It is definitely over $60 for the whole series. They have stated so in many different ways, saying this game is too big for a single release.

If so, that's a legitimate gripe, unless they are substantially expanding the game itself (e.g., adding enough new plot that it doubles the length or something like that). I look forward to hearing the details re. pricing and number of installments.

What gets me is that when they announced the sequel, gamers rejoiced: "Thank the gods, after all of these years, they have answered our prayers. Life is wonderful." A few months later, they mention it will be released in segments, and it's "You have ruined everything. Damn you all to hell." lol. Gamers can get so negative and whiney about any small deviation from expectations. I guess it's more pronounced with a "classic" game such as this. People can get rigid about tradition. I was never a fan of the game myself, so I don't really give a squat.

With reason, people thought this was a $60 retelling of the 3rd greatest story every told (behind Halo 4 and the Bible)....now we know Sony "won" E3 based on a digital title and a stalled kickstarter.

I don't know about you, but when we dreamed the dream of Shenmue III and FFVII:R, it certainly wasn't on a budget.

I didn't dream about either of them, personally. I also hadn't heard it was a digital-only release. I'd find that hard to believe.

I've only ever played a demo of a Mafia game before and thought it was ok but didn't like it enough to buy it, I'm really interested in this one though.

The game is looking better than I expected. It's pre-alpha footage, so they have plenty of time to work out the sometimes jerky animations.

Never played any Mafia games. This one looks interesting but I'll probably pass.

So i heard each part might be $60. What the hell? Longest game ever confirmed or worst attempt at a cash grab ever?

Maybe they're changing it into a trilogy. It's not clear how much re-writing or re-visioning is going on.

Just ranting, but Square-Enix has been so off-base with what fans want. FFXV is already looking to be an an example. Just with the FFXV demo alone, we ask for the ability to coordinate our allies. They hear us out and add in that random mindless QTE "Cross Chain" attack with their 2.0 demo, which is the farthest thing from coordinating allies.

Or when Square-Enix finds out from surveys that the western audience thought the demo was too easy. Instead of realizing that we thought it was too easy and revel in a challenge, they thought we enjoyed grinding for hours until it was easy.

Or Tabata's comments on what kind of game he wants for us.
"Another example is in the combat," explains Tabata. "With the hardware specifications of the newer consoles, it's possible to set it up so you have different enemies and different choices of attacks you can enter in, but I want to simplify that. It'll basically be a one-button action, and the AI intuitively outputs an action that kind of satisfies, gives you that instant gratification, and it connects with the simple touch of a button. I myself am not getting any younger. I don't want to be frantically pushing buttons. I also want to utilise the intelligence of the hardware spec, and not have to go through too much hassle or trouble in order to execute moves."

It's just a lot of little things that make your jaw drop and realize the company is just a bunch of bureaucrats who don't know the first thing about games. They are up there on my list next to Nintendo on some of these moves of theirs. It's stressful to be a fan of their FF games.

That seems like an accurate take on things. The magic of the original was bound up with the time it was made, including all the limitations. You can't just make an HD version of that; it's not that simple. They have to create a brand new game, from just about scratch.

"Few seem to realise that it will share nothing with FFVII other than the characters and parts of the script (which will be "expanded"). .... Which is a roundabout way of saying that FFVII Remake cannot be seen as a remake in any sense, but only as a whole new game. To believe otherwise is to misunderstand the nature and scale of the undertaking, and the active nature of development."

I do understand the complaints about one-button action, though. That seems a bit lame.

That seems like a better argument for why the game shouldn't be made at all.

Well you're assuming that the remake will be better which overall, it might not be. I the article does a good job of explaining expectations when it comes to remakes.

FF7 was the first proper RPG I ever played and it was the first time I ever invested serious time into a video game. It holds a special place in my heart. But let's face facts. It's twenty years old. The same game can't and shouldn't be made again.

You're right on the money, Andy. And I think that's what people instantly assumed it would be - a HD remake of something that really can't be reproduced.

But you also have to ask the question of can they be trusted to still make great traditional Final Fantasy games at this point?

I call this the "Harry Potter affect". Movies (and I guess now games) split up one installment into multiple for an easy cash grab.

Of course they can't. It's a different company now with different people. That's more or less what Ars were saying in that article as well. It's their game and they'll do their best but their best has to be taken in the context of what games are like now, and not 20 years ago. Also the expeditions of fans have to be realistic and let's face it, we're a fanatical and moany bunch at the best of times :-)

I get where that article is coming from... But its a load of bull s***.

I'm going to remake Casablanca, starring Miley Cyrus and Justin Beiber, and its a musical set in high school.

f*** off.

i'd say the driving and all the car stuff looks to be the weakest element of the sort of core tenants of this game. the cars blowing up looked lame and driving itself looks really floaty....

I'm just going to leave this here because it's that good. Greatest E3 moment of all time imho. They can't mess this up.

Final Fantasy VII is being remade due to the great demand from the fans. So the fans have some right to demand what kind of game we get.

Nah, we have no right to ask for what we want. Even though we've been asking for a remake forever now. Why would we want it done our way? Just take the money Square Enix.

I remember SE saying they make what they want during all the outrage of FFXIII and whatever. That's fine, but we want an FFVII remake that holds true to the formula that made the first game amazing.
