The game just screams atmosphere and the soundtrack is hall of fame if it stays true. 1960s New Orleans with Janis Joplin, CCR, and the blues adding to the vibe. I'm super impressed.

I just noticed this game. I've playing a lot of fun, pleasant, rather lighthearted games lately, and I thought maybe I could do with something a little darker. Then I heard this game was going to be set in New Orleans (ish) in the late 1960's. That sounded good. Then I noticed it's coming out October 7th, in about 2 months, yet I didn't see much talk/buzz around it (maybe I just haven't been paying attention).

Figured it was worth a thread bump.

Here's a brief recap I found:
(excerpts)

Set during 1968 in the city of New Bordeaux we'll be covering events spanning 9 months instead of years like in the previous Mafia games. We'll also be playing as Lincoln Clay, an orphaned and mixed race war veteran of Vietnam who came back and was betrayed.

Interestingly the whole story of Mafia III is actually interspersed with a documentary that's being told, and touches on all the major events that happen through Lincoln's war against the mob.

Mafia III introduces something of 'business management' to the mix but what it really means is you'll be dividing up territory you've poached to your new family.

There's no strict way to tackle most things in Mafia III as Hangar 13 made sure most scenarios can be approached how you prefer.

Developer Hanger 13 hasn't shied away from a particular issue when it comes to this 1968 re-imagined New Orleans. Racism was rampant during this time in American history and the team felt it would be a disservice to pretend it wasn't.

We'll get to see the cleaner and more affluent areas but also the most deprived quarters and even explore the crime and predator infested bayou.

This game is really looking awesome, I hope the gameplay is as good as the presentation.

I thought you said you wanted a darker game?

Racism is ALWAYS funny!

Here's a developer-guided walkthrough of some gameplay (preceded by intro to characters). Seems like GTA, though on a smaller scale. I like the characters, time period, and low-life atmosphere. I love the city. I'm not sold on the gameplay (shooting/combat) yet, because it reminds me of a lot of other games I've already played. I also have heard negative things about Mafia 2, so I'm wary of being suckered in by a smooth-looking surface (cutscenes and locales).

Anyhow, I found this sample of gameplay interesting (gameplay starts at 3:10).

We're you into GTA V?

The things I hated about GTA is how aimless it can seem. I enjoy direction, and story, and I think these games actually offer the story first, and chaos second.

No, I didn't play GTA V. Never picked it up. Rockstar tends to use way too much filler for my taste, even in their main storylines. I was also put off GTA 5 by all of the characters being assh0les. That gets old.

I'm glad to hear Mafia is more focused. This is the first open-world Mafia game, though, so we'll see how it goes.

It's going to be badass. One of those games that's almost easy to forget about with everything else going on then it just hits you.

Won't be getting this right away due to gears, forza, recore and Lost Odyssey

Really enjoying it so far, the gameplay feels nice and tight and the story telling so far is really well done. I kind of don't want to get too deep into it now that it's going to get PS4 Pro upgrades next month but I may end up having to just play through it twice lol.

be gone all the doom merchants......so far a couple of hours in....if the writing and story keep up then this sets new standards in narrative video games....on XB1 and not one issue so far.

its a AAA buy,buy,buy.........

Thanks for the update. I was thinking of thinking of buying right after work but I wanted more feedback. I will likely pickup tomorrow.

It's full of jank. Could have been delayed for another year to polish it up. It's fun. I don't care about story in video games so what the f*ck ever about that. Bone version appears to be 720p. Yikes.

Bloody loving it so far. Writing and story so far is brilliant and Clay is an awesome protaganist. Great setting and world and it is full of live and ambience. The driving is damn good and the combat is fun and enjoyable. Stealth is functional and effective. I have had a few bugs and it has crashed on me once but after 4 hours or so I cannot wait to play more. Oh, and the soundtrack is stellar.

I've put a bit more time into it and I'm still liking it a lot, very solid gameplay and the story is awesome so far. I agree with MW that graphically it could use more polish, the models look fine but there are issues with pop in when driving (not last gen bad but could be better) and also just some strange little things that pop up here and there like a brick wall flashing for a quick second. My biggest issue with the graphics is the skybox, well to be more specific the clouds during sunset when it's raining (not sure if it happens otherwise) but they get these lines in them and the whole thing just gets this strange fade in effect instead of the clouds moving and having subtle changes for weather. It stands out a lot to me but it doesn't ruin the look of the game, it's just something I wish they did differently.

So I am about 7 or 8 hours into the game. Met Vito and the Irish guy who I cannot remember his name. Starting to get some more perks now. Calling for a vehicle is handy and getting your cash collected is good. Writing and story is still really good, so much you want more. I don't think find the gameplay too repetitive but too others it will do. I am still getting a thrill stealth killing enemies and being in shoot outs. The world is really the star of the show, so much detail and some great interiors. Each district is unique and a good enough size to feel diverse. The main missions where you have to kill the main side bosses have been great so far but some of the side content will grind on some people. It reminds me of AC: Sydnicate a lot in how you have to take over territories and do side missions to weaken each occupier.

Hey guys, I rented this game at redbox and then bought it because I liked it so much. I can only echo what others have said in that there are certainly some technical issues and repetitiveness, however I haven't minded either too much as the good far outweighs the bad. The graphics are just good enough, but the story and gameplay are top notch. That's a big deal for me because I am not one for video game stories. I mean I didn't enjoy Mafia 2 because it was too story oriented and I think the GTA stories are just beyond stupid.

In this game though they do a fantastic job of setting up the characters, the cutscenes are really well done and acted, and you really understand the character motivations which makes the gameplay more satisfying. And as for gameplay, I love the feel of both the stealth and the shootouts, in large part because of the great character animations. Lincoln is animated super well, and enemies have realistic reactions to being shot. The guns are all punchy and satisfying as well. Good stuff, and the soundtrack is absolutely fantastic.

Anyway, highly recommended if you can look past the issues. Certainly not a perfect game, but hits the right notes for me.

Good impressions overall. Sounds like it's my kind of game. Enjoyed Mafia 2 so i'll be getting this at some point. Looks like the PS4 Pro version is going to be really impressive as well.

I probably won't even pick this up when it drops in price after seeing all of the videos of glitches and technical issues showing up online. I was really looking forward to this.
