Official Thread Minecraft Thread

I wish I had gotten a video of my daughter's reaction to this update! She's been VERY anxiously awaiting "the horse update", as she calls it.

"Wait, what? Minecraft?" That's what I thought, too. Yup, Minecraft.

Apparently, this was announced late last year, but I'm only now hearing about it. It's going to be called Minecraft: Story Mode.

This is from Telltale's site:

"As 2014 comes to a close, we are delighted to confirm our partnership with Mojang to create a new episodic game series based on one of the most popular video games in history - Minecraft."

"Minecraft: Story Mode will be an all-new narrative-driven game series developed by Telltale in collaboration with Mojang. Set in the world of Minecraft, the series will feature an original story, driven by player choice. It will not be an add-on for Minecraft, but rather a separate stand-alone product that will premiere in 2015 on consoles, computers and mobile devices."

"Telltale's game series will mix new characters with familiar themes, in an entirely original Minecraft experience, inspired by the Minecraft community and the game that continues to inspire a generation."

And this is from Mojang's blog:

"In other news, we’re collaborating with Telltale Games to create Minecraft: Story Mode! Here are some bullet points to celebrate!
  • Minecraft: Story mode will be a narrative-driven video game created by Telltale Games. It will be about Minecraft.
  • Mojang is collaborating with Telltale and members of the community to make Minecraft: Story Mode as Minecrafty as possible.
  • The first episode will be released some time in 2015, and will be available on Xbox consoles, PlayStation consoles, PC, Mac, iOS, and Android-based devices.
  • Minecraft: Story Mode will be released episodically, just like The Wolf Among Us, The Walking Dead, or the recent Tales from the Borderlands, which is another developer-collaboration series between Telltale Games and Gearbox Software.
  • We’re not intending on creating an “official” story for Steve, or explaining the world of Minecraft in detail. It will be a cool game.

Just finished the first episode of Borderlands, which I enjoyed very much. I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with the Minecraft world.

A company that makes sh*tty games is now making another poopfest about the biggest turd of all time? This stinks.

Well, given what Microsoft spent for them, they have to find a way to get their money's worth. But I really don't know what to think about a story mode being added for a game like this.

Taking a dump on another thread, I see.

Word is this was in talks before Microsoft acquisition, and with deals like this, that only sounds natural.

BTW there were definitely some ppl that were embarrassed when the news was out, but then others were uploading a photo taken from a local B&N. One whole shelf from the bookstore was totally dedicated to Minecraft guides and novelizations for kids.

Not surprised. Minecraft has inspired a ton of animated shorts and this will probably be amongst cream of the crop. Not sure if I'd get into it though. Not the biggest minecraft fan. Maybe one day I'll get into it. Minecraft 2 baby!

When I see sewage, I don't want to waste it.

Ok, let's get back to the subject of the thread.

I suppose they'll use the graphics of Minecraft in the game. I wonder where they'll get the story from. With all the other licenses they've used, there have been substantial worlds and storylines already pre-built. What is there to build from, here?

I've never played it but TellTale has a way of telling great stories.. almost to the point where I'll pick up any of their games. I wasnt' really attracted to Borderlands story, but I picked up Tales and was immediately intrigued.

I've come to realize that MW doesn't like most games. He s***s on pretty much 90% of them..

And the only ones he doesn't trash-talk about happen to be Watch Dogs and ACU. Ugh...
There were times when he was pretty good at digging at 'the next big thing', but now I just don't care anymore.

Some more info:

"Minecraft: Story Mode is an adventure game, by Telltale Games, set in a Minecraft world. It is a five-part episodic series that will take you to the Nether, the Farlands, the End, and beyond!

"Players will control protagonist Jesse throughout the season, as portrayed by actor Patton Oswalt. Jesse and his group of friends revere the legendary Order of the Stone; four adventurers who slayed an Ender Dragon. The Order is the very best at what they do: Warrior, Redstone Engineer, Griefer, and Architect. While at EnderCon, Jesse and his friends discover that something is wrong... something dreadful. Terror is unleashed, and they must set out on a journey to find The Order of the Stone if they are to save their world from oblivion.

"The season will feature Patton Oswalt, Brian Posehn, Ashley Johnson, Scott Porter, Martha Plimpton, Dave Fennoy, Corey Feldman, Billy West, and Paul Reubens."

"Available to download soon for PC, Mac, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, compatible iOS devices, and Android."

Sounds cheesey, and the trailer doesn't do much for me, but I'll probably check out the first episode. I assume the Minecraft tie-in will ensure it's a success.

Interesting that Patton Oswalt is in it. I'm not a fan, but I guess he's got the nerd credentials to star in what seems like a fairly nerdy game.

Meh. Seems super cheesy. Maybe they can prove me wrong, but I don't see that universe bring interesting enough for story episodes.

I imagine that's on purpose. It looks to have a comedy edge to it.

The whole purpose of Minecraft is to make your own story. Take a hint from Lego on how they screwed up their blocks by coming out with themed sets telling kids what they had to make. Back in my day Lego's were just a bunch of blocks and left to our own creativity.

Ok, so if they do try to make a story then please make it where the player is fully in control of how it goes. A story that could lead somewhere or nowhere at all. Completely open-ended like the game itself. No idea how, but I do know that funneling this game down a linear path is the antithesis of what this game is all about.
