PlayStation 4 software 1.5 update detailed

MS had tech in place that allowed changes to the system as well as games to be small.

Sony didn't..

Essentially Sony's last OS/execution environment was like how Apple "updates" iTunes.. you have to download almost the entire new version of iTunes to update it.. whereas MS's used a "patching" process that could just for the most part patch in the differences.

I haven't outright seen proof of it, but it's been said before that Sony has addressed this issue.

So expect Sony's updates to be similar in size to MS's.. that size was the biggest part of the problem with Sony's updates, not the frequency.

And this all makes perfect sense to me with modern complex software.. your best bet is to create a simplified "day one" version that can play singleplayer games at the very least and offers basic functionality, and leave the other stuff to a day one download. Gives you a couple of months to update the software, as full production of the console starts about that long before launch.

MS didn't even bother to do that much.. which is fine for me, but not for others.. and is an understandable complaint, as it is rather unprecedented to actually DESIGN your product to require a download.

Lots of devices released over the last decade were effectively borked without an update, but for the most part the only use of those devices was online.

A certain chunk of people still don't consider "being online" a necessity for a game console, I think these people are a minority but their concern isn't invalid.

These consoles are being rushed out of the gate and I do find it a bit worrisome. Thankfully this is a small update (data size) and shouldn't crash the network. I must say I am most disappointed and worried about the low power state, that is not something you really want to be patching in.

Yeah unless they are just doing final testing and whatnot, it's possible that launch games won't be compatible with the power state feature once it's released.

That type of feature almost requires some API hook.

And these also are the most feature rich consoles in the history of consoles.. so while it all might feel "rushed" it's partly just due to their complexity.

300 megs is typically no big deal, but everyone will be downloading it the second they flip the system on, so I can't imagine that the download speeds will be great.

Hopefully the installs don't include downloads within downloads again.

The network being slow for the 300 megs i don't think will be a problem. People will get the console at different times during the day, will set it up during different parts of the day and i imagine total we are talking like 2M people at launch. Plus, the download size is small.

As for the update, i would be shocked if you couldn't download it via a PC/flash drive.

I am surprised that this many features are in the download however. I'll be interested to see how the X1 initial download is in comparison.

Is this another gen of the never ending updates from Sony ? How annoying. The Size is also pretty large when you compare them to general system updates from MS this gen.

I know people are saying the xbox needs one too, but the circumstances are different. MS had to change a lot of their original plans. So why annoying , it is more understandable.

Are the days of actually buying a finished gaming product done ?

Yes. All theree consoles from the new generation needed or will need day one updates. And games...some early purchasers are beta testers.

So it looks like you will need a online connection after all to unlock your PS4, LOL! I laugh because the XBOX ONE got so much grief for their day one patch. I'm sure Sony will get a free pass yet again though. ;)

Of course this bothers me about as much as the XBOX ONE patch.

That's a hell of an update right out of the box. Sucks if you don't have an internet connection to get it.
Half those missing features rely on online play, so if someone is strictly an offline gamer, they aren't going to care about uploading or spectator mode anyway. So those missing features are a non-issue.

But even for basic features like multi-log in and DVD/BR movie watching, you can't unless you get the patch.

I agree with Intellivision that both consoles suck for this lame internet connection requirement just to use your video game console.

Oh , you mean open and honest about what that day one 1 patch includes on xb1. Or even how big it is. Not just "It'll take like 15 to 20 mins".

If they were honest like MS has been with their endless Q&A sessions dating back to June/July, they could have told people this as MS stated months ago you need to download a patch.

I hate to do this because I imagine you'll use this line everywhere but I think it's funny and sometimes that takes precedence. In any case, I don't see how they're being dishonest - they've been saying "Greatness Awaits" for months now, right? You just missed the small print: "Greatness awaits... on completion of 300MB download"

Now, on a serious note, and mind you I'm not getting the PS4, but I say so effing what. I think pretty much at this point the console fanboy test could be what your reactions were to the fact that the XB1 has a day 1 patch, that Forza 5 has that day 1 "DLC" and the PS4's announced day 1 patch. If you thought all three were a negative, all three were positive, or all three were insignificant, congratulations! If not, well, you know who you are and we probably know who you are too.

Yup but not everbody especially those who don't like a product go out of their way to go to take jabs at that brand or kick it when its down.

its okay though cause when the dust settles PS4 still will outsell the XBO next gen and the reaction from certain individuals will be price less :)

well I prefer if all three would succeed as that would be better for the gamers
the console industry has crashed in the past, so competition is indeed good

so hurrah for all of them

Any way, you reap what you sow. Certain individuals shouldn't have raged and pointed at other consoles for doing things that their own console of choice is doing. I saw this coming a mile away. The PS4 went from, "No need to get online" to "You need an online patch day one just to use your Blu-ray/DVD player". Oh Sony. :smash:

Of course for me, nothing changes since me and my 3 billion friends around the world have internet. Of course, according to Sony, the media and a lot of fanboys at E3, no one has internet. NO ONE!

I don't get why this is a big deal. It's a day one patch. So? We get day 1 patches all the time. I don't get the outrage.

Seems like people are getting bent out of shape over the smallest bits of news.

We must be on the verge of a console launch or something.
