God of War has a 40 hour campaign, RDR2's campaign is great and lengthy as well but it's inflated by the traversal time. Both are amazing games and both would have been deserving winners regardless of who won.
If you play RDR2 by running from mission to mission, then I can see why it wouldn't work for people. The game relies on sucking in the world and experience. The exploration and even the sight-seing. Travelling IS part of the game play. It's actually pretty niche in a lot of ways.

I remember we had that one guy who saw RDR2 for what it was at launch. Where is that guy? We should throw flowers at his feet right now.

I do enjoy RDR2, but its more entertainment package /time sink than a game, like Vikings series I am watching. GOW is a better game, & you get more enjoyable/unit time. Which there are some backtracking, long boating, it was never as bad as RDR2.

In RDR2, you ride for 30 mins/ 3mins of fun gameplay or something. Traversing is like 90% of the playtime.

The graphics of RDR2 carried the game more than people perhaps realise (IMO).

That's part of the Cowboy lifestyle though.

I'm sure his arm is just sore from patting himself on the back for being wrong all the time....

Was that the same guy who was s***ting on God of War before its release?

Because that guy looks silly

Poor Red Dead has to settle for second best game of the year. What a disaster!

Rage 2's release date trailer was a highlight for me. New Ultimate Alliance announcement was unexpected, especially being a switch exclusive. The Outer Worlds has beaked my interest even if I'm not a big Fallout-like fan.

Dragon Age 4. A few years ago I would have been fan boying out. But given how Bioware has handled the last 2 Dragon Ages and the last Mass Effect, I might not even buy the next Dragon Age until its on sale or a GOTY bundle is available.

Rage is a bit too intense of a shooter for me. Those "high-intensity" shooters just make me tense and then, after a while, tired of the shootey shootey. Happens with even great shooters.

I agree about DA4. I'm disappointed they're continuing with Solas' story, which I didn't care about in DA:I. I had hoped they would start fresh, but I guess DA:I's ending obligated them to continue that plotline. I'm also not impressed with Bioware's games over the past few years. In addition, I recently saw the narrative director for DA4 talking about how big he is on intersectional feminism, i.e., identity politics, so I am even less interested than I would be otherwise. They're going to have to sell me on it.

I wish I had jumped on the Black Friday sale for Tomb Raider. If its marked down again I'll be all over it. It was nice to see Forza Horizon 4 take best in class for driving games. That's another title I'm circling, too many games not enough time.

A little confused how Monster Hunter: World took best RPG. Its an awesome game that gave me dozens of hours of enjoyment but I don't really think of it as a RPG. Hmmmm, maybe the RPG category is getting too broad and needs to be a bit more specific.

I do wonder what kind of pacing Rage 2 will have. It's by the guys who made Mad Max, and they definitely weren't scared to slow down a bit. Plus Rage will have the benefit of their car combat DNA, which was awesome in MM.

I am excited for DA4 but I share your concerns with the narrative directors tweets. These games seemed to be about player choice before, and it should remain that way. They need to worry more about making the gameplay more fun and making it actually feel like an open world game instead of just hubs.

DA:I was great, tied with origins imo.
As long as same crew making this, I'm onboard.

If they were to change it up a bit and allow you to ride/control a dragon and make the gameplay a bit more open and fun do you think the Dragon Age fanbase would be upset? I know many weren't happy with the changes that were made originally to make it more console friendly. It just seems like that stiff small scale gameplay needs to change a bit. I love playing as a mage but having to stand back and just play out the same couple of attack animations over and over gets annoying, you should feel like you are powerful when you are shooting lightning or fire at someone but the mages just seem weak. I'd like to see them actually hit people with the staff when they are close and maybe change the animations for the base attacks depending on what element you are using etc.

Fans always gets upset lol
I don't mind change, if it's good gameplay wise I say go for it. Graphically it looked great, but yes, animations looked meh, they should def work on that.

This was encouraging to read:

RAGE 2 Will Have “A High Distraction Factor”, Says id Software
The open world of RAGE 2 will be a a playground for exploration-lovers.

"According to Willits, the open world of RAGE 2 is designed in a way to continuously distract the player with dynamically occurring events, or interesting things to see in the world itself, so that players can spend hours on end simply exploring the world, or just driving or flying about. Willits mentions the aerial vehicle Icarus specifically, which he says is something that isn’t given to players, rather something that has to be earned, but once it’s acquired, opens up the entire game “in a new, exciting way”.

“I like to say that RAGE 2 has a high ‘distraction factor’ when playing,” Willits said. “I often get sidetracked by something as I drive past, or something happens dynamically in the world. I find that I can spend hours just driving around or flying. I really enjoy the Icarus mini-copter the best. It’s an amazing way to see all the sights. One of the cool things about the Icarus is that it’s a reward for people who explore. It isn’t found on the ‘golden path’ of the game. It’s not just given to you, you need to earn it. But once you have the Icarus, the whole game opens up to you in a new, exciting way.”

Best announcements for Crash Team racing remake, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 as I thought the franchise was dead and Outer Worlds. Announcing Dragon Age is a weird one - I would rather Mass Effect reboot - but i cannot trust EA to do right with Bioware.

I really hope they have incentives to explore the nooks and crannies. There is nothing more disappointing than seeing some interesting structure or distinct tree in the distance only for it to be nothing more than window dressing. The whole industry should learn from BotW in that regard.

And the best reveal of all...

Publishers will take note of this. Next year's Game Awards will have bigger, better reveals. Keighly based God.

I am most excited by the outer worlds and rage 2. I haven’t play a shooter since doom 2016. No, rdr2 is not a shooter.

Yeah... by that logic Blazing Saddles is a better movie than godfather part 2...

Here's what you're missing.

There are influences impacting the success of a film that have no relation to it's quality. Namely stars cast (sorry Tom Cruise fans) and marketing budget. A bad film can make lots of money as long as it has a big enough star and enough marketing dollars are spent.

The multiplayer genre is more akin to the jungle. You can't fake it in this arena. We're witnessing Fortnite flex on massive games like Red Dead Redemption 2, Call of Duty 4, and Battlefield V. It's been out more than a year, it's competition just arrived with all the glitz and fanfare they could muster and they're just getting bodied. This is unprecedented.

You can fake day one, or week one sales. You can't fake gamer interest a year after launch. Longevity is the sign of a true champion.

In terms of RDR2 and GoW? GoW is assuredly the better game. Gamers rated it significantly higher (9.1 vs 7.8 ) and a much higher percentage of it's players were actually compelled to finish it (50% vs 20%). That actually counts for something.

But giving GotY to the current flyweight champion over the greatest heavyweight champ in the history of the medium? Nah...

By that logic, Candy crush should be the pinnacle of gaming, since its been out forever & still super popular....

Yes, now you're getting it.

Candy Crush is definitely the best casual game of all time. They figured out a formula for casual phone players that works like any other.

Fortnite is a gamers game though. And thus, the greatest core video game of all time.

GoW and RDR2 are cute but they aren't real candidates.

Wow.

Fortite is the game of the moment just like Overwatch was, and COD before that. It's the cool game to play. Something else will come, and it will be forgotten too. At least COD is still relevant. I don't ever hear about overwatch anymore.
