The Golf Club

I will indeed be getting this for the all mighty Xbox One powerhouse. Never a question. I heart golf.

No player customisation or progression is pretty disappointing. Have they said if they are adding it in future?

I think the lack of progression (i.e., upgrades) is part of the design philosophy. They want everyone on a level playing field. So I doubt they'll add upgrades. They might add some player customizations that don't affect performance, though. New pants.

I can see where they're coming from, but at the same time it's cool creating a golfer and developing him with your own play style rather than everyone capable of exactly the same thing. On the fence with this one, I'll just wait for reviews I guess.

I am so happy about the fact everyone is on the same playing field. Now when you play friends its who is the best not how built up your character is. Makes me think of Links on the OG XBOX.

It's really just a cop out for lack of depth. Yes, it is great at times to play others on equal footing and the EA series has always allowed just that with tournaments set where everyone uses the same golf pro or you can easily do h2h with others the same way.

But golf really shines when you have strengths and weaknesses, risk and reward, and the ability to create a golfer that plays how you desire. Different courses play to different golfers strengths whether it be a long course favoring long hitters, a tight fairway course playing to control golfers, etc. In the same way a racing game would be dull if everyone had the same car (while still fun to run stock car races), variety on styles, strengths, weaknesses, choices of the clubs your carry along with the brands are things that even an arcade title like Power Star Golf realizes is as important to creating depth as a full featured title does.

I do understand the direction The Golf Club is aiming at by designing the variety via the courses we are expected to create but that may only go so far in covering up the lack of other features players desire.

Links is still the best golf game I have played to date.

Well I for one don't want a game to be decided on because my opponent can out-drive me by 50yrds in a video game. Now on a real course that is different. If we go back to games like Links on the PC and then the OG XBOX there were no need for building up a character and the games were very addictive. I found that golf games got too arcade'y with building up characters. I am looking for a true golf sim now. I think what will give this game depth is the course creator and being able to download and use user created courses. It may take some time to get some good ones but they will come if the community is big enough, plus in one article I read the dev said they are hoping to be able to share courses across LIVE, PSN, and PC. We will see how that turns out as I believe Trials is doing something similar.

Odd how you state you want a sim but don't want differentiation of strengths and weaknesses among golfers. I guess we all have our own definition of what makes up a "sim". As I mentioned, the EA games has always provided the option of playing stock or with unique style characters. They have made it so if you are playing against the guy that bombs it 50 yards further that his overall accuracy will suffer. For any strength you choose you have corresponding weaknesses because you can't max out every ability area. The key word in all that is "option" - a game that provides an option to play stock or with attributes trumps one that only allows stock play. The Golf Club is greatly narrowing their market by catering to only those that want to play "their" way and ultimately the golf market isn't large enough to only support limited options.

Well to each their own, I always found Tiger games too arcadey and lacked realism. Had allot more fun playing against friends with games like links

Leveling systems are awful in video games. It comes down to who has more spare time. There's nothing worse in a golf game than not being able to hit the ball past 150 yards until you "level up".

Sounds like neither Kerosene31 or Haggis had any experience with TW14 or they wouldn't be making those statements. TW14 offered a new Simulation difficulty level that rivals anything I've played on Links or any other golf game previous. And there was no grind to level up a golfer if you didn't want to do so. Nor would Haggis put much faith in the simulation value of The Golf Club since they have it dumbed down by making it nearly impossible to miss a fairway off the teebox and sifting through all the ridiculous arcade-style created courses is a job unto itself.

Not to say I don't have hopes of enjoyment from The Golf Club because it does have potential. They just made a partnership with Greg Norman and his course design team so I am hopefully there will be a wider variety of tools added to make more unique realistic courses short of the 4 themes they now offer. As it stands now, there is no way to make a decent reproduction of a real life course given the course creator tools in the game thus far. But you sure can make some wonky designs and that seems to be what most users are doing.

Even in the older TW games when I played them online and would host I would up the difficulty to the hardest and turn off power boost and spin. Most people would quit mid match because they could not handle it and those that played me till the end I would smoke them. I liked playing it more realistic and making the game harder.

You are right I didn't play TW14, didn't realize they had that mode. Good to know. As for The Golf Club do you have first hand knowledge of it being dumbed down?

Yes, I do. I bought the early access the day it became available in early June and have put in a hundred or so rounds through about 5 different builds they have offered.

hmm well that's disappointing. Was really hoping for a Links successor out of this one.

I've played every TW game since 09. There was nothing real about '14

Nothing real? Real courses...about 40 of them all licensed. Real licensed tournaments including all 4 majors. Real golfers. Real equipment. (None of these real things are in The Golf Club). And a real challenge on simulation mode in TW14. Would love to play you a round on sim mode in TW14 and see you shoot better than 10 under. Standard fare in The Golf Club to do so since you can't miss a fairway like reality and the TW14 has challenge like that by the boatload. I have no clue what you are describing by saying nothing was real about TW14.

I always play on the hardest mode. The best TW game was I think TW11 with true aim or view (where you didn't get an aiming point in the top down view and had to aim from the golfer's perspective). I didn't like their swing mechanic. Sure it made it hard, but too hard. People online "cheat" with custom controllers that give them an advantage. The physics have been pretty bad for some time now. The putting is also weird.

There's a reason they are taking a year off to completely revamp the game. EA doesn't do that with sports games unless the reviews and sales start plummeting.

You make me want Tiger 14!!

$35 is decent for this, especially considering the course creator and all the courses that will be available over time.

720p XBox One 30-45fps
1080p PS4 30-40 fps

Supposedly the input (swing) framerate is 60fps for both.

Little disappointing the Xbox version couldn't even get to an acceptable 900p. The only thing going for Xbox is the PS4 version has been delayed and won't be releasing Aug 19th. Could be a couple day delay, week or 2, or who knows at this point.
