I love Project CARS, but after spending more time with it, it is NOT a very pretty game. FM5 looks better, less the AA. I can't imagine what they will do with FM6, since the game is already running at a locked 60fps and 1080p. They better not sacrifice performance just to add weather/night. It better be solid as f***.
I disagree. Or.... well I agree and disagree. I've played it on both ps4 and pc and it's weird because the same core is there, but the ps4 edition is kind of like the mid pc edition, but with haphazard settings. There is a lot of that game is gorgeous, but it really feels like they just put it on some medium settings. There's a lot more going on too, with all the cars, but draw distance, certain effects look or transition... it all looks janky.
A game like driveclub or forza is designed to work within the limitations of the console. Those limitations define it in a positive way. Maps, number cars, effects, model fidelity, textures... they are all done from the ground up to work within the limitations. So while you may see some pop in or whatever, for the most part the game is designed to never have those moments. Instead of having a car look really weird at a certain distance, the game never lets the situation happen. If it does the blur, dof and any number of other effects are built specifically to make to create a cohesive look. Or at least that's what happens with really pretty games.
Project Cars on PC looks like that too because at max settings it's expecting you to have the horsepower. Every game does what I mentioned above about the console games to some extent, but in a game like project cars on pc the developers can either rely on the power of your pc or the settings to help you reach a happy performance level. I know the console games actually have some decent settings too, but it still looks like they just through on some settings that let it run on console without considering the specific impact that had. At times on console and pc project cars astonishes me with how it looks, but then on console at least it ruins it with some weird pop in or odd filtering.
That said seeing dozens of cars pour through a couple corners is still a sight to behold. The models and textures are there, but without the lighting and extra oomph of the oc and the specific design of a console developed title Project Cars on console ends up jumping from gorgeous to, a little off, to just janky in very short periods of time.
