together. It looks a lot more well though out compared to XB1. It just looks like Microsoft didn't put to much in the thought process. I'm pretty sure they could have had an internal PSU, but it seems like they just slapped a bunch of components together hoping for the best.

Such a difference in cooling considering they're essentially the same god damn thing haha.

It's got 8GB of flash in the HD that I presume is being used for either system OS or for storing app/game state for the quick resume. I'd still like to see both companies support both external HDs and replaceable HDs, but I can see the case for not allowing replacement HDs if you're relying specifically on hybrid HDs.

Apples don't overheat. They simply enhance their value by becoming a delicious pie, letting you know it's time to purchase a newer model.

Typical Apple, jackin' their consumers on the laptop then again for an overpriced apple pie...
