Official Thread Inside

Pick it up Andy. I finished Inside over the weekend. It's the best indie game this gen in my opinion. Worth every penny.

Will do. I wasn't a big fan of Limbo, and I've heard this is similar, so I'm not real optimistic. But I'll give it a shot.

It's similar but better i think. The puzzles aren't as difficult. I was amazed at how well a game can tell a story without any narration. Great atmosphere.

What TD and yankeesuck said.

It has some clever puzzles and some trial and error stuff. But it's not frustrating in the least.

The story is a lot more interesting too imo although up for a lot of interpretation. It might not be what you expect.

Cool, I'll go into it with a little more optimism, then.

And hey Andy, when I say the story is interesting I mean the atmosphere and sense of wonder. I beat the game and have no idea what the deeper meaning is.

If you get it, I'd like to get your opinion on it.

And yeah, I'd heard that, about the story -- that it's pretty vague, open to lots of different interpretations.

Played the first hour. I like it. It has overcome what I felt was Limbo's biggest deficiency, which was the lack of variety. This game mixes things up better. Also, Limbo's deaths were gorey but sort of gamey or silly. I wince at the deaths here, because although they are less gorey, they are more disturbing, probably because they're being inflicted by adults, rather than by spiders or machinery.

The puzzles are solvable with a little persistence. Controls and animations are slick. I like the mysterious atmosphere. There is some humor there, too, e.g., in how goofily the zombified people move. The first time that mechanic was introduced, I laughed and marveled at how inventive and well-executed it was.

Some of the animation late in the game is unbelievable. That's all I'll say.

There's an original thread on this game, which I'll merge this one into later. I'd like to give any PS4 owners (including me) a chance to play through it first, "uncontaminated" by other people's impressions and commentary.

I'll pick it up in the future when it's on sale most likely.

Played some more today. I appreciate how much creativity went into it. The game keeps showing me new mechanics or situations. It doesn't feel repetitive at all. I don't want to spoil anything, so I want comment on specifics, but I've been delighted at several of the things that have happened.

Everything is done very well -- the graphics, the animation, all the little touches. I heard the game took 5 years to develop. That's a long time for an indie. It shows. There is a lot of intelligence and artistry here.

My only gripe, I suppose, is that the structure feels a lot like Limbo: complete this puzzle, move to next puzzle, to next, to next. There is a lot more variety in the stages than in Limbo, and I love that. But combine the structure with the trial and error nature of the gameplay, and the faceless and voiceless characters, it ends up feeling somewhat sterile and "gamey," if you know what I mean. I'm mentally engaged in the puzzle solving, but I'm not connected to the character or immersed in the world; instead, I'm very aware that I'm playing a game, that I need to figure out the mechanics of this stage to move on to the next.

I do appreciate the creativity and technical excellence, and I can see why it got high marks. I'm enjoying it.

Freaky.

I know what you mean now, Dno69, about the animation near the end. That was crazy. No spoilers, so I'll just stop there.

I've shared most of my thoughts already, so I won't repeat. I'm not a big fan of puzzle platformers or dark/foreboding settings, so Inside had an uphill climb with me, but it won me over. There were other indie games that I enjoyed more this year than Inside, but speaking objectively, this is the best indie I've played. The level of creativity, technical excellence, and inventiveness is remarkable. 9/10 for me.

Those Danes are some weird folks.

Andy,

Be sure (if you haven't already) to go back and do the secret ending and get the remainder of the achievements. I did that and it extended the value of the game for me. I did not use Youtube for ANY of the main game play, but I did use Youtube to get the missing achievements. Some are easy, and some are a tiny bit challenging. I really didn't get the secret ending nor the main ending, but eh. I loved it anyway.

Glad you liked it Andy. I'll probably pick it up and play it again on the PS4 when it goes on sale or something. The devs earned it and then some with this one.

Not a clue, lol.

I think the story was a metaphor for growing up and becoming a slave to the system. [\spoiler]

This is what I posted when the game was fresh in my mind. I have no idea what I'm talking about though. Lol

So I finally got around to finishing with all the orbs, and wow.

Easily the best animation I've seen in a game, as disgusting as it was.

And it's amazing how powerful a narrative can be without a dialogue expressed in any way, except for visual cues.

Yeah, the mystery adds to the story, imo. I'd be very disappointed if it was a "slave to the system" narrative, personally. That's pretty played out. It does work though.

So you are driven to the complex and once you merge with the blob of humanity, they let you out into the world again. He escapes the round-up only to be absorbed in the end

There's an alternate ending I saw on Youtube. Not sure how you get that, but it turns out differently.

You need to collect all the collectibles then go back to an early chapter.
