Players who own the current-gen version of the game will be able to upgrade to the next-gen version at no additional cost, regardless if players are moving from PlayStation®4 to PlayStation®5 or Xbox One to Xbox Series X. Those moving their saves to next-gen will transfer their player profiles and progression so they can pick up right where they left off. In addition, cross-gen play will be supported so PS5™ players will be able to play with their friends on PS4™ and Xbox Series X players will be connected with their friends on Xbox One.

I guess that's good to know for those using the older systems.

That sucks.

Not really... i think i know why they did it, too. I think a lot of it was due to VR; it still needs a core platform to be tethered to in order to power the headset as it doesn't support it's own internal gaming processors. Which is a pretty good clue that PS5 games will also be using the headset (PSVR 1.0 until VR 2 launches). :) It's not like these types of games can be streamed from the cloud, not yet. The framerate is just far too high right now. At minimum, the framerate has to be 120fps in order to keep users from getting sick, so Sony had to make sure the two platforms were equally matched in horsepower in order to deliver that. I'm almost sure they may increase the fps to 240 at some point.

But like i said before, i don't think these platforms are the end of where Sony wants to go with gaming. There is a reason they are interested in the cloud, in which they are not yet talking about yet.

This is the major innovation with the next-generation of console hardware. They have faster CPUs, they have faster GPUs, and that was really important to be able to achieve the visuals that we showed. But the biggest change across console generations is absolutely going to be the I/O bandwidth that we're able to achieve with the SSDs that are in next-generation consoles.

And now we know that Sony is using Oogle as well as Kraken for compression. This is going to be interesting. Cenry spoke of the decompressor chip they built for the SSD to be able to decompress Kraken code and if compressed well that it could compress up to 22GBs of data over the 8 to 9GBs. Holy crap! Imagine what developers will do once they wrap their heads around this thing. Games are going to look spectacular.

How large do you think install sizes are going to be? To read from disk, you've got to get what you're reading onto the disk.

Now, as a developer, it’s the eradication of load times that I think will mark the biggest change, both for us and for the players. In the case of an engine that really takes advantage of that, it should be possible to spawn in an open world extremely quickly. For example, a game like GTA V will no longer have to use subterfuge to move from one character to another, it’s going to be at lightspeed. And for game development itself, it’s going to be really handy because our testing teams won’t be spending long stretches of time in front of loading screens. You have to understand that this famous SSD has a speed comparable to that of the PS4’s RAM, which is just incredible! Loading tons of items into memory, then making them appear instantly on the screen, won’t really be a problem anymore since access to the disk seems to be so fast.

Because GTA is an open world, i wouldn't be surprised if they allowed you to climb down into random sewers with this type of transitioning. It's going to really be amazing for sure.

Give it time...

I don't see how "give it time" answers me asking you how big you think install sizes are going to be. (unless you're saying they'll be big enough that it'll take time to load them, but that's just me smartassing a pun).

You're gonna have to wait it out. That's my best advice to you.

Install sizes will be smaller. How much smaller than the current usual 50GB nobody knows. Also hard to tell how much will be compressed. Things like textures and Audio files tend to make up the bulk of tge install size. Currently you can only compress textures so far.

It doesn’t come with the vertical stand?

The PS2 and PS3 never came with a stand, so there's a possibility that this may not, also. On the other hand, this console is very oddly shaped, so there is a possibility that it could ship with the stand in order for it to lie down as that seems to be the neutral position. Ultimately, i wouldn't take those figures too seriously until an official announcement is made.
