Project Scorpio

$350? No way. I stl believe MS is dead set on reclaiming the throne, and I think in order for them to do that (aside from being the most powerful) is to create hard hitting IPs, play the long game, bite the bullet and take the loss on hardware for a bit, which I believe they plan to do.
Remember that selling you consoles isn't the plan. No need to take a loss with that mentality.

Just put it out to break even or slight profit and watch those Xbox Live numbers increase over time.

Do we think this console is using HBM2 memory? The memory bandwidth is a huge jump over current PS4/X1 models.

They are doing a broadcast in a few minutes if anyone is interested:

Hmmm...So they sent of surveys to the major developers and built this thing to be better than their specifications, or at least better than an average of the spec feedback. If this is true then this console will have more than 8GB memory. We saw developers at the start of this complaining that 8GB memory wasn't enough.

Also making the Scorpio an open VR platform makes a lot of sense. No clue how true that is, but it does make a lot of sense.

Here's a dillypickle.

Lets say MS releases Scalebound for Scorpio

Say the XBO version is 1080p/30 and Scorpio is 4k/60

Say If I buy the digital XBO version, will it "upscale" to 4k/60fps or will my play anywhere digital rights also allow me to own the Scorpio version and I just play that instead?

I would think you would just need one disc for both systems. At least that is how I hope it works. I'd say it will work like BC and games do now. Put in the game into your system and it will download to your system. I can't see MS putting out a copy of a game with a One version and Scorpio version on the shelf.

They may change the labeling for their games and they no longer say Xbox One on the plastic at the top but just Xbox or something.

320MB/s doesn't exceed GDDR5 technology. So there would be no point in using HBM2. It would just increase the price unnecessarily.

320MB/s doesn't exceed GDDR5 technology. So there would be no point in using HBM2 unless they really just want us spending $800 for a new console.

It wasn't so much for exceeding GDDR5. I was thinking it was a huge leap and that it is an area where they can shave off some power consumption. HBM2 has significant power consumption advantages.

Price doesn't matter to me. If it's awesome I'll get it.

RAM technologies actually operate on only about 1.5 volts. So the savings in power consumption will be minimal.

For $499-$599 I'd have to see exclusive games on Scorpio. I'm not paying that for Xbox One games in 4K.

Ok, as I stated in an earlier post, games on Scorpio will look better on 1080p tvs too.
Phil confirms in this interview that Scorpio will always render a 4k game in 4k. If you hook Scorpio up to a 1080p tv it will render the game at 4k and downscale the output to 1080p. Kind of SuperAA

That's the good thing, you don't have to, just keep on playing on the X1. As Phil stated, it's not about selling consoles, it's about selling games.

Games like Forza are going to run amazing on it, they'll just also be made to run on older hardware. It won't be an exclusive but work just the same. What they aren't doing is turning their backs on those of us who spend $500 at launch.

Some pertinent info CNET links to on most of their 4K discussions. They put far more importance on HDR than 4K in general.

http://referencehometheater.com/2013/commentary/4k-calculator/

In 2016 as high dynamic range and wide color gamut material appears on UltraHD Blu-ray, high-end 4K sets will start to have a bigger benefit. This is not because those TVs have more pixels, but because those pixels can go brighter and display more colors than the pixels on a 1080p display. If you gave these features to a 1080p display like the LG OLED (which you can on the $3,000 UltraHD LG 55EF9500
ir
) then you'd see even more benefit. Better quality pixels will make a more visible difference than just having more pixels will.

So that's why they went the full Trump "We're going to have the best pixels, the most uncompressed pixels, and it'll be yuge."

You have admit, it's a tricky sell. They don't want to burn bridges with launch customers. But they also have to provide good reason to upgrade.

I think they've managed to do both as best as possible. I'm a launch day 1 owner and I'm not cheesed off in any way. I'll be there day 1 for Scorpio but that's because I want one, not because I'm forced to upgrade.

My only concern is down the line games get "gimped" for "old" hardware. I mean, what if Forza Motorsport starts running with lower framerates and doesn't hold 60 on X1? Hopefully that doesn't happen but I could see a lot of ticked off people.

For multiplats, my fear is the opposite - will they bother to take full advantage of the new hardware and support the old? Seems to me they can just keep making X1/ps4 versions and maybe sprinkle in a little better fps or something on newer consoles. That's really what will matter between this being a great choice for consumers and being a total mess.

How does the Scorpio get around the ESRAM issue on games going forward IF ESRAM isn't included in the Scorpio build? That forwards and backwards compatibility is always going to have to deal with that?
