I still haven't finished it, but I'm finally getting through it on PC. It is a great game and a terrible game.
RDR2 is a game that forces you to enjoy it the way it was intended, and that's both great and terrible.
RDR2 is a great story that forces you to take a slow path through it. The environments are amazing and I can 100% see what people wanted this to be. It forces moral choices on you whether you want them or not. It is probably one of the most engrossing video game stories out there.
In movie terms, GTA is a superhero movie, while this is some oscar winning movie with Francis McDormand in it.
If you want GTA on horses, this isn't it. You've got to clean your gun, feed and brush your horse, rest yourself and eat. Again, it has a pace and you will follow it, there's no other option. This is a very long game and there's no shortcuts.
I appreciate it for what it is. I get why some people love it and others don't. A perfect example of this game is you'll be riding along and you'll see armed bad guys attacking innocent people. You go and shoot them and save the people, and suddenly you'll see the message "crime witnessed". Someone saw you shoot people, and that's bad (even though you killed bad people). Now you have to deal with an innocent witness who is going to report your "crime" to the authorities. Every little side mission is a moral test, and more often than not, it feels random and weird. Half the time, you see multiple people in a dispute, and there's no easy answer,
Now, you can just play the bad guy and that's fun, but the game punishes you for that too. You'll constantly be paying off bounties on yourself, so your ill gotten gains get eaten up to the point where you're better off sticking to the main missions.
It is a massive open world, but often really boxes you in for how you can play it sometimes.
The action is also fun, but frustrating. You're a gunslinger, but combat is fairly realistic. You'll use cover and have to be careful. I found it especially challenging on controller for some reason. On mouse it feels better.
If you made it this far, you'll see there's no easy answer. The game is beautiful and has some amazing moments that are on par with actual movies. This is one of the few games where I actually care about the characters and what happens to them. If you asked me to score it, I couldn't. I love it for what it is, but it frustrates me when it holds me to its narrow vision.
