PS4 voice commands limited at launch.

XBoxNeo : I took the mention of no video pause feature as probably meaning no video controls at all.. I can't imagine why pause of all things would be missing, lol. Use pause all the time since we watch a lot of stuff on our 360 and then one of us gets up to grab a drink or something.

Mcmasters : My fiance uses the Kinect voice controls more than me, and she's pretty much the only one whose gotten extensive motion gaming in on it... I've had fun with motion gaming but I'm not usually in the mood for it.

I was being obtuse. My sincere apologies. I use voice controls generally because my controller has shut off and I don't feel like waiting for my controller to boot up again. The new X1 controllers apparently boot up instantly so I guess I will see if I continue to use voice controls.

Everything I've read and seen regarding the PS4 camea and voice functionality is that it's very much like 360 and Kinect 1.0's, but even more limited than that (at launch).

I wouldn't count on Sony being competitive in this space. Microsoft has built their console from the ground up to use voice navigation for deep linking into experiences, hot swapping with ease, etc. There's little doubt in my mind that Sony's attempts here are a very weak "check box" for them so they can attempt to show feature parity, when really they're very far behind in this space (as is everyone, in terms of 'always on/always listening' voice activation and commands).

Don't count on Sony catching up here. If it's as big a differentiator as Microsoft hopes, Sony will try to do more with it, but they'll be way behind and since it's not included in every box, it'll never reach meaningful saturation.

I don't want sony to copy ms feature for feature, i want the consoles to have their individuality. personally iccl about voice commands (goes for all devices). i'll never use them. if voice navigation is a make or break deal for you, dont get the ps4 or wait. though this is something that is addressable via software, i only see sony bothering with it in future if there is market demand for it.

So to issue commands, are we required to use a device in order for the PSeye to hear it, or will it work like the Kinect--without one?

You don't even need to use a PS Eye to use them, theres no reason the inbuilt head sets cannot be used.

By the way I described PS4 missing a video pause voice feature as "not a show stopper" and none of you miscreants liked my post.

:(

you're not funny so go fork yourself and if you do don't forget to turn on the web cam so I can watch.

not only that but they going to take out more resource with their system because its going to run in 1 OS unlike MS that have 3.

They're behind but they've said they'll keep working on it.

They've designed a system with voice as an after thought. X1 is the opposite.

This whole generation, they'll never get close to what MS is offering on this front. They can't. X1 is MS's second generation of always on voice activation and recognition. The hardware on the console was built with custom sound processing (and the audio processor is massive/extremely powerful as far as audio processors go). The OS was built from the ground up to incorporate voice commands, expand upon them, and make them deep link into any experience. The core system voice commands are as easy to impliment in games as a button press, because that's how games see it - it's an input even like any other. Microsoft is breaking barriers on the voice recognition front that no one else is, and patenting the tech all along the way.

There's no chance Sony will offer anything remotely competitive to what Microsoft has.... not this gen. Maybe next, if voice becomes as intrical and as important as Microsoft bets it will... but Sony can't compete on this level this generation. They can try their hardest to keep up, but they'll fail to reach parity.

Meph.... I'm not worried about. If I feel like I start using my Xbone One a lot more over my PS4 as a result of the voice features then I'll say that Sony dropped the ball.
If they really wanted to impress they should have included a high powered laser along with the voice and facial recognition.
"Xbox... shoot my wife".

Its a binary topic. People either do or they don't. Its why i find it a silly topic. PS4 isn't worse for not focusing on it. And X1 isn't worse for focusing on it. Both focused on different things, which i think is great.

I tend to be like you. I'll use the controller for most things the PS4 voice commands would even cover. If a game used it in a way i like, i would try it.
Taddaaaah!

This guy has a brain.

Tell that to Xbots. OMG we can yell at a piece of plastic while gaming at basic b1tch resolutions. Cool story bro

Sony can and will improve their software.

It's also not out of the question that they could release an upgraded PS Camera, although unlikely. It's just a peripheral after all. Just saying it's not right to say 'never', they do have options.
