PlayStation®4 Sales Surpass 5.3 Million Units Worldwide

but we all know Brazil is one of the biggest gaming markets, and MS got it locked. SUCK IT SONY. SUCK IT!

Haha, that'll likely change too once they start making some consoles there so that huge tax won't have to be imposed on PS4's anymore.

Yup, and the fact that one is just over 4 million and the other is just over 5 million is great news for the most important people, us gamers! Competition for the win!

Difference is PS4 has sold over 5.3 million consoles to consumers, X1 is likely sitting at 3.3-3.4 million sold through at most right now. It still shows that console gaming isn't dead though much to the disappointment of those doom and gloomers who seemingly want everyone to move to phones and tablets.

MS needs to drop that $499 MSRP or else the gap will just keep on widening like this.

Both are actually to retail and consumers. The Xbox One had 3.9 million sold to consumers in January, so they are most likely over 4 million sold now.

So over 5 million sold to retail and consumers for the PS4 in over 50 countries (great). Over 4 million sold to retail and consumers for the X1 in 13 countries (great).

Indeed a win for all.

No the 3 million MS gave was what was sold through to consumers as of the end of December. The 3.9 was sold into the retail channel meaning shipped. If you noticed NPD for January for the X1 was only around 140k and that's going to be their highest number for the month by far from anyplace they are currently selling the console. Sony is saying their numbers are sold through not shipped, so there is a difference there and it's significant

That isn't what I read. I read that Sony's is sold to retail and consumers, cumulative. Same with Microsoft.

Here is the official press release, it says sold through not shipped or sold to retail, sold through means sold to consumers. MS said as of the end of December they had sold 3 million Xbox One consoles, there is no way they sold anywhere near half of the other 9 million they shipped with NA only buying 140k consoles last month.

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) today announced that the PlayStation®4 (PS4™) computer entertainment system has cumulatively sold through more than 5.3 million units*1 around the world as of February 8, 2014 (JST), and is continuing to demonstrate strong growth and momentum.

If you want to believe that sold through is to consumers and not to consumers + retail, you are welcome to believe that.

Being that it says it in their press release I will believe it, I don't know why you'd choose not to. Did you read it? I also don't know why you'd think MS would have shipped another several hundred thousand units to retail when there were likely already 700k or so still left over from what they shipped in December that are still sitting in warehouses or on store shelves.

Xbox One sold through 3M and shipped 3.9M as of the end of 2013. They only managed to sell 141K in the US, which makes up the majority of its sales from worldwide. They probably sit at around 3.3M-3.4M to the same date as Sony's report. So 3.3/3.4M vs. 5.3M.

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2014/01/microsoft-reports-3-9-million-xbox-one-shipments-in-2013/

In its quarterly earnings report today, Microsoft announced that it shipped 3.9 million units of the Xbox One to retailers worldwide from its launch in late November through the end of 2013.

It's important to note that shipments to retailers aren't the same as final sales to end consumers. Though those numbers usually track relatively closely (since retailers order new shipments to replenish stocks of systems they've actually sold), many of those 3.9 million shipments in 2013 might be sitting on retail shelves for a little while in 2014. Still, the new report gives a bit more context to Microsoft's previous announcement that it had sold "over 3 million" Xbox One units through to consumers by the end of the year.

sold through has different meanings to Sony and MS according to some...

Yea, I'm really confused why people are trying to spin this. Sold-through isn't a hard concept to understand. It's a commonly used term in retail and doesn't change meanings from one company to the next.

-Sony has announced that it has sold through 5.3 million units to date.
-Sony has not announced how many units it has shipped to retailers to date.

-Microsoft announced that they sold through 3 mil units by the end of December.
-Microsoft announced that they shipped 3.9 million units to retails by the end of December.

How is this so hard to understand?

Based on Microsoft's January NPD numbers, it's safe to assume that Microsoft has probably sold through about 3.3-3.5 million units by now.

Wow, the gap against the competition is growing so fast. Keep it up Sony you're success will bring some changes to the competition that will most likely benefit us gamers.

Agreed completely. I own a One and want it to be successful this generation, but I'm also hoping Sony does continue to kick a** with their sales. Hopefully this will make the Xbox division go back to their pre-2011 state were IMO they couldn't do anything wrong.

I don't care if the Xbox One has other entertainment features, as long as it doesn't take away from the core gaming experience, but this obviously isn't the case with the One.

Sony:
5.3 million shipped to retailers = At least 5 million+ sold to consumers.
- PS4 is sold out @ most retailers.

MS:
4 million shipped to retailers = At least 3 million+ sold to consumers.
- X1 is not sold out at any major retailers. You can easily walk into one and buy it.

I think MSFT is trying to do too much with their new console. Sony's focus is more narrowly focused on games and their success because of it may sway MSFT to focus more on core gaming features, at least I hope.

I predict ps4 does more than ps2 did @ 10 years, quote me then

population increase + low price + MS hatred
