PlayStation®4 Sales Surpass 5.3 Million Units Worldwide

It says right in the linked PR that Sony is estimating how many consumers actually bought the device.

Number of retail sales to consumers is estimated by SCEI.

So this isn't shipped... it's sold through to consumers.. which is always an estimate.

Amazing sales either way. Will be really interesting to see long-term sales though. I could see the trend not really continuing for either company.. 8 years was a long time for so many 10's of millions to wait.. we could be seeing 2+ years of console sales shoved into the first half a year and then drop back down to more normal rates.

I predict ps4 does more than ps2 did @ 10 years, quote me then

population increase + low price + MS hatred

I'd easily take you up on that if you were betting.

Wouldn't be shocked to see the PS4 sell under the PS2's numbers overall.

These quick sales don't necessarily mean the market grew. Part of the high sales (for both consoles really, relative to past launch) is we've never had so many people waiting so long for new consoles.

The market is just so different in general.. people could just as easily want to move on faster than any past generation too, with how people are so willing to consume and get rid of expensive devices year over year.

I see this gen being another 80-100M.

Remember for a few years everyone thought the Wii was going to sell more than the PS2.

Yeah it's way too early to start saying it'll match PS2's numbers, people seem to forget the price tag that the PS2 sold a lot of those units at. I don't know that we'll ever see a $150 PS4. Not only that but who knows if it'll even be on the market for 10 years?

lol oh I'm not betting, but the ps3 did 80 million in a terrible economy WITH a higher starting price AND much more difficult technology. 120million is probably more realistic, but 150 wouldn't surprise me if the ps4 got down in the $300 range with a ton of badass exclusives.
